Do you think weed is better now than in the 70s, 80s and 90s?

I did a simple search and my stoned arse didn’t see anything like this, but it seems like a question than has to have been asked before!

Is weed better today than it was in decades past?
I didn’t smoke in the 60s, not idea what it was like, but in the 70s and 80s, I had some of the greatest weed I can possibly imagine. Aromas that just apparently don’t exist anymore!
I used to regularly get something called “Purple Sierra”, it was purple and smelled like a Christmas tree farm.
My buddy used to get thai stick that a pinner share by 4 people would render all of us wasted!
I smoked some African weed that was like mushrooms! I sat in my yard and watched grass grow for a few hours!
I can also remember some skunk that smelled like Pepe le’ pew’s ass pipe!

Today, I have froot loops, berry and skunk that even occasionally smells a little! Even my own weed doesn’t compare to those aromas (in my memory)!

Now, the weed today is probably more potent, but I’m not sure I’d check off the “better” box though. Just way different!

In my humble opinion, I prefer the weed from my memories, but I’m pleased with the weed from my garden!

Your experience and stories welcomed!

I'm awful at chess, I used to play a Russian down the beach quite often, not sure if I ever won a single game 😕♟️
I started playing when I was in about grade 3, my dad taught me the moves and a few of us kids used to play at school. I never joined any chess clubs in high school they were too Geeky for me and I'd found drugs by then. I have a small magnetic board and pieces I used to travel with, Played on Plane, trains & busses, beaches & beds. When I bought a Commodore 64 back in the 80's I had my first computer program that would kick the shit out of me but I could replay moves and try again and again and again to get my moves right. Eventually I was able to beat it up to about level 6 out of 10.
Now with chess.com I play folks all over the world in 10 min games every day. I'm about a 1550 rated player, experts start at 1600. to be a master you'd be around 2200 if you don't play a lot but know the moves you'd come in at1200, if you've never played you'd be an 800 for comparison

Hey, I saw this one and thought of you, caption said its a King??.....fk I just read what I wrote...don't think of it that way....its not what I meant....lol1747429963212.png

I yet to have any modern cannabis that makes feel like I’m on acid for thirty minutes. I’ve had weed in the eighties and did that. Several times. Super long flowering sativas are something to behold of you let them finish. You cannot find that in any dispensary in America.
You were 45 years younger then too and pot did take a jump once Sinsemilla was introduced, then skunks, they all bumped the game up a bit once folks got growing indoors and played with strains.

I think it was time and place stuff with an upgraded weed that gave you that buzz...Concentrates are at the top of the game now and I think that sht would rock you back to the 80's again with enough of it.

Exactly 🎯 I was accused more than once of having "treated" cannabis when it was just my homegrown real Skunk #1, and even that was nowhere close to what we were getting in the early 70's

Like I said above real Skunk #1 was the last respectable cannabis, or at least the last old school type cannabis. Now it's nothing like it was, it's very weak compared to old school cannabis.

Okay I'm sitting here on a cold rain day and made up my thoughts in paint....laugh as you will at my 15 min work but it gets my thought across in a picturepots thc climb tolerance.png

I think I see the confusion, I'm talking about high-end red and gold Colombian, not Mexican dirt weed.
That would be in the sensemilla bubble,In Vancouver Mexican dirt weed was the earliest we had then Red & Gold Colombian then the Red sensemilla for me, in California 75-76, Hawaiian in Hawaii in 77-80 then Skunk Back in Vancouver 80--95

I'm starting to feel sorry that you had such shitty weed when you were young 😂

In the early seventies the hash we thought we were smoking turned out to be opium 🥳 so I guess I was just blessed to be in a good place with the best weed etc.

Look up your countryman Ma Boucher in Montreal, big time player back then and Hells Angel, that's where I got my weed etc. from, HA friends in Lowell Ma.

