A Turkey In The Hay 🦃

Weatherman said "Record Low Highs" today (figure that one first thing in the morning before coffee🤯)

42°f now, 46° is the old record. I've had a small fire going since Monday morning 🔥

Wifey almost turned the furnace back on this morning. It’s usually turned off in late March but not the last few years.

Turn it off? Gees its was 5c here this morning, poor kitties would freeze. I did drop the thermostat to 65f,...for my drying weed...lol ....its colder in my basement where I have my drying box, 63-64f overnight and humidity is almost perfect I have dehues set at 60%...... Its not been a very good May for us only 1-2 days above 20C, yesterday a high of 10C - 50f.

I found a way to keep my joints dry outside in this climate1748094243063.png

Last day of fire! 🔥

Sometime after midnight tonight I'll throw in my last log for the season, been burning for one straight week

In 23 I had more than one fire IN JUNE 😱, but this doesn't seem to be a spring like that year, despite this unusual cold it's nowhere near as wet

That year it rained 26 out of 28 days

The locals talk about that spring to this day, they call it 'The Summer With No Tomatoes'

Speaking of tomatoes, I'm going to finish putting up the deer netting today, and get the soil tilled this week, grab some plants midweek & get em' in.

I learned my lesson about planting early up here, planting season is at least 2 weeks later than Boston here

When I got everything stacked I had less than I thought, about 3.5 cords, need 4 - 4.5 per season

So I grabbed another cord, it's about 40% Hornbeam! 👈🏻😁👍🏻 aka. Ironwood, one of the highest in BTU'sView attachment 103225View attachment 103226
Nice score on the good stuff!

The ironwood down here is more coastal, I think. It may not be the same variety you have.

Just curious: Does black locust rank on that list? I know it's a good firewood for our area, but it's also prized for fence posts. So, a lot of it doesn't make it to the stove.

Yes, it's rated just below Hornbeam. Had some in 23, it's kinda rare here tho

Thanks. I know what people think about it around here, but was curious how it rated with some of the trees I'm not familiar with. Locust is thick around here. It's a blessing and a curse. They resist rot and make good fence posts. They don't normally get very large. So, easy to handle, but not a lot of firewood in one tree. The saplings spread fast and can be a pain in an area you're trying to keep open. Plus, they have thorns, lol.

That load looks to be well cured, perfectly sized A+ firewood.

Wasn't that much in the delivery, the only thing I remember about the black locust was that the inside was the light green shade of pistachios

He said this was cut last July, just split. Forgot to put the moisture meter on it, will check it in the morning, most has been around 16%, should be 12% by November 😁👍🏻

That's it for me today I got a third of the plastic down but it's not pinned so it's blowing around, I'll finish it up in the morning too hot for me right now, well too humid

I'm enjoying a cold beverage looking at it from the bar right now 😂🍸 I reckon I'll grab the plants this weekend, pop 'em in

Not even bothering with the back Garden this year. I have plans for it next year thoIMG_20250529_151210_01.jpg

I'm doubling this one to 400 sq.ft. and raising it, and I'm going to put six raised 4x8's where the back Garden is and then just wrap dear netting around the whole thing rather than each individual 4×8'

Edit: eventually I'm going to weed whack that mess around the perimeter LOL got to be careful not to rip the netting so I'm taking my time, I'm retired so it'll get done when I get to it 🥳🍸

That's it for this year, just a small garden. First time I've ever used the plastic sheeting
IMG_20250530_100836_01.jpg

Realized I spend more time weeding than I do watering, feeding and tending put together!

I have one of those diamond shaped double sided blade weeders, a hell of a tool, but I still hate weeding! 😡

So I had my coffee, my work clothes on and my vegetables a little before 6:00 a.m.

I'm out there to plant my garden and I realize the plastic is soaking wet

I guess I should have known but I've never used it before so cut me some slack 🤣

So I go in to change, I'm going to do it in shorts and barefoot, I go back out and it's raining

I got the message LOL I'll get to it at some point, I'm retired I've got time 😁👍🏻

Flipped on 4/19, should be done by the end of this month

Taking the summer off, don't need to deal with the heat, not going to air condition plants anymore 🤣

Start seeds again in September, God willing, something good this time, have a harvest in before Christmas 🎄IMG_20250601_073455~3.jpg

So 12 tomatoes, 4 jalapenos and a basil and oregano are planted

6 of the Early girl bush tomatoes didn't have much of a root system & they're very small but I didn't have much to choose from, I hope they'll be all right, the roots were nice and white at leastIMG_20250601_152212.jpg

I’ve got a plan. No indoor summer grow this year.

So I fed my garden just now for the first time, some of the tomatoes aren't looking so good and my basil is being eaten up

But the reason I'm peeved was immediately after I finished feeding it started pouring rain, something neither one of my weather apps mentioned 🤬

So even though I think it's stopped already that's my day right there, I'm not going back out

I was going to do wood for a couple hours but now I'm not going to do a damn thing, I'm just going to take it easy because I'm retired, did I mentioned I was retired? I retired from sitting down the beach 😂🤣😂

Getting there on the wood, just have to finish that last row, then I'll even out the top and anything left over will go inside. I won't cover it until the fall

IMG_20250611_094733.jpg

Got to shake and press some hashish today, I'm down to my last chunk 🤤💨

I'm going to make a nice brown bread in a few minutes and I'm going to make a chocolate coconut ice cream this afternoon, it's been so cold I haven't made ice cream since the weekend

Fed the Cannabis earlier, if I did a flush for the last two weeks I'd probably start now but I just do a taper

Everything's looking fine in there, but I neglected to get a picture, I'll snap one later

Accidentally walked up on a deer again yesterday going to get my mail but it wasn't too close, probably 40 ft away

She didn't run, just stood there and looked at me then watch me go back home, then went back about her business

Ya I keep getting bit by the weather people. I started top feeding with 4:4:4 this year. Let it rain. 🤣

Even today. Sunny and 26* is the forecast. I look outside and it’s dark, humid, 16* and trying to rain off/on. 🤔

Screw meteorology. 🤬

I hear ya, they sure got me today! 🤬 Rained heavy for about 10 minutes and now the sun's out and it's beautiful

It's not just about feeding the garden, when it rains mud splashes on the lower layer of firewood and you can't sweep it off with a broom when it's wet, it just spreads and makes the wood a muddy mess, you got to let it dry and then it sweeps right off. So that ended wood for today 😕
