What weed grinders do you like? Do you even grind?

Reading what concerns you about grinders along with other replies here and what my own needs for one in regards to testing potency demands, I've decided to take on this project of developing a new grinder or slicer.
I'm pretty much using meat grinder tech similar to the new "slicers" like Xhale and Klip. I'm not interested in a crusher style grind. I need the weed to homogenized for testing, not mauled and mutilated with resin left behind in the grinder. Pretty much trying to get a touchless effect.
Still in R&D stages now but here's where it's going with the first rough prototype....

Not too happy with this blade that came with my kit so will be using a different one when it gets here Thursday. The new style will look like a Chinese throwing star and be slightly more dangerous.
All blue plastic is food grade 3d printer filament and all steel is food grade as well but more on precautions in a bit....

I consider kief collection in a grinder to be a useless and futile feature.
I'd rather have a grinder that doesn't keep anything so I've made the bottom collection bowl shaped and will later either adapt a stainless steel or food grade silicone bowl insert so no trich is left behind

Meat grinder plates. Lots of options to use in regards to how fine or chunky you want the grind and they can easily be removed along with the blade for cleaning in an iso soak

The top and Spinner for the blade are still just a drawing on my PC but will come to life at some point today. Still working on perfecting the center part with spokes so it's on it's third print and each print for that part is a little over 7 hours.

The top that will have contact with the herb will have a silicone liner between it and the herb.
Eventually as it develops, the only plastic herb will come in contact with will be the spokes and side wall which are both food grade. Every other contact point will be either food grade silicone or food grade stainless steel. I would consider the toxicity contamination to be less than that of using a sandwich baggie for carrying some weed around.
Cool. Looking forward to the end result.

Until 2008 all I used was surgical scissors in a pill bottle. Put in the weed and chop until happy.

On a vacation with buddies in Amsterdam we all bought metal grinders. They opted for the kief catcher but I don’t see the point of saving what I can smoke now so got a regular one.

After I started growing I found I needed a bigger grinder. Seems anything I could find came with the keif catcher. A little disappointed as I rarely remember to empty it…but when I do it’s usually got enough to make hash. Still I’d rather smoke it with the weed fresh.

I tried using an old coffee grinder before I started growing. It was okay but I didn’t like it. It’s also more work to clean.

I like smoking out of a pipe. Pipe tobacco is longer, more stringy than chopped or chunky. A normal grinder leaves too many small particles that end up in your mouth or in the stem over time. I’m wondering if your design would make the weed more string like?

I’ve been on the fence about buying a new grinder that chops as it a lot more $$$. So watching this thread and now your design before making any new purchases.

Thanks man.
When it's made by stoners for stoners, it will always hit a little different.;gr

I'm in the same category as Tre waiting to hear from Xhale so in the meantime, I'll figure it out. It's a fun pet project really.

What I've learned over the past week in regards to parts is that some of these grinder people should be ashamed of the prices they're asking.
Something like Klip or Xhale is very unique but lets be real here...There's about $15-$35 worth of material/parts in there and much of it is already made for another industry such as butchers and meat grinding. When I see a $180 grinder, all I really see is something that cost at most $40 to make. Double it up for retail profit and it should be $80 on the shelf in the USA.

I'll have STL files soon as well as recommended meat grinder parts kits so it will be print, assemble, play for you guys north of the border.
The prints are basic for the most part except for the center section which requires build support.
Each piece should be on the highest quality settings your slicer program has. It will add print time but the end quality is worth it.

If people will want to buy one of these grinders made to order I don't think it will be more than $35+shipping. Plate kit and better blade is the biggest expense and together they're only $25 for each grinder. If I search more I may be able to get that even lower but maybe only have one plate and one blade.

My pal running the hydroshop grows tobacco and it's a totally different animal. It's a large leaf kinda like rhubarb or something and is best processed thru a machine that looks like a paper shredder but is fed manually and has a hand crank to roll the leaves thru it.
Tobacco is a really cool plant to grow too. Pops a cool trumpet looking flower cluster and makes a great ornamental plant if it likes your climate. Kinda tropical looking.

