Seed popping question

Ok so many times when sprouting seedlings I get some that will pop a tail but thats it. They just like don't grow any further and just die. I soak in water then use paper towels for a day or two then in the dirt. Does this mean that these seeds were old and less viable? Or is this like what happens when not stored correctly?

Very good question, probably gonna be a bunch of thoughts on this deal.

I'm the same boat brother...it used to be anything that even showed a tap root that got a taste of grow media I could guaranteed that plant was going to grow.

But that was like over 10 years ago, so there's that..IDK....

It's one of the reasons I do vertical germination then came up with an actual device for it. Used to be just a CD case or DVD case but now it's a 3D printed plastic wall design deal.

Every step of the way, it lets you peek in at what's happening.
There's the pop then yes some stall and die. Some false pop by swelling with water and bursting open but nothing really grows.
There's there mutants and who knows what else.

The VG lets you watch the pop and watch the tail grow.
It should grow straight without deforming or curling. In 2-3 days the helmet naturally comes off since it's been so well saturated so no helmet head sprouts.
It prevents dampening off in most cases and simply eliminates any mystery of germination. Here's a link to how it works.

It happens to me when the seeds are too new, and haven't cured a couple weeks. Frozen seeds work best imo.

That's a good point. I've always believed seeds need a cure.

I don’t know about cannabis seeds but some vegetable seeds can be used right away like cucumber but others need to be treated. As an example tomato seeds should be extracted with the juicy inside and left to sit about ten days. Don’t let it mold. Then you can dry and store or use.

Pretty much the opposite for me. Freezing does hold them long term but some of my best germinations were on breeding projects with seeds coming from live buds and germinating with heads up inside 100 hours from being in flowers.
I think when they're harvested plays in regards to viability, the more over ripe the better, and how much calcium was fed to the mom plays a role in how hard the shell is and how long it takes to open with extreme cases needing long soaks and scuffing

So does vertical germination actually help the seed grow since it is more like natural being upright? Trying to see what the advantage is here.
