Asparagus and tomatoes questions

1) So this is the second year for my asparagus and my asparagus ferns are over 6ft tall and some are falling over but staying rooted. As long as they don't come out of the ground is this okay?

2)Has anyone had any tomato plant purchases where they actually grew any taller than a couple feet? Mom purchased some because she was eager . They're about a foot tall and already fruiting tomatoes lol but she also planted seeds right next to them which are doing lovely. I told her she might as well just throw the plants she purchased out but shes hesitant because she doesn't like to waste money lol. I just want to confirm i'm on the right path with this small plant being low yielding?

i grew some tomato plants last year that were 7 ft tall and this year i got some that are about 4 ft tall with tomatoes already bigger then a softball

she might of got some dwarf tomatoe plants they get about 2 feet tall and only have a few tomatoes each plant i grew some about 2 years ago in a tent

Yea that's what im lead to believe. Seems like that would be the easiest way to sell commercially grown tom's.

well on my dwarfs i got 5 or 6 tomatoes per plant on a normal plant u can get so so so much more

When they’re you and start showing flower we pluck the flowers to give the plant more time to veg. Ours normally get between 5-7’

Thanks you guys. Do you think they are able to produce fruits before the flowers show

Flowers turn into fruit, every yellow flower if pollinated will/can become a tomato, by taking the flower early you’re just directing the plant energy from fruiting to growth. You can also pinch of the suckers which again directs energy to the main stem.

I would grow them all. Tomatoes are wonderful and you apparently have different varieties. Grow both and see how you like them. You might like both and decide to save seeds for future crops.

Something I found useful to know about tomatoes is that there are two types: determinate and indeterminate. Determinate tomatoes stop producing fruit at a genetically pre-determined time. Indeterminate tomatoes will keep growing till they can't grow anymore.

I like growing tomatoes and they're popular in our home. I have four tomato plants growing on our balcony. I grew them from seeds from Aerogarden tomatoes we grew a few years ago.

tomatoes are an interesting plant. some are determinate height and some are non-determinate height. Determinate will get to a certain size and fruit, but won't grow much further. typically they range from 2' - 4'. Non-determinate are a vine type that will continue to grow the entire season, and produce fruit so long harvesting continues, or a freeze comes on and kills the plant. These can reach very large sizes and are what most commercial croppers grow.

when purchasing from the store, it's important to check the label for what variety you're buying as you don't want to be surprised either way. for instance, a few years back i mis-read the labels and ended up with absolute monsters of plants and couldn't keep up with the maintenance or harvesting as a result. didn't repeat that mistake because damn was it a PITA to clean up before putting the bed to rest for the winter.
