Zen’s Spring 2026 Grow

Hey, plants look great, whats the idea behind 13/11 ....14/10 in flower? Are you using the far red to obtain the Emerson effect? I flowered a crop at 11/13...won't do that again, smaller fluffier buds. I thought to get the Emerson effect we need to weekly increase the light on hours. like 12.5/11.5 - 13/11 - 13.5/10.5 -14/10 as we dim our lights to get the same DLI / day.........So at 14/10 we are around 60% light intensity ??????? does that sound right to you?

I remember an old bugbee video where he said to just go 12/12 all the way to the end and even advocates for days of light vs days of darkness to finish off plants, but I am also not here to tell anyone how to run their lights!

For a lot of us its just play, the same ole same ole gets boring. 12/12 is a safe proven method but we need to reinvent the wheel sometimes. I've gone 18/6 the last week -10 days on a few occasions with 60% light intensity to give them a boost until they stop sucking up water at the gallon + a day they go through.....with far reds on for 10 min at lights out, its said the reds are supposed to put them to sleep faster.

Morning @Pipecarver

This is just a small experiment to see if extending the light period in a poor copy of nature will help with bud development since I need to turn the power down. At week 5-6 I’ll head back to 12/12 slowly.

Red lights have been left off since flip.

Thanks. I don’t do off for more than 12hrs. I don’t do on more than 18hrs unless it’s a low light over clones rooting.

This is just an attempt to compensate for lower power lights over a longer period.

I have the bad and repeated habit of letting the plants get too tall even after topping a few times. Then I do LST and/or HST and end up with bushes that are too big for the tent. I try to fix any remaining issues after stretch with trimming and LST.

I think it’s rooted in greed. I just can’t chop branches that look like they will do well. Lol

It usually starts with a deficiency in early veg and by the time I’ve fixed it they have gotten larger than I can manage easily at flip. It’s also why I only have two plants in each section.

Since last year I switch from liquid nutes to solids based on Gaia Green. Testing in pots outside was great. Insides been more difficult. This grow I had to use liquid CalMag to fix an issue. I’ll get it. Outdoor is just easier.

Looking forward to watching what you do as you’ve been doing this longer with most of the same ingredients. 👊

I’m always tweaking something. Small changes all the time, big ones occasionally.

So far nothing has ruined a crop but I’ve had poor results from mucking with things.

One day it will all come together.

Last night was top dress prep and a little trimming. I applied the top dress just before lights out and will water it in at lights on tonight. (I don’t like to water before lights out.)

Top Dress Mix: 3 gallon / 7 gallon

Worm Castings - 1/2 cup / 1 cup
Azomite - 1 tbsp / 2 tbsp
Gypsum - 1 tbsp / 2 tbsp
Epsom - 1/2 tsp / 1 tsp
4:4:4 - 1.5 tbsp / 3 tbsp
2:8:4 - 1.5 tbsp / 3 tbsp

I may add 14ml Sensi Cal Mag Extra 4:0:0 to the 7.5 litres water so no deficiencies return. One GG#4 seems to be off still.

The rest of the week will be trimming a bit here/there to open things up. Remove any suckers. And hopefully shape things better for good bud development.

Enjoy the last of April, here’s to a dryer May. 🍻

Sounds like you are on the right track Zen! 🧙‍♂️ Growing indoors in a tent and getting stretchy, leggy plants is probably one of the most annoying things. I would much prefer to have a short fat plant any time if I could choose. I always stress out a bit when running new strains for that reason, you just never know what they want to do. I mentally plan for them to triple in height over flower and still find myself being caught off guard lol. And I appreciate your kind words/confidence, however after being out of the game for so long I feel like I am going to be very, very rusty!

That's a pretty slick tent too! 4x4 that's split off in to 4x2 sections? Lookin' very clean 💪

100% agree. Maybe next run I’ll get it right. Lol

On the bright side I do tend to fill the tent with the one or two plants that gives me a nice volume.

I had my strain down and could pretty much do what I wanted with good end results but after winning new seeds it was like starting over. Then switching from liquid to dry nutrients was another learning curve I’m not quite on top of yet.

