Got a nice picatinny scope mount for one of my .308 rifles.

Got the old rear mount off with just a little heat. But the front mount won’t budge even with flame applied for a minute.

Broke three Allen key style Torxs, two Torx bits, and bent three Torx T10 impact bits. (No impact gun used. YET!)

It seems it’s a known issue that they come over tightened. So now I’m afraid of shearing off the heads. At least they are good screws, no stripping so far.

I applied 3-1 penetrating oil from the bottom, inside the receiver, and left upside down over night. Still just bending the bits. View attachment 110229

Keeping my eye out for a rod I can heat red and appply to the top of the screw, let it transfer then try again. No gun smiths left in the city either. Mayor chased them out with new bylaws and rules a couple decades back.

😤
I would think the screw will expand heating it. That would make it harder to remove no?

Thermal expansion. Plus I think red permanent thread locker was used. Heat breaks the bond, thread locker, rust, any grit/grime that might be sticking it. But this is the worst I’ve ever come across.

The heat worked fine for the lower mount. 15-20 seconds then Torx driver. But the top won’t budge even after a minute. Worried I’ll screw up the finish/bluing if I push it with the mini torch.

Done it many times on old cars or any large metal equipment even hinges.

Yeah heat is almost always needed changing tie rod ends. I still love some pb blast for stubborn nuts/bolts as the first line of attack

Were you able to get it loose yet

I never had to heat a tie rod end. Portapower block and a couple raps from a small sledge hammer pop them right out.

Not familiar with it, I’ll look it up.

After waiting over night with the penetrating oil in the bottom of each hole I tried in the morning. Just bent the bit a little more.

By bending the bit I mean the Torx pattern is locked in place and the actual screwdriver is turning and bending the tip. Eventually shearing it right off. The screw is stronger so far and the heads not stripped.

So I’m letting it sit with the oil still while I chew on ideas. I fear snapping off the head.

I’ve done the hammer tap. Restraining myself, with difficulty. 🤣

I did a search after the torch didn’t work on the top one and I snapped a few tools. It’s a known issue that some of these rifles got over tightened screws.

I’ll get it but I’m not rushing it and breaking off the head.

I’ve never grown Rona tomatoes before. This is the seventh one to start to ripen and then gets this brown spot on the bottom. Cherry and starburst are doing fine. 🤔

G$ & AI say calcium deficiency. Cause can be a bunch of things so I’m looking into it.

It's been a while since i grew any roma varieties. Have canned in years and lean more towards the slicing varieties, now. I'd like to get back to canning some day. You just can't beat the soups and sauces made with nice canned tomatoes. I hate finding stuff like that.

I lost a bunch of tomatoes to blossom end rot last year. I'm not saying that's what you have going on, but it sure looks like a possible candidate. I stayed on top of the calcium this year with oyster shell and fish bone meals in the initial and follow up soil amendments. I also did a couple CalMag and mag sulphate waterings for good measure. No issues with end rot this year. There's always something, tho. My tomatoes mirror my cannabis. Both had some septoria to deal with. Humidity has to play a role, but I also need to get away from the sprinklers and get some drip watering set up. I also need to follow a regular schedule on preventative foliar sprays for disease and pests. I used a protein mix from Boogie Brew as a foliar spay, last year. It was one of those things you apply and everything just looks obviously healthier a day or two later. I need to go back and research the ingredients in that. I'd like to get it back in the mix.

Mornin all Yiz Menz! Off this morning for a Walmart run..I’d rather eat dirt!
Ppl say, have it delivered…oh bahahaha..it’s 46 miles one way..and this is to one of the old original Walmarts..it’s tiny compared to what most have. Wanna go? Roll up and hop in.,

I remember getting things ready for canning at aunts/uncles but mostly cutting, chopping and cleaning. Never canned anything. Wife has a work friend that does tomatoes once in a while. Her sister still lives on a farm so they do it yearly.

That’s the current theory I’m going by. Already watered in some ProCal this morning. Plucked all the bad ones and waiting to see.

First time I’ve ever had a problem with any fruit or vegetables. And it’s only the Roma this run.

Funny thing is I started foliar spraying a mix of 1 part lacto, 1 part milk and 2 parts water a week ago. Second spray was Tuesday. Has calcium but not enough soon enough.

I’m doing a JMS foliar tonight if it’s ready. Temps are lower this week so it might need a little longer. I’ll spray that at a 1:20 or 1:50 mix with water.

I never thought I’d need to add calcium to the vegetables. But I’m only using rain water, until yesterday, and the soil is a few years old with little to no regeneration/rejuvenation done. So I shouldn’t be surprised.

Next inside grow is my first soil mix. I’ve been practicing with the current GDP Autos. The veggies are only getting a bit of that as I see results and expand my testing.

Thanks for the feed back. Seems like I’m heading down the right path for this issue.

I’d rather poke myself in the eye with a bamboo stick. 🤣

But I wish you luck amongst the masses and hope you get everything you’re looking for in one trip. 🍀

I'm watch the JMS. You're gonna motivate me. I've been saying I want to learn and try some KNF, but all I've been all talk, other than a couple efforts last year.

