The shell before the build out.
It will spin, roll, dance, make funny faces at the ganja, speak astrotech droid, check emails, save the galaxy from tyranny, and yes, grow strawberries

IMG_5658.JPG

Strain: 25 Evie 2 Day Neutral Everbearing Strawberry runners
Nutes: Masterblend Powergrow Strawberry Formula, Envy solution grade Cal Nitrate, Pure Original food grade epsom salt
Water: 50/50 tap & RO~ 60ppm
Lights: California Lightworks LED
Concerns: Many

They've arrived!

IMG_5660.JPG

Everything looks ok I suppose?
I kinda separated the wad and have them all soaking in a 1 gallon bucket filled with RO water to wash and rinse what looks like coco off them

IMG_5664.JPG

My main nutes won't be here until Saturday so I'm in a bit of a pickle on the 1st day. I have some nutes that may work for a couple days so will likely do that. I really don't want them soaking in this bucket too long and I'd like to get them in the system by tonight.

In regards to the main nutes I'll be making 5 gallon buckets that are done by measuring the weight of the nutes and not by mils or tbs. Once the nutes are mixed I'll take some and dilute it until I have an EC of 0.6 and a pH of 5.5-6.0

does any hydroten or anything go in the tower? or do the plants just sit in the cups?

give em a little gumbo, no?

also curious, why 50/50 on the tap water, is there something in city water that is beneficial to the plants? i got rain and deep well, i know nothing about city tap other than it tastes terrible.

loved the star wars theme!!!!

Nope no media at all. It's somewhere between aeroponics and nutrient film technique (NFT)
Here's the shower head at the top

IMG_5668.JPG

The pump the system came with was one of those tiny desktop fountain pumps so I gave it my old pump that was running the old UV purifier in my water tank

IMG_5670.JPG

To plant the system I had to take it apart and start at the bottom.
I ran the runners from the inside out. If there's one thing I know about strawberries it's that the crown has to be placed just right. Not too deep and not too high so that was my focus here as well as getting all the roots organized

IMG_5672.JPG

I wasn't too sure about any of this but this morning and checking on it, I'm kinda seeing some life happening!

IMG_5674.JPG

For right now I think not having the main nutes here is a bit of a blessing.
After the bucket soak to rinse off the coco it also looked like there was some clay and it settled at the bottom of the bucket in a sludge. So for these two days they're pretty much getting a deep clean then when the nutes get here I can empty the rez and clean out any remaining sludge or coco.

Right now there is some very mild Fox Farm Grow Big in the water set to pH 6.0 so they are getting some baby food along with the cleaning.

I'm using 50/50 tap/RO for a couple reasons.
#1 is much of the stuff that's in my tap water is also in hydroponic nute formulas so my tap water and hydro play very nice with each other chemistry wise.
I use RO in organics because what is in my tap can kill off microbial colonies but in hydro I'm not using microherds so it doesn't need to be so pure. I am using RO though to dilute the tap so the EC reading is perhaps more accurate in telling me the true concentration of applied nutes and not misleading me with any mystery nutes in the tap water.

I'm not ready to apply any of my hydro-organics AKA Gumbo yet. Not until I understand what will happen with the fundamentals here first but after I get my head wrapped around this then I'll try to get it more organic. I will likely be using some squid either in the rez or as a foliar but that's down the road a ways.

Haha glad you liked the Star Wars intro! I was wondering if anybody would click on it!
Sometimes the internet is just awesome for all it's bad shit and Star Wars Intro Creator is one of those awesome things about it!

Today the wheels arrive so tonight it gets put on wheels and the spinner!

hahaha i just noticed your male all cast to the side like a red headed step child!!!! poor dude!!! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I know right! He's all sad over there like looking at me wondering WTF. He's opening as I type so pollination tonight then it's compost bin for him.
At least that's better than back in the day and blasting male plants with a shotgun :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: 😋

man that is sofa king cool!!!

i like how it's empty and not filled with media like the ones i saw in the past. that'a a great idea with running it on rinse cycle for a day or two to flush off any junk.

after you telling me about your tap water i had to get out my meter and test mine.. batteries were dead! turns out the batteries in the new hess truck fit my meter!! hehe

so i have two taps on my sink, one is just straight plumbed and the other goes through a filter, we use the filtered for the coffee maker and stem mop and stuff we don't want any scaling in. well get this my tap water is 73 and my filtered is 103 wtf?? i think my filter might be BS pinoc ... weird.

so then i just went downstairs and measured my rain water barrel that i keep down there. rain water hits my roof down the gutter through a pcv tube and in a hdpe tote and sits in there year after year and never gets emptied or changed. weeds grow from the top and i assume roots are in it. i keep it sealed from light and do nothing else to it. i then take water from there through a water safe rv hose to another hdpe 55 gallon drum in my basement where i keep an airstone and add vitamin B when i fill it.

bro i just measured it and it says 008 ppm!!! how is that even possible? you think it's a false reading? the ph is always perfect too!!

maybe i should start drinking that water instead of my well water!!! it's all the little rocks in my gutters over the years from my shingles that filter it so well!!! hehehe

.

i can't wait to see you r2d2 head on it, it will be even better than your cloner droid!!!

the wheels will make it nice to move around room when you need to get to the plants and fill it up. do you have to fill it through that tiny hole in the corner? looks like a little 3/8' hole from here, does a funnel even fit in there?

looks like growth on every one though that's awesome!!!! did you get those runners local or through the mail?

