A Turkey In The Hay 🦃

You're not going to believe this one 🤦🏻

I was up my neighbors today and he had recently gotten a horse

Told me his emu took one look at the horse and ran off into the woods and hasn't come back for several days

Told me earlier this morning the local animal control officer had paid him a visit

It seems that another neighbor looked out their window and saw what he initially thought was an ostrich running through his back yard and called animal control 😂🤣😅

...unfortunately the emu remains missing 🦤

Dad has a horse hobby farm. Rents out the fields. But they have a few emu and deer farms in his area. Both have very high fences. I know deer and jump very high but I guess emu do too.

He’s told a few stories how the critters have gotten out and had to be brought home. Coyote were a problem at one point too in the early 2000’s.

Well now I've seen everything!

I was passing through the house into the kitchen and I saw this coming out of my garage

I never thought I'd be trying to corral and lasso an emu, but that's just Maine for ya, I guess 🦤🤠

Called my neighbor he came down with a big yellow tow strap, I put some cat food down shook the bag he put the tow strap loop around the bag and we had one shot at it

But emu's are not only fast they're smart too, so Ricky the emu has gone off into the woods again, neighbor says he belongs to the neighborhood now IMG_20250507_122410.jpg

I have no idea how to catch an emu and his owner wasn't sure either, he was afraid that if he did get it lassoed that he'd struggle and break his neck, so maybe it's just as well we didn't catch him

He said that he's been home, stood there for a very long time and just stared at the horse and then ran off again. He is just not going to be around that horse I guess, so good luck to him out here cuz we got coyotes, bears, bobcats and lynx and even though the government denies it people have seen timberwolves too

I was going to ask if it's a good a neighbor and suggest setting a trap, if not. @stonemason, or someone on here, mentioned emu dung being great cannabis fertilizer, lol. Sounds like a good neighbor and a smart emu. Hope the emu gets home safe.

The continuing adventures of Ricky the emu... 🦤

Somehow he traveled a half a mile through the woods down the hill to the neighbors where I get my eggs sometimes and squared off with their beagle! 🤣🤣🤣

The whole road is aware of it now and everybody's having a good time laughing about it!Screenshot_20250507-142702~2.jpg

He’ll be back. Looking for food and safety. Probably. Maybe. 🤔

I don't know. Looks like the emu is having fun. Being smart, I wonder if it recognized that beagle only has so much rope?

I'm rooting for the bird freeing the beagle and gaining a traveling companion.

Update: 5/8

I got some accidental runoff today & and when I checked it it was slightly over a thousand PPM (I forgot to check the pH) a little high for my liking at this point so everybody got a feeding of just plain pH'ed water today

In general everything's healthy, I've got to get those two shorties raised up on something, have to press some hash today too, besides that it's onward through the fog!IMG_20250508_054946~2.jpg

RICKY THE EMU IS HOME AND SAFE!

few minutes ago I ran into the mailman who told me there was an emu at the firelane just up the street

I called the neighbor who's emu it is and met him there and three of us just slowly walked down the street with the emu in the middle of the road

Screenshot_20250508-140701.jpgHappened to be a police car passing by and he blocked the traffic behind us, it was a scene man 🤣😂🤣

Anyway we think he was really hungry after 3 days of running around and wanted to go home cuz he slowly walked in the yard and walked right into his pen

Neighbor said he paid $1,000 for that emu, wow!

You called it! He couldn't wait to get home, although he did spook and run off into the woods a couple times, but we had three people and we kind of just cut him off and steared him back into the middle of the road, when he got in front of his house he started bobbing his head up and down really quickly, really excited, he knew he was home.

We had to walk him a good quarter mile down the middle of the road and it was at his pace too so it took a while, we left our cars all over the road, and we had a police escort behind us, it was something! Just when you think you've seen it all... 🤣😂🤣

Happy it all worked out. Once the horse gets to know he’s at his new home he’ll do that if he gets loose. Although some are just asshats. Bite or kick just because. Dad had one that loved oranges so much he’d start to drool as soon as he could smell it. He’d rub his head against you to persuade you to give it to him. 🤣

So with any luck I just lit my last fire of the year on this cool rainy morning, it will burn till early Sunday morning when we have a warm up coming, and hopefully that'll be it.

This is my fourth year heating with wood, I had always hoped that I'd have a little place somewhere in the country but at least at times never thought it would happen, cuz as some of you may know it can be difficult escaping the city

These are three 18x5' rows of wood in the garage, this plus what I have stacked outside will be what I use to heat for a fifth year, God willing

I will not die in this frigging city! One day we will move to the country as planned. 🙏

That time of the night again, the hashish & cappuccino hour ⏳

Boy these two Kush plants are really stinking it up, and they're barely in bloom

I'm going to have to hang the filter for this run, no doubt

At first light I'm going to have to do a big feeding, trying to remember which one still has to be flushed 🤔

Pretty good herd of deer this spring, I counted 9 or 10 and quite a few little ones the size of vizslas running around too!IMG_20250510_190034~2.jpg

Mr. Stretchy on front right's a little droopy still, both on the right just got watered at 450ppm, down from 600 which was a little more than I needed

Tonight I'll turn the light up to 600 watts for the rest of the run

Speaking of lights, I have a question; I'm not sure if anybody's ever seen this, I haven't, but I've got to figure out how to ask it first because it sounds crazy 🤪

Speaking of crazy, mid 30s last night🥶 still got the fire going from last weekIMG_20250512_072632.jpgIMG_20250512_072617.jpg

So early in the flowering of my first run I noticed my lights hadn't turned on at the proper time, so I replaced the timer

Replacing the timer did not fix the problem and the light failed to strike the next evening

Next in line I assumed the ballast had gone bad, so I bought another 250, 400, 600 watt unit

Replacing the ballast did not fix the problem, some evenings it would turn on at 9:00, other evenings I would have to unplug it from the timer and plug it back in and then it would usually strike; I did not understand why this was happening?

Tldr & the answer to why this was happening:

I finally realized this was only happening in the bloom cycle after installing the HPS, it was the light bulb 💡 👈🏻🤬

HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS?

I bought a two pack of an unknown brand of 600W HPS bulbs, so I switched to the second bulb last night, I won't know until this evening if they're both typical Chinese garbage or if the one in there now strikes, I'll update later

I checked and they're ipower which somehow I know is not a great brand

I used to buy Vivosun but they don't seem to be manufacturing bulbs anymore

Not too many choices in HID bulbs now that everyone's gone led
