Hey everyone. I recently upgraded to a 4-site UnderCurrent hydroponic system and it holds nearly double the water my old single site system held. I'm having to push my next grow off until I can rebuild my tiny little "closet" space. No totes I can find will fit in the 34" of shelf space I gave myself so I'm looking to move towards a rebuild with a trash can res.

Anybody out there filled one of the 44 gallon Brute trashcans completely full of water? My current 30 gallon tote nearly busts at 25+. It flexes enough to make me uncomfortable so I have ratchet straps holding back the bulge.

I'd really like to use an actual water tank but they're expensive and might make mixing nutes a chore. Trash cans should work fine, right?

I have filled and used 44, 32, 20 and 10 gallon Brutes.
All in my fish room.
I stored 4 Brutes of prepped water at all times.
They work great and hold up like you want.
Have no fear.

The best thing about Brutes is they sell a wheeled platform for them so if you need to move it around you can.
I've used them in the past and would today but I have a livestock barrel for outside storage and indoors is a 55 gallon old soap barrel I use just for more capacity but Brutes are very solid choices.
Avoid the collapsible tanks made for hydro or rain collection. They suck and don't hold up well

What about plastic barrel? The ones you see used as trashcans at little kids baseball parks?....those suckers are thicccc

Yeah. 50 gallon drums would work if I could find a CLEAN one. Most have already been used for some sort of chemical and I'm not interested in cleaning it up. Lids aren't usually standard, either.

So just a tip to keep in mind. Anything higher than grow grow sites will be wasted space. If you fill a garbage can or 50gal drum higher then the water level of the sites they will overflow.

HDX totes work pretty well imo. Like what @moe.red has. Unless you mean just to use to mix nutrients

I have a 4 site system with another "control res" outside the tent that is fed from an upper "top-off" resevoir. The top-off serves as my mixing tote and also feeds the lower resevoirs via float valve in the control res. Never had any overflow issues. I should've specified that I'm needing a larger TOP-OFF res, not larger sites below.

This new setup nearly doubled the volume in the lower resevoirs so I'm having to find a bigger top-off. Problem is, I built a small room for all this. After my 5x5 was added, I have just enough room for my current top-off res. No room to go larger if I use another tote. I only have 32 inches of space. Those 44 gallon Brutes are 23 or so inches. 28 high.

My plan is to dismantle my "desk" outside the tent and rebuild it to fit a trashcan while keeping it just high enough to work for my top-off res. I don't want to redo any of my plumbing and shouldn't have to. I'll have to adjust the pipe from the top-off to the lowers but I have a slip fitting on that already. Should be an easy adjustment.

The trash can will save me some room while boosting my volume by nearly 20 gallons. I checked out every brand of tote I could find. Nothing bigger than a 30 gallon fits in the limited space I left myself. I basically built a 5x8 closet, framed and sheetrocked. These Brutes are about my only option. Thankfully, they appear to be more than durable enough.