But it keeps things interesting. 🤔

And I appreciate your kind words/confidence, however after being out of the game for so long I feel like I am going to be very, very rusty!
I’m sure it will all come back quickly. Then I can start stealing ideas from ya. 😝

Thank you. Took a few years to get things right and make the room/hallway flow right and functional.

It’s two 3x4 three in one tents. I modified the 1x3 sections on both tents to make a clone/seedling section and then two veg/flower sections. It’s not perfect but helps a lot especially if I’m doing perpetual.

If it wasn’t also a hallway life would be so much easier but you do what you can with what you have. 🤷‍♂️

Rain, rain and then some rain.

Took advantage of a break in the rain yesterday to start laying out the cardboard for the new vegetable beds. I’ll need about 3x the amount to finish it off. Rain started again at this point.IMG_9813.jpeg

Seeds have been selected to start. Along with the germinators.IMG_9804.jpegIMG_9805.jpeg

I also found we forgot about a bag of onions. Going to see if I can get a few to spread or at least swell up and scallions from the rest.IMG_9799.jpegIMG_9801.jpegIMG_9814.jpeg

High of only 10* today and more rain all week. I plan to get the rest of the cardboard and lay it down by the weekend. I want it soaked before I put soil on top.

Lots to do…

A high of 10c? balmy, basking in double digits while we sit here at 4c. We've had 3 nice days in a row where we got to 10 -11 C not today...lol....Its a bit early in the season to start looking at planting veggies. June is when I start thinking about something in a few large planters, Cucumbers, Tomato's maybe some Beans but just some play for my wife. Without a green house there,s not enough good weather to count on anything here. Although last year we could have had a nice garden, we actually had a nice summer and it was so nice the Premier illegally ( so they just ruled) shut down the woods so we couldn't go into them. Would have been the year for a garden though

Man I am struggling with the non-weed seeds! For the first time this year I figured I would try to start some Peppers, Strawberries, Lettuce, Cucumbers and Beans indoors before the "nice" weather hits. Excuse my French but what a shit show! The beans shot up out of the soil after 2 days and haven't stopped growing since, now I know why jack uses a beanstalk to get to the clouds in the sky. The lettuce took a bit longer but has started to show, and everything else is still hiding under the dirt. Makes growing cannabis look easy.

Great, just great. Now look what you did. Temps are dropping to single digits and freezing over night for the next three days. 🤦

I’ll start indoors the last week of April with the expectation that they will go outside after Victoria Day long weekend.

I’ve planted a week or two earlier on some years but get hit with frost once in a while. But as you say it’s hard to get a full season to grow some times.

I remember reading your thread about that. Not the brightest people in charge it seems.

You need any vegetable seeds? I’m mostly doing different tomatoes, cucumbers and melons this year. Last year was so dry our sugar baby watermelons were no bigger than a 5 pin bowling ball.

It’ll come back to you. Out door is easy if the weather cooperates.

I haven’t done any leafy plants yet. Beans were okay last year but didn’t do as well as I’d hoped. Tomatoes, cucumber and peppers are pretty easy and we use them the most.

If I can grow vegetables with my half assed attempts I’m certain you’ll be up to your neck in veggies soon enough. 👊

i gotta say the Zen seeds are popping along awesome!!!!!

Your ahead of me. I had a bunch of seeds pop the last two days I just put in soil. Sugar baby watermelon and cucumber.

I’ve found tomatoes and pepper plants don’t do well if more than one are growing in the same pot. I tried it again last year and it cost me a lot of fruit. Peppers really suffered from it. Plus the droughts.

I put my seeds one per nursery pot now.

I’m really glad they are working for you. Can’t wait to see how it goes. 👊

It may be a crappy rainy month but it beats snow.

Only a couple days before the weekend, hang in there people. 👊

Way back some 25 years ago I built a green house out back from plywood, 1x1's, screws and plastic. It lasted about 3 years before nature took it back, The wood rotted, the plastic sheets disintegrated and it fell apart. I had plywood planter boxes, with raised beds in it. First year was excellent, grew lots of veggies & even corn stalks & some Sunflowers busted out the top , I had to modify. By the 3rd year slugs got into the boxes and the wood 1x1's were rotted through in sections so I had a large fire in the back yard and even the plastic went up in smoke.

I know my wife would like another one but I'm not making one, Maybe buy one thats made of metal & glass but they are too expensive for good ones and the cheap shit can't take our weather so a few plastic tubs will have to do.

