I am now the proud owner of a two drawer worm composting bin. I begin to compost almost as soon as it arrives.

How do I go about producing top shelf castings? Is there a 'trick' or a secret? What do I need to go out of my way to feed these worms to obtain the most microbial castings?

i keep a worm farm, i use a worm factory 360. for bedding i use coco and shredded newspaper (no slick pages). for food they get everything that doesn't mold up, if i see it mold than they probably don't like it so i take it out. my worms favs are cucumber peels and tomatoes. they like mushy things are easy to or are already broken down. nothing to citric, they like it but the acid burns their lips.

a sprinkling of mineral dust once in a while on top of the food is good for their gizzards, i have chickens so i use ground up egg shells for this. pumice is also nice to add in with the bedding but absolutely not necessary.

a nice topping of moist newspaper or cardboard on the very top is good and makes it safe and easier for them to smell the food.

any questions at all man fire away, i've kept this same farm of red wigglers for over ten years now.

.

I came close to building one two years ago. Wife was dead set against it. Same with the composter I made. To many critters outside and she just doesn’t want them inside. Still hope to do the worms down the road. 3 big totes was all I needed to start.

they're super easy to maintain.. the worms, not a wife.. really only takes up less than five minutes a week in time. our scraps either go to the worms or out in the yard for some other critter.

I’ll see if I can talk her into it down the road. We need to clean up, toss, and rearrange things here.
