Signs of a good grower are: ability to R&D or "watch" his grow. Does he or she post problems concerning their grow? These and more traits one can notice about a grower and what they are able to do in horticulture settings. SSgrower

I don't have a whole lot of growing knowledge by I could absolutely help with the very basics of Hydro. I'm here to learn to read my plant when things come up. So far I've been lucky to not have many issues or deficiencies, but that means I haven't learned much as far as diagnostics.

My only REAL advice... Hydro is easy. Try it out.

Like, homeaid soil mixture & watering. I took another look at my latest airpots -- holes aren't done correctly (i.e. not even C- for effort). No wonder why I never noticed no dirt sticking out of the holes, so I was duped. Index of expertise/area within the site. Problem & X Solutions. Your own buddy resident to feign interest in mundane issues responds directly to questions. Can you cue Bill Withers singing Lean on me?20240402_192320.jpg

sometimes learning from a newer grower is easier for me. they tend to remember the beginning pains and details a seasoned vet may space or not even remember having to deal with because it's been so long.

i think we learn from each other no matter what the experience level is. i know i have!

Hydro may be easy, but it's less forgiving........one screw up, and the crop could be gone. I've lost entire crops when the pumps failed with the lights on, and the plants were crispy critters by the time I got there in the morning. That's when I switched to Promix, and never regretted it one bit.

I could see that. I haven't been doing this very long so problems are right over the horizon, I'm sure.

And I wasn't at all saying it's better than one or the other. I was mostly speaking to the fact that a lot of people are weary to try Hydro, thinking it's too difficult. Aside from the initial startup cost, it's been a walk in the park for me. I've kept it pretty basic with my nute lineup though.

my major fear with me ever trying full hydro would be my frequent power outages, i sometimes lose power once or twice a month mostly just for a few seconds to a couple minutes at most but sometimes there are hour long or more outages. if i'm home i usually start my generator up after about 30 minutes of outage depending on the temp and time of year sometimes even sooner. my generator is large and runs my entire house including my grow lights and and stuff so i have that going for me, but is that even enough?

would i be able to grow hydro with those conditions or is it more risk than reward?

I don't think a 30 minute loss of bubbles and circulation will be that detrimental to a grow. The main issue with outages would be your air pumps siphoning out the water, but if the pump is above water level, that won't happen. A short loss of water circulation won't hurt a bit if you consider some folks don't even recirculate their water and just run a straight DWC. I did have to re-prime my water pump once after an outage but we were down for an hour and my pump is above the res. After that long of a period, it eventually drained itself back into the res.

I'd be just as, or more, concerned with a loss of airflow in the tent or grow area for a sustained period of time.

All that being said... you're killing it with your grows and, unless you're itching for a change, I'd stick to the usual. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Dude, you can run an aero-cloner. After that, everything hydro is gravy:alien:

Been running hydro well over a decade. Never had a power outage that was hurtful to the hydro part of the grow. Plenty of times where I’d lose control of a smart switch or lighting reset to 18 from 12 or something like that. Basically the same issues you have in soil based on your setup.

Hydro is good for yield. I also find it much easier to automate. Soil is better for pheno hunts and flexibility of moving things around. Just depends on your goals.

If you are running so close to the ragged edge that a pump going off for 6 hours ruins your grow you are doing something wrong. In my current RDWC grow I had O2 sats in the 3ml range for a week due to equipment failure and they have fully recovered and are monsters.

Also remember if the power goes off so do the lights so the plant slows down and respiration will not be sucking the res dry or consuming all the free O2 in the res.

If yield is your goal don’t let power outages discourage you from hydro. Done right it will outperform all other methods.

My gals are singing this morning, I feed em some coco a&b only this morning and all of are drippin or trippin! little one's trippin on the good juicee! Cheers see I don't Ph or run-off test, rainwater with just a&b , if I use Rooted leaf cal/mag fuel and Silica skin I use 1 pipette of Ph down and run it! Lazy guy me.

12 yrs rdwc

Its so easy, even a caveman could do it.

First attempt was with a diy system i bought in Arizona from a kid on cl. My first experience with uniseals. Harvested one plant of the 4 we started.

Next year bought a chiller and a store bought current culture 4 site using bulkheads and never looked back

Agreed, plant may look great but, hows the smell, taste, high? I began to sample Jim Beam, Heaven Hill, GDP, Buffalo Trace all distillery's and taste different, smell different. I am trying to learn cannabis like this too. SS

I wouldn't describe myself as a good grower I'm not particularly knowledgeable with science or biological stuff.
That said ive got lots of hands on experience keeping a grow running perpetually namely with coco dtw.
