It is a little known fact that the fainting goat is the original 'scape goat'.
History has goat farmers keeping a fainting goat in with their prized herd to offset predation.
Instead of losing a prized goat the fainting goat would be the intended victim.
Originally called the escape goat shortened to scape goat.

I learned that when I looked them up a few years ago when I got some at the gun club. Nasty buggers. It’s their season now here. I check the dog often when out because of the rabbits on the yards.

I’ve been that close to black bears a few times. Only once on foot that I recall. In the Jeep with the top and doors off a couple of times. Once beside us in my Zodiac fishing boat.

Was only ever scared when walking and two babies were on one side of the path and we heard mom coming on the other side. Watching the cubs was funny and exciting, from a safe distance.

My wife and I on a walk in a park going to the beach a couple of years back came upon a black bear on the path, we were within 20 ft as he stood looking at us, I scrambled for the camera then walked into the woods before I had it out. I wasn't worried at the moment but it took some nerve to walk past the place in the woods he went into. As a kid we used to go to the dump and scare the bears away before we could dump so I kinda had this no fear of bears attitude growing up we could scare them away easily enough but standing 20ft away with my wife then having to continue past where he had stood there was some ass puckering going on. I'd lost my no fear it seems, funny how 60+ years changes things.
