When buffering a solution, in short, would one go down to, let's say 4pH and back up to target pH?

Could be. What’s important is how you get there.

A combo of strong and weak acids and bases is what you are trying for.

General hardness is not all that important for buffering. Carbonate hardness is a measurable form of buffer with test strips but does not tell the whole story either.

Currently using citric acid for my pH down...it is a weak acid, as you know.

And have potassium bicarbonate too

Need to get phosphorus I suppose.

Any other strong acid recs?

Thank you sir, means a lot. Yep, Happy 30th, I missed out, severly de-hydrated yesterdat and re- hab again, Oh well I can buy two cases of water now as I drank a 1/2 case yesterday . SS