I'd never heard of Haze until I moved east and started growing in my basement. Never grown any myself just know the strain by name

I agree with everything you said. I never grew a store bought seed until 2018. I've grown a few different brands since then, but noting is as good as the stuff I grew in the early 80. I'm 100% convinced the Cannabinoids have changed for the worse. Old school Colombian leaves will get you very high, especially when made into oil. That's because the THCP was in the leaves imo. My breeding experiments prove to me it's all genetic. My Colombian crosses are by far better than any new strains I've tried.
That said, (and i'll probably get a lotta hate for saying it) - the best store bought seeds I've grown is from Cali Connection.

Brainfart comparison Pot is beer and not whiskey, maybe concentrates are a hard booze equivalent but pot gets me to here as I hold my arm up, whiskey gets me to here....lol...then flat on my face,,,pot don't do that, never has, except when I was young smoking Lebanese Hash off cigarettes in friends basements.

Agree regarding Cali Connection, Swerve's LA Affie is the finest cannabis I've grown in the last decade, I grew it for several years.

I wonder if cannabis has been genetically modified, I know that sounds far-fetched but most people don't realize that almost all corn grown in the United States (90+%) is genetically modified

The other more likely possibility is that we've bred it to death over the last 40+ years. I bred the stink out of real skunk#1 over a period of 10 years (87-97) because I couldn't control the stench, and it did lose quite a bit by the end of my run with it

I'm curious where you're getting the good Colombian seeds, I would like to give that a run myself?

Around the time Colombian gold was $40 oz, we was getting Blond Lebanese for $150. Today's concentrates are not even close to 70's-early 80's imo -and it's all to do with thcp or something yet to be discovered.

Are seeds for any of these sativa seeds available out there? If so, any recommendations on what I should be looking for?

Back when I grew outdoors in the 80's I had more than a few people say they thought the weed was laced.
Some did not believe me when I said I grew it and one never understood why I said ' if you really think so I have done my job well~!'
For over 4 years I grew outdoors using bag seed and seeds from plants the year before.
There were no female only seeds back then just the random herm seeds you felt lucky to get.
Everyone always wanted a herm for it's 99% female plants.
I am the youngest and remember my brothers getting real Hawiian, Panama Red, Acapulco Gold and Thia stick.
My eyes would get so red they could have been bleeding~!

How was the Opium hash lol, I wanted to make some.

I'm gonna grow my own poppies eventually.

I've read there more difficult to cultivate in doors, challenge accepted.

Maybe. I think the problem is you will be growing a twenty foot plant that takes three to four months to flower and that’s pretty much not possible indoors unless you have lots of room. If you live somewhere tropical or even like California you may have better luck growing. Some of those sativas also flower on weird schedules. Like 11/13 and so on. Also most landrace Sativas are very prone to herm on you and also I’ve heard you need to do serious pheno hunting to find what you are looking for. I would start with African cannabis. I bought some of these seeds but never got a chance to grow them out and I don’t think the ones I have are viable anymore.

After looking at a lot of the pictures on the landrace team website I can tell that a lot of them are grown out at the Jade Nectar farm in California. He has a YouTube channel and grows huge landrace cultivars with psychedelic effects. He makes tinctures out of them and sells them in Cali. I would love to try them and grow out whichever ones have the effects I like. I live in central Oregon and have a short growing season so I would have to grow these indoors. After seeing how huge these plants get I don’t know if I could. Maybe I could have supplemental lighting in the greenhouse, I dunno.

It was late '60s early '70s when this was around so we were very young so I don't recall much

It could have been opium mixed with hashish, was red and sticky

We didn't know, and so when we got regular hashish we were very unhappy with it, so it kind of caused issues

Thanks! This really catches my interest. I know some Durban Poison is grown outdoors around here, but I'm sure it's some bastardized, watered down variant. You've given me a rabbit hole to go down.