I'm onto something but will definitely need the different blade for it to work how I think it should.
I'll also need to change up the spinner handle. The leaf is cool but uncomfortable.
With this blade and weed with about 12-15% moisture activity it didn't fare too well. Dispo dry AF weed it would probably do fine but it needs a different style blade for sure before I tweak anything other than the handle for now...

without the press cover

My idea is to take 7 nugs and sort of get them in a head lock while the blade below shaves them down

IMG_1570[1].jpeg

The top is two pieces being the top and press then the spinner on top with a shaft that goes thru the whole body and locks into the blade

I like the press feature.
The Bud Wakker uses gravity so can need to be bounced around sometimes.

Nice work there...

I got a reply from Xhale today...July 22 is the ship date.
I was a bit harsh in my inquiry and told him to give my money back since the product does not exist and I was filing a claim w/ paypal.
Got a same day reply and a ship date lol.

Still working on my 3D printed option. Still searching for the perfect blade

Yea, I too, am three weeks in, and no update or reply from my email query.

So I contacted my CC company and filed a claim. My account was credited in hours.

I received a personal email from Josh within hours of my refund. He claimed delays and said he issued a full refund as if it was voluntary on his end. He asked if I would like to be on a waiting list.

I have not replied, as he ghosted me at first, so now let's see how he likes it.

I actually feel bad. I wanted the product.

Good luck on your blade hunt.

that really sucks.. i'm all for a small timer making a new product and trying to bust their way in but ghosting your customers is no way to get started. i bet both of you guys would be totally understanding if he would have sent you a message.. i mean lets face it modern business men are glued to their cell phones, it only takes less than a minute to send a message. there is no excuse not to.

i get messages for my business every day just about and it takes me on an average of just 5-7 seconds to write back. no excuse for ghosting!

There's a culture within a generation or two where ghosting is a "hack" in life. They're very wrong.
Ghosting is a huge issue with my wife's employees who cycle thru the entry level positions. About 5 jobs a year and can only fill 3 reliably. The other two are a revolving door of no shows and ghosting.
Ghosting during the interviews is a major issue and now they're pretty cut throat about it with zero tolerance.
In my business, it always means you either didn't do your job or your bullshitting. There's no in between because #1 people are always looking at their phone and other than an emergency should be able to at least send a text.
We're well past any coddling it's happened so much and often. There is no warning and a second chance. It's you didn't call, you're fired. Business, same thing. Get one chance to do their part and if not, sick buyer protection on them. You have to actually threaten firing or sicking a lawyer on them for a response.
The honor of being a square dealer and straight shooter is lost on many.

i'm right with them man, i don't put up with it either. i've been ghosted in both biz and personal and i won't stand for either anymore. maybe in my younger days i had more patience for it but not today.. if it's biz ghosting i'll never buy from again and will tell everybody i know. if it's personal and somebody wants to take their love from me then i don't want it back!

this happened with me with cream city vapes, i feel like such a chump and i will never let that happen to me again. i wish i would have been more pro active and wasn't and by time i tried to go legal it was too late. never again is all i can say! those fuckers stole $385 of mine a few years ago.

Coming back to say one of the best grinders I have ever used~!
Super easy to use and clean but I have not cleaned it yet.
Nicely built. If it gets jammed you just stuffed it too much.
Real quick and easy learning curve with it.
Highly recommended.
Love having chopped herb rather than ground.;hop

Honestly it’s the plastic yoyo look that throws me off. Gives me the impression it’s cheap and easy to break. We have a few freebie plastic grinders we tried once or twice and never used again.

It’ll be interesting to see how it holds up over steady use. 🤔

can you grind enough in one spin to fill a joint? or do ya have to grind a few times to get enough?

