Old School Skunk, RKS

Just an update on these ladies. The four in their own bed are the ‘79 Florida Skunk from Katsu. All the rest are various skunks from the skunk works breeder. I had a bout of little white mites. Broad mites maybe. I’ve been hitting them hard with sulfur, that’s what all the white stuff on them is. I had a bunch of Northern Lights but the bugs loved them and the plants had like no defense for them so I tossed all of the NL plants, bummed about that. So it’s all skunks this year. I think the mites are gone or almost at this point. I hate bugs.

Those ‘79s are slow growers. Small compact indicas. Looking forward to those. I’ve been considering maybe trying to split the bed up and plant them in the green house with the other skunks. We’ll see.

Just an update. Of the three 79’ Florida skunk plants, one has a skunky smell and two have a sweet smell. The nose is not loud at all but they are not done. Supposedly the thiols don’t activate until like week nine or ten I think. It’s getting cold so I hope they make it that long. So far I’m disappointed but we’ll see. Maybe they’ll start spraying skunk smell soon.

I can remember growing Afghani in the early 80's. The Skunk smell on those started when the plants were 4 inches tall and 3 weeks old- way before they ever started flower. Pretty wild, I think its mostly bred out now. I still wonder if it was a DEA gene splicing trick to bust people.

Can we get the DEA to re-create it?

I kinda wondered if actual skunks sprayed a the crop haha. A growers secret….🤫

I'll add I've found some kushes that smelled similar or worse than RKS............not as much lately as I now look for things less odoriferous.

If any of those places actually had the old school, real deal skunk they would be millionaires and you would be hearing about it online everywhere. Lots of people claim to have RKS but most have a disclaimer that says it could be fruity haha. I haven’t smelt it since the late 80’s early 90’s.

Probably not the case actually, the people that have it most likely arent even on the internet.
RKS is still out there, but its locked down because people suck balls and then it'll be bred into everything and thats not what the RKS crowd is about

I personally think it’s gone. Or if it is around it probably is some old school hippie that won’t part with the genetics. But you can’t hide real skunk! It’s impossible! A gram in your pocket and the whole grocery store could smell it haha. So I find it hard to believe someone could keep it secret this long!

Theyre more like rotting/death than skunk spray. I found them absolutely gross, but they for sure grew well. The high was decent, nothing too crazy. But it made my clothes and even breath smell really bad after smoking a joint.

Just an update on these 79’ Florida Skunk ladies. It’s now day 70. We are getting freezing nights then it’ll be in the forties the next night. So far they are handling it good. They need to go at least another ten days to activate the thiols according to Katsu seeds. If the weather cooperates we should make it. If we get consistent freezing nights I’ll have to chop. I have been battling spider mites and had to hose some off the other night. I leaf lowered the water off but missed some and had to chop a couple tops because it was starting to mold. But all seems to be fine now. So, the smell….

It has an interesting nose. It’s different than a skunk smell. It has a funk dankness that is in the skunk family for sure but it’s not like the smell of a skunk. More sulferish maybe? It’s a hard smell to describe. It’s like a Sulfer with something pleasant behind it. Not quite perfume but something that balances out the Sulfer smell. I am exited for thiols and then maybe it’ll be closer to skunk. I will update in another ten days if they can make it than long. Stay tuned…