I'm diggin the little 3D printed germination chambers! Very cool. I think next year I will need to properly germinate some seeds outside of soil instead of just tossing veggie seeds into dirt and playing the waiting game. I also like those little seedling pots - I am assuming that the roots will grow through the sides of these? Do you just plop the whole plug into a bigger pot when you go to transplant?

I got into growing because my wife wanted me to be busy, as it turns out. It’s always been a chore for me. Not really enjoyable, just something that had to be done.

She told me she wanted to learn how to grow our own vegetables and asked for my help. I gave her options, she chose, and I made the crate garden. Then she wanted me to look after it. 😳

I need to make a base or frame if only to lock in the soil. Haven’t decided what I’ll do yet. We have some free lumber but only the 4x4 with a channel in the middle. It’s not from skids but something like that.

Just got back from pool. Played 11-1:30. 😊

I wonder if half a plastic barrel would be any good? 🤔

Value village have these large 20 gal tubs with handles on them under $10 used, a few holes in the bottom and my old soil they do okay for a few handfuls of Peas, a few cucumbers, maybe peppers, tomato's, beans 1777659949768.png

I have trouble between December and April with seeds. G$ teased me with one a while back. I liked the idea and found a free printable one. I put it on top of the gas hot water tank and it works great. After April the VGs work for me again and I switch to them.

Only thing that hasn’t worked so far is tomato seeds. (Peppers would probably have the same issue.)

I think next year I will need to properly germinate some seeds outside of soil instead of just tossing veggie seeds into dirt and playing the waiting game. I also like those little seedling pots - I am assuming that the roots will grow through the sides of these?
Bandit got some bigger ones to grow in. I liked the idea and found some to use for a one gallon grow. Did well. So I grabbed some for seedlings and the vegetables this year. Only complaint is they are no more biodegradable than jiffy pucks. They say they are but not if left in the ground. If the suns on them for months they do start to rot above ground.

I now remove the bag/pot for weed and vegetables but leave them on when planting flowers or plants that will be removed after winter. Like sunflowers.

Do you just plop the whole plug into a bigger pot when you go to transplant?

When Lowe’s left Canada Rona moved a block to their old store. Panda Mart took over the old Rona store. They are like the worlds biggest dollar store. I’m hoping I can find some cheaper stuff there this year.

I don’t want to be at ground level because of my back but I’ll go that route if I have to until I find what I want.

Weathers still up/down but outside humidity has improved the last week a bit. Yesterday’s rain tried to be snow for a while in the morning but it didn’t last.

Raised the two largest lights to the top of the tents. The small section I’m trying to find things to attach to the lights that won’t melt or fail. I’ve decided on these. IMG_9896.jpeg

Got my son to order a bunch as they are handy and can join together for longer lengths. IMG_9898.jpeg

These are the lights that still need to be raised. GM & GGB#4IMG_9891.jpegIMG_9892.jpeg

That’s as high as the lights go. IDK why but the 3x3s had very little burn while the 1x3 had a lot? I’m guessing it had to do with the environment. Just a small fan and passive vents on the 1x3. I leave the door fully open until lights out.

Vegetable garden

Trying an old idea with cardboard boxes. I haven’t done this since my teens. (I’ve lined a hole or pot with news print or thin cardboard like the ones that come with dress shirts but nothing this large in decades.)

The idea is the lack of light kills the growth under the cardboard, weeds and all. It also attracts worms that like to eat the cardboard or newspaper. Just use the cleanest ones you can with no coatings, stickers or tape, and as little ink as possible. Then wet them down and cover with soil. I’ll be adding a solid boarder once I decide what to use. In the meantime I want the rain to wash over things and help breakdown the boxes. I won’t be planting anything until the EOM.IMG_9884.jpeg

Here’s the current seedlings growing inside until then. Cauliflower, Red Onion, Sugar Baby Watermelon, and Pickling Cucumber.IMG_9875.jpegIMG_9883.jpegIMG_9882.jpegIMG_9881.jpeg
Almost all the watermelon and cucumber have broken the top soil.

That’s about it for now. Just need to raise the last light(s) and a bit more trimming for airflow and remove any remaining suckers.

