Yes, I'd definitely appreciate seeing how you're doing things. I compost, but it isn't a planned thing. It might be a little hot with the chicken manure, but I haven't tried testing it. I used it in my outdoor grow last year. It'll be in the mix again this year, but in the ground instead of grow bags.

I just started some seeds, with plans to pick two to try growing in 2X4 tent. I'm not sure whether to try some living soil I found in a grow supply store, or just grab some Coast of Main or FoxFarms. Maybe simpler is better for getting one under my belt. I think the living soil that shop carried was Gaia Green and a more local brand from North Carolina.

I don't realy know to much about bagged soil.there are a bunch of guys on here that do though. just ask im sure they will have plenty of feed back.i think we used roots organics when we buit my buddies 5 beds, that and some loam (sand silt clay) from the gravel pit.i will throw up my top soil recipe that I used for my beds. it's nothing special mostly just compost,peat,pumice with some amendments and microbes..

It's super cool of you to share your experience. I'm looking forward to learning where you've landed on your topsoil recipe. It was this very thread that led me to Bud Builders when I was searching around for soil amendments, last Spring. It keeps paying dividends .

Yea they are sneaky little suckers.season almost done here.we hunt them non stop for the few weeks they are up.when they are done we start fishing and gardening.

@BlueCollarBob here is that soil recipe I used nothing special, I'm no expert.

I use 1/3 compost 1/3 peat1/3 aeration. I always go a little heavier on the compost.i try to get 3 or 4 different kinds of compost from different places.. I like to throw in some worm castings,leaf mold also on the compost end. For the aeration I like to use sifted pumice or a bonsai rock mix ,rice hulls,wood chips. A mixture of the 3 but mostly pumice. If the wood chips havnt aged outside a year I like to soak them in a imo4 tea packed with nuitrients or a compost tea will work. Don't use cedar. I mix all together on a piece of ply wood or kitty pool and then spread it out to about a 4 to 5 inch height evenly.after it's spread out I dust it all once with about and 1/8 inch layer of dryed yarrow,nettle,hops,aloe powder,yucca powder,comfrey, hoarse tail and bio char(charge the bio char with biology and nutes before hand).i dust it twice with dolomite( can use wood ash instead) alfafa meall l (I just use organic rabitt pellets gound up its way cheaper than the meal).icelandic kelp meal,cotton sead meal,rock dust,neem sead meal,sunflower seed meall(the sun flower you have to make they don't sell it),soy bean meal,fossilized batt guano, grean bean seed meal(also home made) canabiss stems and leaf meal imo #4(store bought microbes will work.) I mix it all up give it a light spray of lactic acid bacteria and a imo #4 tea.let it set a week or 2 in about 70% shade.

For the 30 gallon beds the bottom 3 inches are crushed field stone and sand .don't use a play sand try to get nice brown coarse sand.put in rocks first then sand to cover wet It Good and pat down with trowel so the sand fills in all gaps . Next 5 inches is a mixture of sand and clay 50/50 , then add above recipe soil recipe about 30 to 40 percent. The top 10 inches is just the soil mix.i Water slowly over the next few days so the beds get moist but not wo soaked with knf nuitrients and imo4 tea with some lactic acid bacteria. Throw In about 100 red worms a few night crawlers and a biodiversity pack from mi beneficials. A few isopods are good too but they can get out of hand fast.they don't self regulate like the worms .if there isn't enough organic matter for them to break down in the soil they will crawl into the canopy and eat the plants.
After every run the soil level drops.a few inches ,we have been playing around with different top dress methods a .i like to throw a biodiversity pack in there after each run too after I top dress. incase i brought in a nasty bug in my top dress. That about covers it.im still learning and tweaking things too.the soil mix can proubly be made hotter with more admendments if you want to just use water, but I'm still using my knf liquid nutes and teas during the grow to boost things.

Here is some info on the no smell chickens @Stoneyluv .I havnt started doing it myself yet so my knowledge is limited. You can use store bought microbes but it will get expensive. I would breed and multiply them myself at home in imo 3 and 4 piles if I was going to use store bought microbes. You can turn a couple spoon fulls into a large pile alot cheaper.the chicken method starts in the first few days with a special brooding box and diet to stretch thier intestines. These links can get you started on research if you are interested.

So, I just needed to get something going, for the two indoor plants. I ended up buying the build a soil 3.0 and filling a couple of 10 gallon grow bags. It took three 1 cu. ft. bags of the pricey stuff, but it does seem to be great quality. I'm still gathering ingredients for putting some plants in the ground outdoors. I'll have plenty of time to make some soil for the next indoor grow and get the next batch in more suitably-sized pots.

I have 24 cubic feet of peat moss and plan to use my own compost for outdoors. I have plenty of compost to measure out an amount equal to the peat moss. I'm struggling to find some stuff, or am only finding it in tiny amounts. I'm looking to make at 72 cu. ft. and hope to find larger quantities for future amendments and/or making up some for bigger indoor pots. Rock dust is one example I'm not finding anywhere around here. Not even breaking it down into basalt, glacial, etc. There's plenty of places to order online, but I'm looking at $250-$300 for freight shipping on a pallet to do that. This order isn't big enough for that to make sense. I'm willing to drive 2-3 hours, if I can find a good farming or hydro shop that carries what I need. I'm not having any luck finding a place like that. We'll be going out of town for Mother's Day. I'm hoping to check out a couple of shops I've found there, but only if it doesn't interfere with my wife's day. I figure there's a fair chance that my wife and daughters will want to get into something and turn me loose

For the rabbit pellets, sunflower seeds and green beans: Do you used an old blender to make it into a meal, or is there something else I should be looking at?

