My big issue, as a granddad, is that it is impossible for me to spoil the grandkids, because their parents have spoiled them already, beyond my wildest dreams. By comparison to my step-daughter and son-in-law, they must think I'm a strict disciplinarian.
My step-daughter set me straight a few years ago, after an incident that was so minor to me that I was shocked at their reactions. While I was visiting, the 8-year old picked up a laser pointer, and pointed it directly at their little Boston Terrier. I reflexively said, "HEY, don't point that at him. You can blind him." Incident over, I thought.
THREE DAYS LATER, I got a text, saying that I "confused" my grandson by "disciplining" him, and they'll handle the discipline in their family, thank you. I also found out that the laser pointer belonged to the 8-year old, and his 4-year old brother also had one. (I was tempted to ask if I could give them a couple of boxes of blue tip matches for Christmas, unless they already have them, but I could see my sense of humor was not going to help matters.)
I'll have them all day soon, while mom and dad escape the hell they've created for themselves for a day. I think I'll have to take them for a hike, away from things like fast food, phones, tablets and other electronic "baby sitters." I'll just keep the "disciplining" to matters of life and death.