Just before lights out.IMG_9885.jpegIMG_9886.jpeg

Beefsteak seeds didn’t do so well. All the others popped in a day or two.
IMG_9903.jpegIMG_9904.jpeg

It’s almost time to switch to the VG so maybe I’ll try that next. We keep going from low single digits to mid double digit temperatures. For today only we’ll be at 22*. 😳

Today I plant to get four beefsteak planted in soil nursery bags.

All the watermelon came up! But we have probably lost a cucumber. It was a runt with just root and the two leaves, no stem. It’s looking pale and sickly.IMG_9946.jpegIMG_9947.jpeg

Green grass, a garden growing and wild life in your yard, its only May! you're so lucky to live in such a tropical environment. Ah yes I remember sun and warm weather in May but I DIDN"T LIVE HERE...oops a small slip. ..lol......We are supposed to get up to 21C today and yesterday was nice as well. 2 days in a row and its only May, they'll be locking down the woods soon if we get too many days of sun in a row. .....I need coffee, I got a bad attitude this AM.

It was 22* yesterday for a few seconds but stayed above 15* most of the day. Usually it’s grey sky like today…no rain…yet.

Today is going to be cooler but still better than the last two or three weeks. Then back lower temps. I think 10* for the rest of the week.

But humidity is still a daily battle. I’m dumping the dehumidifier twice a day. It uses the over flow jug at least once a day. Most rain in April ever this year.

The wildlife you can have. I like and appreciate them but not inside the fence. They can stay until they become a problem. Wife says they see lots of them on the way to work at 5:30am. She saw four on the road this morning. Last month she was followed by two coyotes walking down the road. And this is in the city suburbs not beside farm land.

Sounds like you’re getting our weather a day later.

That lockdown was the stupidest thing. What exactly was it to protect?

.....I need coffee, I got a bad attitude this AM.
That was my yesterday. Made coffee before attempting anything.

Bad attitude and extremely tired seems to be the norm these days. You, me, family, friends… list goes on.

You got a sweet harvest coming and a shiny new toy to dry it up quickly for ya. That will make you happy soon. At $1400 it would be my year’s allowance in one shot. 🤣

I’m jelly but want to hear if it’s up to snuff for you. Does it dry/cure/store like it says? Can’t wait to find out.

That was my yesterday. Made coffee before attempting anything.

Bad attitude and extremely tired seems to be the norm these days. You, me, family, friends… list goes on.

You got a sweet harvest coming and a shiny new toy to dry it up quickly for ya. That will make you happy soon. At $1400 it would be my year’s allowance in one shot. 🤣

I’m jelly but want to hear if it’s up to snuff for you. Does it dry/cure/store like it says? Can’t wait to find out.
I've sent them 2 threatening emails already that if I don't get confirmation soon I'll cancel the order. I received one just a few minutes ago and they called it a Pre Order...????? say fkn what???? a Pre order? says shipping should be ready by the end of May...sigh....I was hoping for this harvest. If it doesn't show up until June my Crop will be done already. When I googled about it before I ordered they said 5-10 business days...oh well not much I can do about it. Its on its way but when is another story.

Pre-orders in Canada before Apr. 15th 2026 will be shipped by the end of April; orders since Apr. 15th, 2026 are expected to begin shipping in May 2026.

It’s been raining since yesterday afternoon. Not hard but constantly.

I need more wood to finish the garden boxes. One and three quarters are done.IMG_9963.jpeg

So this left me changing plans last night. I started the Teddy Bear Sunflowers. Eight in the round germinator and eight in the VG. I hope they all pop as I have two to give away and the rest are for the yard.79972562660__25DBE438-BBB3-4A30-B062-13C05F3B4CC6.jpeg

The new SS key chain cables are coming on the weekend so I’ll finish raising the 1x3 lights then. The other two lights in the 3x3s are as high as they can go now.

The buds are starting to take off. Especially on the GM & GGB#4. Humidity is going to be a worry even with the dehumidifier on 24/7. I’ll need to remove more leaves and small branches to bring it down this weekend. IIRC week four after flip starts Monday.

Gas is $1.96 ATM here. That’s per litre not gallon. Not good.

My son got a pool game so we can practice at home. It actually does help with judging angles and maybe cue ball spin placement. 🤣IMG_9959.jpeg

We might play tonight, we’ll see how the day goes.