.
.

and bro you made me go looking for a blast from the past...

That video cracks me up every time!!!

Water chemistry used to kick my ass so bad and I'd wonder why I had fucked up plants. It wasn't until I had a full understanding of what I'm working with then my gardens began to take off and do great.

I know just by location you have awesome water. Rain or well, it's great.
I think your meter is accurate because that's how weird it can get!
Garbage eating plants make great filters and can do a really good job pulling heavy metals and all kinds of shit from water to make it pure. Charcoal carbon and sand also make great filters. It sounds like you have an outstanding naturally occurring water filter.

But yeah man around here some wells are damn near brackish at well over 1000ppm. And rain is hit or miss when collected in large cities with lots of air pollution. We get acid rain as a result of air pollution depending on time of year. It's not uncommon for rain collectors here to have to RO it!
And tap water...uughh. When you have a monopoly over water like we do with LCRA, you have humans ripe for corruption at every point and is why our water is so screwy.
My water has gotten easier to work with as it's gone from around 350ppm ten years ago to 150 today.
Really that should be my next experiment is to do a side by side with tap vs ro and see if I can dial back on my needing RO.
It's hard though because RO is a crutch for me. So much so I trust my RO more than I do collected rain.
And when I do get into collecting rain again it's getting UV and at least a carbon filter.

The rinse cycle on the tower did very well. Not too much sludge after but still a very good cleaning.
I've already decided to upgrade the rez to a translucent 5 gallon bucket. It'll take it's 2 gallon rez and more than double it's size. So filling, and gas gauge will be different here very soon.

I got these runners off Amazon of all places!
Most common places to mail order strawberry runners are out of season right now but on etsy and amazon some are still shipping. I didn't check ebay though so there might be some there too. This was an order for 25 runners but it came with 27. There might be 2-3 duds in the bunch but everything else looks alive.

I've done my first batch of nutes and ran the conversion on weight to tsp because weighing out nutes every time sounds like a real PITA.
These are far from organic but IMO safe and good to use. They all dissolved almost instantly when added to water.
I was concerned I might have to use hot water to dissolve like some other dry hydro nutes but all good here.
Not in the pic is Foop pH up and down and while it's not organic either, is really clean and better than earth juice pH adjusters IMO.
I'm using a Blue Lab truncheon which pretty much has every scale for American or Euro nute scales. I'm using it's EC scale since most feed charts I look at also use EC for berries.

IMG_5691.JPG

The mix went very well. It came out concentrated at 2x what I need so I cut it with RO and adjusted pH.
The nute solution looks very clean with a crystally green tint to it so it should run very well in this system with little to no salt build ups.
I saw an almost immediate positive reaction from all the starts so that was nice to see.

And yep...we gotta spinner here!!! I need to wrangle the cords a little better and cleaner and use the remote control to slow it down, maybe have it stop and go or something but it's coming along great so far!

Fogged up lens messed up all my grow journal update pics but I did get a decent video of the adjusted spinner slowed down and doing a back and forth spin rather than continuous. This pretty much eliminates any chance of a cord wrapping and still gets light to every pod

Good growth happening as well but I think I have two dud runners.
Today the tower gets a 5 gallon rez upgrade

Gonna have fresh strawberries for days dude. Hell yeah

I sure hope so! I counted six flowers last night. I saw one two nights ago and thought wow that's neat then six last night. They should self pollinate but I'm gonna use my Be The Bee tool to help with that.
It's pretty much an electric tooth brush with silicone bristles 😋
dang those came in fast!

That was my thought too! I really didn't expect much to be happening the first week. It all seems too ez and working too well.
I thought it would be way harder and slower than this and I was concerned my room temps wouldn't be right and all sorts of other concerns but damned if it aint working a treat for now!

I'm most pleased with how they feed and drink. They're light sippers and the food is ez compared to the ganja that guzzles water and eats like hogs. We'll see if that's still the case as they grow bigger 😉

How's youre envy bag of nutes like?

The 5-12-26 envy I bought was clumpy and poorly mixed together.

I Would not buy it again, could have been how it was stored, from Amazon.

🤷‍♂️

Edit: as that's cal nit, probably not fair to compare to the 5-12-26 envy salt mix

Mine is loose and course like rock salt and dissolved as soon as it got wet.
The other two nutes and salt are the same. Very ez to work with.
Masterblend Powergrow also comes in other formulas not unique to strawberries and gets a lot of 5 star reviews. I didn't read any about clumping for those or the berry formula

i've ran into that with a few different things from amazon re: growing stuffs. Expired hydroguard, protekt that looked like it had sat in the sun for a decade, other salt additives that were basically like bricks because of however tf amazon was storing the shit. i think they probably have a different set of warehouses specifically for that kind of stuff given the fact it can be highly combustible or explosive if mixed with the correct other compounds.

Beirut comes to mind.....

Tons of ammonia nitrate I think it was setting in a warehouse......

BOOOM

Little update to share....

The tower will get it's full wholesale rez change this weekend. So far after the 5 gallon upgrade it's taken up about half that and replenished with RO to keep it topped off.

I also felt it may have been getting over watered with continuous flow so I've put it on a recycling timer to pump water for about 2 minutes every 15 minutes only during lights on
