I guess its time I created a post with all things pipes, I'm back making them again and I'll post my work here, comments and criticism please. I don't just want yes men going oh how wonderful, I can't see what I can't see and criticism is the only way I can get better. Saying that here's my 3 I made today, I'll post my method of carving on here with updated pics soon. I seem to have gone to this large round front.....its a fazCanary1.JPGcanary2.JPGcanary3.JPG I'm going through.:D
After posting the pics I can see some work still has to be done on these, I can see my score marks still visible. oops

Looks great.

What I meant to say was get that crap out of my sight! I'd rather carve a potato into a pipe than smoke out of one of those!

I have no carving experience, but I have whittled walking sticks. Looks better than one of my sticks.

They look great Pipe!!
I do see what you mean by you can see the score marks, but i only see it on the first one.
I have zero experience carving or whittling, so these are just amazing to me man.
Imo, imperfections make it all that much better.

What I'm getting at is my pipes to me don't look quite right, there's something my eyes can't see but when I look at them I see flaws but my brain can't process how to correct them. Sometimes another set of eyes with a different skill set can see where I went wrong and suggest a modification to my method. I 'm not looking for the Hey they look like crap try knitting advice, my wife has that covered. lol........

There's a tool called a French sander and I've seen them worked with on YT making pipes, they are just sanding pads off bench grinders but I've never seen anyone do it like I do so I'm on my own
. anyways on with the pipes

So far this session I've made these2bubinga1.JPG6bubinga.JPGBloodwoodL.JPGBriar 2.JPGBriar1.JPGbubinga2.JPGbubinga3.JPGlongstem canary2.JPGpipe6.JPGwalnut pipe.JPG

I would love to get one of those 2 pipes in the first pic🤩🤩
Absolutely gorgeous, would make a lovely hash pipe 🫠

My only criticism would be for the ones with the curved mouthpiece. Can you make them where the bowl still points straight up when in use? Bowl perpendicular to the mouthpiece?
Yes that's something I'd like to be able to do, I tried that with my first pipe this season and I ground through the stem because of a misaligned breath hole. My problem is my short drill press, when I bend the table to the angle I want there's no room for my piece and the drill bit to fit and If I don't get my aim right I drill or sand through to the side. I still have work to do. I may have to go with a smaller block my large ones won't fit.

You have my email, send me your address. I think we're going into Halifax tomorrow then over to Dartmouth where the hardwood shop is. I'm going to pick up more Bubinga and see what else they have, Cherry, Apple, Birdseye maple or what ever is hard, non toxic and pretty. I expect my Olive wood here this week too but along with the wood I need mouth pieces and its starting to get expensive with shipping charges.

Birdseye sounds perfect for this. Better than cocobolo.

PC, where do you source your wood stock for making your pipes?

I ask because I have a source (I own it) for 22 board feet of Goncalo Alves (Tigerwood).

It's 2" stock, surfaced to about 1 - 5/8". It was surfaced using an industrial sized sander (it's flat as glass).
It has an ogee around the perimeter on top and round over on the perimeter bottom.
Otherwise, it's 11 square feet of thick awesome looking wood, with one or two worm holes in it (common for this wood).

It's been a tabletop (38" x 42") since 1977, been in storage since about 2000.

Do people buy second hand rare hardwoods? I probably ought to sell it since I just seem to keep moving it around!

We have 2 exotic hardwood shops here, I was at both today looking for pretty hardwoods with a nice grain. The first shop was a wash they didn't have anything in the size I need but the second shop, Atlantic Hardwoods had most of what I was looking for. They have a hobby craft section with wood blocks of various sizes. I bought a 2x2x18" block of Birdseye Maple, a 2x4x8 Block of Bubinga, a 2x2x18" Block of Cherry and a 2x2x18" block of Canary wood $70 Cdn taxes in.

Tiger wood is a pretty wood and is in my hardness range of woods I can work with it comes in at 9.2 and I'm good up to 12 on the Janka hardness scale. I saw some today but I selected something else this time, Next week or 2 I'll pick up a piece to work with

I've made a few pipes this week but only 1 I like, this Birdseye maple started off a bit longer but I kept screwing up the short piece but its kinda cute anyways.

My vegging girls are growing well since I transplant and fed them.

I fed 2/2/2/1ml/gallon. Micro/Grow/Bloom/Flurolicious Plus. It'll be another week - 10 days before I put them in my Auto Pots in my 5x5 and I'll give them 2 weeks to adjust to mylong bird.JPGOct29 veg.JPGworktable.JPG led lights then flip....That's the plan anyways

Not a huge fan of Gandolf pipes but that looks cool. (They look good but I don’t think they look good with me. 😝)

Nice shop, great plants, beautiful work. 👍

I'm out of stems, I stole that from another pipe just for the pic. I've ordered more but who knows when they'll show up...and they are pricey when buying a bunch. I'm looking at getting a Mini wood lathe to make my own stems and mouth pieces, I'm thinking Black Friday sales might be a good time. Right now what I'm looking at is about $300....+ $150 tools.......if I can get what I need for $400 taxes in I'll be good to go

Stems sound scary. Thin, hollow, and easy to snap. Cracks with the grain or snap off against it. 😱

I would like to make them out of acrylic, I just need to find a good source. Acetal or Derlin are similar plastics that can be used and Amzon has some 1"x1"x12" Rods 2 for $20 but I'd like to find it locally. I'm sure I could turn the hard woods into stems as well but they'd all be straight pipes with the plastics I should be able to bend them some with a heat gun to give me different shapes

I ordered a cheap wood lathe and I mean cheap 1699485713009.png

If it will let me turn acrylic and wood mouth pieces I'll be happy...or if it teaches me what I need to turn pipe stems and what I don't it's a good deal.

I also cut my G3000 in half to use lengthways at the end of my 2 - SE3000's

My 5 week old girls topped and vegged girls, 2 Green Crack, 2 Train wreck, 2 Grunts & 1 Chocolate Mimosa all healthy and doing well. I'll be putting 6 of them in Auto Pots and 1 I'll keep vegging while the rest flower

For real? 1/8th scale? 🤣
I'm not sure, I have the $6.50 lathe coming and if it even works I might get those other items above....for $20 wtf I've wasted more than that at the Casino in minutes playing slots or Blackjack, the little belt sander could be useful, I'd love a little table saw for small stuff, my big one chews up too much wood1699543659342.png1699543706211.png

Lathe for $10 tax in. I’m interested. I keep thinking it’s a desktop model.

Can’t wait to see what you get!🤞🍀

I missed it. Why did you cut your light in half?