Yeah man I want psychedelic weed again. If you want to see how big these plants get go see Jade Nectars YouTube channel. If I ever can afford it I would like to add waterproof lights and a de-humidifier to my greenhouse and attempt to grow and finish some of these plants. But it may be tough when some won’t finish until late December/November and get as big as a school bus. At that point it’s freezing outside here so I would be running propane to heat at night. I’m sure it can be done. It sucks only growing hybrids and indicas during the grow season. Me want some of that good cannabis that is now rare in the states. It’s all poly-hybrids that all have the same high. People really screwed up the gene pool. I’m starting breeding my own to have more pure indicas. I am trying to at least get away from hybrids and focus on indicas. After smoking nothing but hybrids for years I smokes some pure indica and it hit me like a freight train. Now my greenhouse only has four hybrids and the rest are all indicas. I think we need to fully separate Indica/sativa landrace strains and fix the issue.

This is the path I'm trying to get on.
I do believe long flowering sativas can be managed indoors with short veg times since they do a ton of vegging thru early flower.
I agree hybridization has muted effects of their landrace cousins and pollen chucking has made things worse.
We were at a point where weed was better but it's taken a huge step back in recent years and what was old is now better again. This debate is cyclical but given the trajectory of new strains I'm betting more and more come to the realization the old stuff was indeed better.
There's been a drive to produce the most frosty flowers and it's become obvious more frost does not translate to greater potency. It's pure eye candy and nothing more. Frost in 2025 is what purple was in 2005 and neither one has made weed better.
Some of these hybrids aint even worth smoking in flower form and need to be concentrated.
I want the flower that made hippies trip balls at Woodstock and soldiers in 'Nam hallucinate. Fuck most of this new shit.

Thanks, man! I'll check out Jade Nectars, for sure.

I did read a grower's comment on one of the long flowering strains. He said he was in New York. He started in a tent, moved outdoors when it warmed up and then moved into a greenhouse in the Fall. He claimed the greenhouse temps dipped into the upper 40s some nights, but the plant acted like it didn't even notice. I can't remember which strain. I read about a lot of them, lol.

Yes bring back Nam weed lol!! We need shit so strong it makes you have Nam flashbacks when you weren’t even there!

Nooiiice. What are you growing? I’m thinking about growing some landrace sativa inside this coming winter. Maybe hit 12/12 from seed.

Vietnamese 3 Way by Equilibrium : Vietnamese Silver Leaf (Hoa Bac) ♀ x (Vietnamese Black x Da Lat Vietnamese) ♂

Vietnamese Silver Leaf (Hoa Bac) ♀ is a Sativa heirloom collected in Vietnam in the 1990's, given to Reeferman Seeds by a friend who wanted to promote the best cannabis genetics from Vietnam. Its origins are from the Comere people of Vietnam, who are originally from Cambodia. Because of this, Hoa Bac Silver Flower grows similar to Cambodian varieties. It is chunky, early finishing (for a pure Sativa) and has wider leaves. The flowers smell of rotten fruit.

Vietnamese Black x Da Lat Vietnamese ♀ is a cross of Vietnamese Black and Da Lat Vietnamese.

Vietnamese Black is the one rumored to have hallucinogenic effects so it's DNA is there ready to be tapped.

SnowHigh Seeds Description of Da Lat:

This is a saving of a line more than a preservation, as the seeds were very old and took a long time to germinate. These are not like the Vietnam Black, these are weeping willow, curly, leafy, wild and long branches that grow up from the ground and drape over.

The flowers are tight, with good resin, but very small glands. Most all phenotypes are green, with the occasional purple phenotype. If people work the line, the purple phenotypes will become more common.

After this grow I'm gonna hit up Equilbrium again and likely get something Ethiopian or African while also looking for an Afghani on the indica side.
Basically looking for stuff that's actually been bred and is not too far from it's landrace version and am mostly focused on Southeast Asian, African, and Middle Eastern variety.
Skunk will come from South American and Mexican varieties so there's that honey hole and also some things from the South Pacific, like a landrace version of Pineapple Express or Maui Wowie is also on my radar.

This answers my "weeping willow" question from your thread.