I grind up to 3 joints at once depending on the buds hardness.
Sometimes I grind twice for 3+.
It takes like 15 seconds.
1 joint easy peasy.

alright, might make for some nice gifts! i'm thinking on it.. cheaper by the dozen kind off thing.

is it your go to grinder right now?

Yea my old spinner was really a PIA so this is it. It reall is easier than any other grinder I have used.
I bought two and now there is a sale buy 4 get 1 free.
I can send you my extra to try out and if you like just pass it to Bandit after you get yours for his testing.

just bought five for $80 ... $16 each makes a great gift or prize!!

Talked to my son about it. We both have large metal ones that get gummy. But after looking into it it’s only available through amazon Canada for $100. 😳😤

Owners don’t ship outside US and I’m guessing duty and tariffs. So we’ll wait and see what Bandit can create. Build one in parts. Stupid border BS.

XHALE update...

I received an email within a couple hours, from Josh, the owner. This occurred when I reached out to my CC company for a refund. I received the refund almost immediately and then the email from Josh.

I decided to ghost him for a couple weeks. As this is something he is very familiar with.

I did, finally, reply. In my reply, I provided a play by play of what transpired regarding his poor comms etc. And explained how it is not a good business practice to conduct his business in this way. I closed with an invitation of my own. I offered him an opportunity to send me a comped product for review. And I offered to share my entire experience on the forum I belong too.

So, where is the stellar product from Josh, that is going to change our lives for the better? When do I get to review it and share with my community and increase Josh's sales? Hmmm...yea, that's not happening. Not sure there even is a product. I keep getting email invitations to join a list. And emails with manufacturing delays as a result of product finishing inconsistencies.

I'm back to ghosting. He can shovel his shit somewhere else.

Please know that I am not a dick...just not taking anyone's shit anymore. And, if an opportunity presents itself, whereby I can offer some advice or just dump on them...I do. Hey, if you got balls to fuck with me, then I have a bat to fuck over your balls.

Sad thing is, it doesn't have to be like this.

Lastly, how you doing Bandit?

I got the same email about the mismatched color or whatever yesterday.

The next date I'm looking at is July 22 then I'll go from there.

My DIY is there but I need to go in another direction with the blades by either finding a food processor blade I can adapt or get the Klip blade and build around them, basically making the Klip slicer for roughly around $25 each.

In regards to grinding for smoking I'm like most and prefer hand grind but do it a little different.
I freeze my weed after several weeks of cold cure which makes it super ez to hand grind.
I go from cure at around 50*F then freeze up after 3 weeks down to 30*F.
Keep my daily stash in the freezer as well so when I burn one, just pull a frozen nug and give it firm pressure. It will crumble to a perfect grind for rolling. By the time I lick the paper, it's already thawed and ready to set on fire but still cold. The terp load gets nuts on some strains because you burn them at every level from cold to hot so you get them separated in the early hits before it all blends together. In that ladder climb is some really wild flavors in weed. Got one now the first three hits off a doob taste like black licorice.

yesterday i got my four bud wackers and did npt get one free.. last night i sent them an email and today i already had an apology and a tracking number waiting for me. thats some great customer service!!! no questions no blame no nothing.. just an honest apology for an honest mistake and already taken care of!! how it should be folks!!!
i kind of really like it... i was scared off when it said the string was made of uhmw polyethylene and i've worked with plastics all my life and especially materials commonly used in wet process semi conductor mfg. but i think they mean the mechanism inside is made from uhmw the cord is strong nylon or something.. btw, dont google it.. uhmw= ultra high molecular weight

002.JPG

it did well, the material is less mashed like Steam said.

for those of us who are into preserving our trichomes than this is a much better option than a mill or tooth grinder. you can fell the difference instantly.

005.JPG

normally i have been using a plain ol speed grinder... the bud wacker is a much better option!!!! not as fast but nothing else is over one of those speedy ones!!

006.JPG

but i'm gonna leave this here and say this here is probably the coolest grinder in the galaxy!!!!!!!!!! the fuckin death star grinder!!!!! yup!!!!
