Welcome Aboard the 4:20 Pineapple Express!

I wonder if you made it nearly air tight so that all the evaporation is channeled up through the grow grooves.. wonder if that would be enough to germ? Maybe soak the seeds for 24 hours beforehand? Or maybe stretchwrap over the top to trap all the humidity in there until it shoots a root?

Just spitballing.

Kicking around several ideas and yeah one is kind of a fogger similar to what you're saying with the evaporation with the VG sitting on top of a fogger shooting a water fog up into the grooves.
To get them to pop and germinate is really ez and not much too it. I could probably wrap a seed in paper towel so it's in a cocoon of moisture to pop it but it's after the pop where it gets tricky.
Since it goes well beyond opening to reveal a pigtail, I need irrigation for that tap root and to keep moisture in those grooves for that tap, all the while keeping it transparent.
One idea that's difficult to explain is a total redo of the grooved wall so it has a built in air lift pump that will move water up to the top and let it trickle down thru the channels. Essentially, vertical NFT in a micro system for sprouts powered by a very small, battery powered, 3 watt air pump.
This will be a fun challenge to get it working

Thought I'd drop a little witchcraft on Y'all with a rez change day.

The players

55 gallons of purified water is loaded into the white barrel about one week ahead of the change keeping it aerated and set to room temp.
Two buckets are used during a change...the white 3 gallon is for emptying the rez and the black 2 gallon is for filling it.
The nutrient reservoir is the large 40 gallon livestock tub on the floor and it's plumbed up to the grow bed to flood and drain the bed.

First, the old rez is emptied then I use the black bucket to refill it and count how many buckets I use. On an empty rez, it's 50 buckets and that makes 30 gallons.

My water base ppm is 140 and pH is 9.0 so that's where things start.
There's some nuance to my water and how it reacts to hydroponic fertilizer. Long story short, my water plays excellent with the stuff but it's very ez to get too hot.

If I'm mixing up a batch of nutes to max strength, I set that for 20 gallons and not the full 30. Little lesson learned the hard way.

The plumbing is disconnected so the pump can circulate the water for mixing and I begin adding the ingredients.

This particular formula calls for a 2-1-1 parts mix of grow, micro, and calmag so for this 30 gallon rez it wll be 40tsp of grow going in first and letting circulate for 10-15 minutes. Next up is micro and then calmag, each with a 10-15 minute gap between additions.

When I set up this medium the pH came out a little on the high side at 6.8 so for this first change after upcan I'm gonna set the pH a little on the low side between 6.0 and 6.2. and bring that 6.8 down into a more preferred range around 6.3-6.5 correcting it. 6.8 aint bad but I like that 6.5 more.

After the nutes mix for about an hour I check the pH. It was at 6.7 and I want it down a few ticks before I send it upstairs.

These are the adjusters I have to use and both are for hydroponic nutrient solutions specifically so they're not for pools or fish, just for hydroponics.
They're used to adjust a little at a time and to be used very sparingly after nutes are mixed with the water.

The 30 gallons at 6.7 only needed two tablespoons of pH down before I saw this...6.04 and a happy face!

So my rez is set and now I check my moisture sensors.....

Two probes confirming > 50% moisture along with a 6.04 and 1000ppm fresh rez only means one thing now...Send it!!!

A couple hours after the flood and checking the return....

Will keep this rez going for a week then change it out and repeat this process all over again every 7-10 days.
Looking good buddy!! Are they regular beanstalk?

Hey what is making the current in there? Boat is moving pretty good...

Thanks man.
It's this pump here circulating the water

After I pull the plumbing tube off I stick the pump to the sidewall and turn it on so it pretty much works like a mixing spoon stirring the tank. After mixing I reconnect the tubing so it can flood the bed again so it's one pump with two jobs

Hahaha...I was looking at "recirculation pumps".…some of them fukers look just like Bilge pumps.... Hehehe I have a brand new in a dry box in the boat.....

Yeah man I'm surprised you're not using a bigger pump for that that current there. Yup I need a good stir-n

Probably gonna need to get crafty engineeriy...for a soft sided res...error!

Right on bro... thanks

IMO it's better to stick the pump on the bottom and roll the water over than to stir it but since my rez is a lowrider, if I point the pump upward I'll have a fountain⛲

If I were you I'd stick the pump on the bottom and point it up. The depth should keep it from turning into a fountain and you'll get an effect exactly like what happens in nature when a lake "rolls over" with the season changes and mixes up all the oxygen and nutrients in the lake water.

If the pump does make a fountain there's a thing on it to cut the flow and slow it down but I like mine wide open for mixing so that's why you see mine set sideways and setting track qualifying records🙃

This might be the coolest one yet!

First off...Fog keeps coming to the forefront as a way to not only irrigate a VG but a lil tip of the cap to Moe.
Second..Pirate Boarder's doob toob germinator on reddit.
The corrugated insert of the VG with the top removed is pretty much a doob toob card. So I have an idea that maybe instead of grooves, they become tubes and those tubes are filled with fog.
If that works then the VG doesn't even open. You simply pull the sprouts out from the top and since there's no paper, there's nothing for the root to snag onto.
Now the question is, how to suspend the seed in the tube?

This is getting so close I can smell it.

This is probably as transparent as I can get with the filament. Seems like it's clear enough for me stick a time lapse camera against it and video a live germination happen.

be great if we could cheat each week like this... two different devices and i got fireworks twice!!! hahaha