I'm following your indoor soil, too. Won't be long and I'll either purchase the package to amend the BAS 3.0 that's currently in use or take a shot at collecting the appropriate ingredients individually. I've really been impressed with their 3.0 soil, so far. Consistency, water retention, everything about it seems great. Pricey, but if it remains effective after a recharge and reduces the amount of feeding needed throughout the grow, I may be done hunting soil. I did a sort of bastardized version of their recipe outdoors using the ingredients that I could find around here.

100% calcium issue from my old tomato experience

Just don’t follow my lead until you see the results. Stonemason is the expert, I’m doing what I can with what I have and experimenting with combinations of things. He’s often said when I ask him about things to try it and find out.

As an example he’s never used the JMS as a foliar, just a soil amendment before planting/transplanting. I’ve got a bunch of links he’s shown me I review when I want to try something.

Wife doesn’t want me to do the fish one or make a worm farm. Fish because of the skunks, foxes and raccoons. Worms… years after we got married she found out I kept fishing worms in the fridge. She was looking for leftovers and saw my takeout container. When she opened it she freaked. Apparently it’s gross to keep them in the refrigerator. 🤷‍♂️

She heard me ask my son if he would import a worm farm printer file for me. I heard from the other room…”That better not be for in the house!” 😏 Maybe 😝

Looks like blossom-end rot. I've got Roma's going now, so far so good but last year I grew Amish paste and I did get some Blossom-end rot

When I see the first yellow flowers I throw a tablespoon of calcium nitrate around the base of the plant and water it in, and about 2 weeks later I throw a tablespoon of magnesium (Epsom salts) around the base. I don't recall where I learned that but it seems to work for me

I’ve never added anything to the vegetable garden other than fertilizer. Some top feeding with worm castings and a bit of mykos this time but that was much later and to help break down the Gaia.

Either the soil the Roma are in is bad shape or the Roma needs more than anything else. I’m curious now and wonder if I run them again next year if they will do better with tums?

I add two tablespoons of epsom salts and drop a tums in the hole prior to planting. Never seem to have any problems.
Tums I’m familiar with. Never known anyone to use them on vegetables but it makes sense. Guessing the food colouring and sugar isn’t an issue then. I’ll keep that in mind for next year. Just the tomatoes?

I just think it’s strange that nothing else has ever had this issue. I can’t even compare to a past grow as this is our first time growing Roma.

Live and learn. 🤷‍♂️

I seem to notice more blossom end rot when there is a wet spring

some strains seem more susceptible than others, that's why I went with Roma instead of Amish paste this year because even though it was a bigger meaty tomato it didn't have much blossom end rot resistance

Nope not an issue. The Old fellow that taught me how he got such beautiful tomatoes years ago taught me that. As a matter of a fact, if he ran out of tums, he would add 2.5 tablespoons of salt and a tablespoon of sugar.
I actually believe a lot of tomato probs are these days in the genetics. Just like crappy weed.
I’m off to bake my GF a chocolate strawberry cake with cream cheese frosting. Party is at five..so I gotta get busy.

I have ProCal 2:0:0 but same thing. Used it yesterday morning. Lost two more tomatoes today so it’s going to take a bit to work.

Only the Roma are effected, weird.
I miss my garden..
Used to do all romas and then make a crazy amount of sauce for me and friends.

So cool to see a bunch of tomatoes cook down into sauce. Me, i love some red wine in my sauce like Cabernet or Merlot, on top of the normal stuff.

Used to fill to the brim a turkey pan with raw tomatoes that spread over two electric burners. In a few hours smells like an Italian joint!! 😂

Happy Friday everyone!!!

The Tums tip is a common practice around here. Probably everywhere. I've seen some pretty convincing videos debunking the practice. That position is based on the tiny amount of calcium in the Tums. Not saying I "know" differently, but that feels like pretty sound position. It could be that the plants are finding the calcium they need from other nutrients. That said, a ton of people swear by it.

I'll see if I can find a recent video by the world record tomato grower. This year I think he had three tomatoes that broke the world record he set last year. Like 13lb tomatoes or something crazy like that, lol. He has shares some pretty good tips he on his methods. How he builds his soil and amendments he uses.Bunch of interesting stuff. In one of his videos they show some other giant vegetables he has growing. He has a beautiful garden, but some special areas where he messes around trying to go big.

Ha! I found that dudes channel and was looking for the video with his general tomato growing process. Right up front I saw a video he has focussing on blossom end rot. I haven't watched this one, but I'll bet it has some good ino:

How's your week @CannaGranny ? Quiet in here

Here's a cute pic of a dog i took out for a few hours from the shelter this weekend in the new ride, don't know what happened to her, 1 year old, and sometimes skiddish, i had a bad feeling someone was abusive to her.

I hope Luna finds a very loving home! The cool thing is taking them out to lower their stress from being in the shelter, i think it worked, she was all smiles after a big walk and car ride, just needs a little groomingPXL_20250809_173157647.jpgPXL_20250809_161153374.jpg