Wow your grass is green and its going to need a mowing soon. Ours won't need its 1st mow until mid June. My lawn tractor won't keep a battery charged and kills them after sitting too long so I bought a battery jump starter off Amazon after watching some reviews. A Wolfbox, 4000A.. It started my cold battery with no problems once I figured how to use it right. 1st try showed a low warning, after a flip through the manual that meant I needed the boost function activated. That did the job, now at least I can start it without needing the car to jump start.

I used to play pool online somewhere but it was a pretty simple game, might have been on Yahoo back around 2000. Graphics have taken a jump since then. It looks like it could be a fun game.

We still get the occasional frost or flurries in May but depending on the year things are either growing right at the start of May or by the end of it.

A younger guy I road with made a jump starter and battery tender like that. He was trying to sell them around 2010. That made here or from China?

My bikes battery used to fail over winter even with a battery charger. It was/is the dry type. The old bikes battery was wet and never died.

Games have come a long way since they started. To me the game just makes me practice angles, where to strike the ball, and where to apply spin for the results I want. It’s not the same as playing in any other way as you’re removed from playing. Your grip, stance, force and follow through aren’t part of the game. It’s fun and keeps you thinking though.

Three weeks of mostly rain have really kicked off the growing season here. I can let grass grow and leave it a bit. Makes it lush and healthy. Bees and small wildlife enjoy it. But my wife hates an unruly lawn. I have to stop her from cutting the grass often as it will damage things especially in an extended heatwave.

We’ve had rain all week again, including this morning. It’s enough to make everything wet but no downpours. (Maybe when we’re sleeping as it’s often over night.)

20260508: GG#4 JW & SB#22

Where to start. I guess the 1x3 section has surprised me. I’ve grown a few plants in flower there but I tend to leave them thin and with few branches. This time the GM and GGB#4 were left bushy. It’s a tight fit but I have high hopes. We’ve also noticed the sweet fruity smells that I’m assuming are coming from the GGB#4 for the last week or two. We thought it was from my sons cart vape at first but we were mistaken.

The key chain cables arrived last night so I raised the last lights a few inches.IMG_9968.jpeg

The GG#4 seems to be fussy compared to the Sherbanger. In both tents it’s the weaker of the two plants but in one it’s still got some discoloured leaves. Doesn’t matter what size pot but it did do better under the quantum board by the looks of it.

All plants show the signs of a little burning from the lights but the SB#22 seems to love it now. It’s all green and lush up top. While the GG#4 has the dark edges on the leaves.

You’ll notice the GG#4 looks better here, not as obvious leaf burns.

Still dumping the dehumidifier reservoir twice a day with the backup jug getting partially filled once. So far it’s been a good purchase.

A few hours after lights on.
IMG_9976.jpeg

On a side note: Hydro has been sending surges the last two weeks that cycle power. Like a one second loss of power. It’s been annoying as things like the TV, stove, microwave all need the clocks reset. But worse is the Woohoo fans I’m using in the tents. They don’t come back on so I have to open the tent a bit in the dark and stick my hand in with the remote and turn it on again and then make it oscillate. PITA

So… things are okay. Maybe a bit more trimming for air and any last dead end branch removal.

By the end of the weekend the last mid grow dry nutrients will be added and then we’ll be on to the flower nutrients. Cal Mag is still being added with each watering at 2ml per litre. Each pot is getting about 6 litres a week.

I’ll update the vegetable garden stuff in a separate post. Have a great day. 👊

we get those really weird power dips here to Zen.. sometimes there will be multiple ones really fast one right after the other.. i swear they hate every power supply i own!!! i'd rather have a regular blackout!!

glad to hear those loop cable worked for ya!! i assume you tugged on one really hard to make sure they were strong?

Not sure why it’s happening now but once it’s A/C season it’s a daily event.

It’s gotten to the point I don’t bother setting the microwave clocks anymore.

Yes, I linked about thirty of them, three to a loop. I tested a couple by pulling at that point, but not all of them. Each one’s supposed to hold 25lbs. It’s two small lights, hardly any weight.IMG_9993.jpeg

Look what popped up mid afternoon today.IMG_0001.jpeg