I know it was directed at Stoney, but I have that first chicken video playing in the background. I don't have any odor trouble with my chickens, but I only have 16 hens, currently. There's a lot of birds in that Taiwan video. I've just been using the deep litter method. I bag my lawn clippings and throw them in the run. I have plenty of grass to mow and it's no problem emptying the clippings into the run. It turns into a lot of work every couple of years, when I dig it out and start over. The stuff on the bottom I well composted, but I pile it all up and layer it with fresh clippings to compost fully. I use straw in the coup and nesting boxes and just change it out as needed.

I'm interested in seeing what I can pick up from these chicken videos. I don't know if they do anything like this in the videos, but I plan to get set up to start sprouting trays of barley or something, so I can start feeding them some nice green stuff over the Winter.

Ya its.pretty much just a deep liter living floor almost like what your doing now.just more biology.i know when they are very young first 2 weeks the special brooder box is important, and they feed them just rice then start to incorporate some bamboo .something about stretching thier stomachs. They ferment the feed after they are adults,easier to digest. I can make the solutions and collect the microbes ,but the animal side I'm just getting into.
love build a soil.my buddy that does knf likes thier top dress. The soil recipe I posted isn't set in stone I mostly just use allot of what I have or can pick in the wild. There are proubly alot of realy good recipes online too.if you find any good ones throw them up and tag me. I just use that mix indoors .my outdoor beds just get peat ,compost ,wood chips/rice.hulls and a little wood ash to chill out the acidity of the peat you can use dolomite too and some oyster shell. i throw in whateveri i can get my hands on when i can over the summer and chop and drop everthing that grows in the bed.you can also sub coco for the peat .I use peat cause I can get a truck load for 20 bucks from the bog down the road. For the grean beans and sunflower seeds I just use an old food processor I found in the dumpster. I think I used glacial rock dust. Never tried to find it in bulk. Look for a large wholesale horticulture ware house.we have one about and hour away where we get rice hulls by the pallet.
The big canabiss stalks make.good bio char.i just put them in a Dutch oven in the fire take.15 minutes. Or you can buy the hard wood charcoal for grilling not the briquettes but the chunks just crush it up.make sure to pre charge it with acompost tea or soak it in some chicken floor in water would be perfect.same with wood chips.

Yea he does a main line like me. He is gona try four clones with 8 tops in each 30 gallon next run ,instead of one plant with 32 tops. Should raise the yields and save some time.

Always had trouble getting celery to germinate. Did a bunch of exspiraments with it this year.they like it wet wet wet.

Everything else is just getting started ,been a cold spring this year.picked some garlic that was done.

Planted some soy beans this year to try and exspirament around with a new fermented plant juice/amino acid extraction for canabiss.

Did you make the soil on the tarps and in the white bags?

Are you mulching with grass clippings? I've tried that mulching with clippings, but my grass has more weeds than actual grass. It works for keeping moisture in, but I think I end up seeding in more weeds that pop up as the mulch breaks down, lol. Some cover crop methods have been catching my attention. I might study up on using clover or whatever makes sense for my little garden.

I hope the soy works for you. I don't know anything about it. Does it grow similar to bush green beans?

Ya I do a thick layer of grass and Then some straw or mabey more grass later in summer. Lots of weed seeds in it but the thickness of it keeps them down. I Put about 4 feet of leaves on it last fall and they are gone already.the grass and clover and dandelions come up in early spring through the leaves as a natural cover crop. I Smother them with grass in early june and plant then plant in small hill of fresh compost and peat mix about 3 to 4 inches tall.no till. The white pots are potatoes. The piles of dirt i didn't t make except a little of the compost. Its a pile a compost and a pile of peat moss i can get a truck load of both for $30 .then I mix them half and half couple hand fulls of wood Ash and imo4 .my little cement mixer does 2 buckets of each and a bucket of wood chips for aeration. The wood chips are in the 55 gallon drums and have been soaking for weeks in water faa,fpj,lactic acid bacteria ,imo4 sea salt,vinegar, and ohn . I dump the liquid out then mix them in dirt.i use this mix for raised beds.i also make a mix for my wife's house plants has sand and perilite instead of wood chips. I made a mix for seedlings next year with rice hulls instead of wood chips too. Just store the extra in tyveck demolition construction bags. Can reuse the bags every year. Only built one new raised bed this year.i will dump the potatoes out in the fall till that Into ground and put a new raised bed there next year.. i spray plants foliarly every sunday with knf liquid nuitrients and teas. That and the nuitrient cycle of the thick mulch keeps them happy.. if I pull weeds during the summer or chop plants in the fall it all stays in the garden. All roots stay in the ground from the plants.

Sweet connection on the compost and peat. I can get two 3 cubic feet bales of peat moss for $30 at a big box store, lol.

Everything you're doing just makes sense. Leaving the roots in the ground, etc. I'm learning a lot about healthy soil here. Thanks for sharing your processes.

Ya realy lucky on the peat and compost.the compost is actually free just cost money if you want it loaded with the payloader(i always get it loaded).
We have realy hard clay here so I tilled the larger garden with manure peat and a little sand for the first five years.havnt filled it in about six and it looks great.its amazing how much organic materials it breaks down every year.
