This grow fell into my feed and thought I'd share.
Only time I've ever seen something similar is back in the late 80s a few family members on the outlaw side used beach sand with composted goose and duck shit tea for clones under 4' floro shoplights.
Surprised this is working so well but damn I bet those pots are heavy

I've used perlite -sand-vermiculite mix with good results long long ago. Then I figured out lava rock works better and easier to recycle.

The 50/50 perlite/vermiculite was my first intro into soilless hydro then I got into flood and drain using lava rock as well.
Lava rock was great but man it was so heavy. My tote was 12 gallons and it musta weighed 100lbs. All my supplies came from a local harware store and I bought the GH trio to feed it at a head shop.
After that I made my way into my first hydroshop experience and walked out with a huge sack of hydroton. I felt like I was on my way ready to grow like a pro until I ran the system with the hydroton and didn't realize it floated. Clay balls everywhere as they spilled over the rim!
I learned that wasn't gonna work and the guy at the hydroshop showed me a GH waterfarm which was drip ring top fed and pretty baddass at the time.

LOL, I bought my first grow light at a head shop in Oregon. $150 for a 400w MH. Got a hydrofarm solo in '83 and grew a 1lb monster in hydrotron before it was hydrotron-it was called geolite. Then I bought the quad and a 1000w HPS, and thought I was a growing God haha. We've come a long ways..

Man that's way too funny and similar to my own venture into indoors.
Yep my first light came from a head shop too haha! A 400watt MH with mag ballast and a wonky sort of hood that was a wide U shape and painted white. Also grabbed the 360 watt HPS conversion lamp for flowering. The shop owner was a grower and he built the lights in the back.
I remember seeing a few bags of Fox Farm Ocean Forest and thinking wow that must be some sort of magic soil with that art! They sold all the Fox Farm stuff and GH stuff for hydro along with some grodan rockwool. This was all around '94.
There were a few grow books and that got me into Ed Rosenthal's spiral bound book which I still use techniques I read in it today. Also bought High Times and felt like I hit "playa" status when I got a subscription for a year.

Not too many head shops like that still around anymore. That one sold all the naughty stuff like sex toys and even the Anarchist Cookbook which got them visits from the Secret Service from time to time. Like everything counter culture could be found there.
Also sold stuff for pro dart competition and disc golf I always thought was weird until later I realized disc golf was like the official sport of stoners. But yeah in the back corner was the grow stuff and they even had a little house plant growing under a 250 watt HPS.
The smoke shop part was just metal, wood, or onyx pipes, lots of papers, and acrylic bongs then came Graffix glass bongs and that was the shit.
