Whats up everyone. Im looking at getting a rosin press, but not sure which Ton unit would be best. Im pressing for personal use, but want a really good unit without spending a fortune. The Dabpress gear looks quality and reasonable. Should I go with a 6 Ton or 12 Ton?

I run the dab press caged gear in a 12 ton harbor freight press I bought used- got less than 300 in the whole rig . I do wish I had a pressure gage in-line somewhere , but I tend to doubt I need 12 tons ? I’ve never maxed it out prolly not even close , pressing is an art in my opinion ? I feel I can produce better product with my manual press than any of my growmies who have the automatic, air, bush a button presses ( nugsmasher ect.;) I like the control I have with the manual dab press looks like price went up a bit https://www.amazon.com/Industrial-C...778013339&psc=1&ref=&adgrpid=78794907560&th=1

Think you’ll love either one once you get ur process down ! I like lower temp presses lower yield but better quality imo - I also keep the pucks and quick wash ‘‘em with ever clear to get anything left .

I’ve got the push button style connected to a compressor. It works. I don’t feel like I have it mastered tho. Mosh gets better results than me.

Seems to me to be highly dependent on the flower you press.

Plate size and dual heating plates with accurate heat display are more important than tonnage IMO. 6 tons is more than enough but really there's a combo of factors at play.
Feel is most important. Very ez to over do it and blow the paper or bag with anything over 6 tons so there's a nuance to each and every press and how much pressure to apply. It's very rarely cookie cutter, one way fits all so I like hydraulic over pneumatic and t-shirt press spring loaded clam shell design. Twister style is ok and I have one but it needs to be bolted down to a very sturdy surface where as my hydraulic is free standing. I also broke the head off my twister wrenching down too hard so I had to rebuild the drive shaft on it.

For personal size I'd look for at least a 4"x4" dual heat plate, digital display, and hydraulic operation.

Equally important are the bags and paper. Lots of cheap garbage to avoid but here's some of the best $$ can buy without a huge markup

You'll also need wax tools + glass and or silicone jars

I use the same paper, ive only ever used dab press bags because they are already turned inside out and have only blown out 1 of their bags.

@Bandit420 , are press club bags turned inside out?

Yeah they're turned out...Here's the description from PC

"The Press Club is focused on making the highest-quality rosin tea extraction filters on the market at an affordable price. We only use premium nylon that is 100% food-grade and dye-free because we understand the importance of making contaminant free rosin. Every bag is backed by The Press Club Zero Blowout Guarantee so we'll replace any bag that doesn't hold up. All our bags have been extensively tested to prevent blowouts with any amount of heat or pressure. All bags are pre-flipped inside-out so they're ready when you receive them."

However there's a little trick to using them. The bottom corners need to be pushed in to create a kind of gusset bottom. This will help keep it standing up while loading the press and help reduce and almost eliminate blowing the bag.

This is a 2"x4" bag so after making the gusset I load up to about 1" from the top then fold the top corners over. I pack it full and firm but not hard packed. A funnel can help load and tamp the load down too

Then squeeze it into the press so it stands by itself and is kinda locked in then give it the business.
I run temps anywhere from 165-220 and keep the pressure on anywhere from 3-5 minutes

21g in 14g bag.
Folded /gusset corners filled to top enough to fold without cutting.
All the other math is there and @Bandit hit.
4X6 plates with synchronized heat for me please.

Those both look so good! Those nugsmasher units are Fn pricey.
They are, but they are diamond to a married man.
They give you like 80% trade in value if you upgrade.
Just look for 4x6 plates whatever brand you go with.
It is a messy process one only learns to adapt to.
Bigger plate mean more parchment and less mess.

squishin like a big dawg!!!!

7 grams at 207*F with 15 tons of pressure...

a couple blowouts... always happens with anything over 11 tons, and that's with blowout proof tough made bags.

DSCN1125.JPG

who really cares about blowouts and a little contamination when ya get this.....

overkill is underrated

:D

if I’m doing small amounts I won’t even use a bag , figure I’m smokin weed anyways.

The one thing I wish I had well two things one is a pressure gage not that I need it but just curious - and the other is BIGGER plates

i can't press more than 3 grams at a time without a bag. i suffer from small plate syndrome. :( i've always said when my heaters/controllers break i will buy bigger ones and everything else on the press including press' themselves have broken over the years but the plates keep on kickin! haha

i'd like to upgrade to 4x7 or bigger one day.

bigger plates seems to be the most popular requirement.

I notice you guys are pressing flower. Have you tried to press dry sift or bubble hash? Just wondering if you have and didn’t see enough difference in the end product to make a difference?

They discontinued the OG which is the model I have. It was $700 and kind of the mid level press between the mini and the larger model like what Steamroller has.
I see them come up on ebay sometimes for a decent price but looking around at Duly and others I'm not sure what I'd buy today.
Too many have rectangle plates and I prefer square so I'd go as big as possible but probably still use it in a square configuration. So for like a 5"x7", I'd use it like it was a 5"x5".
Rectangular plates should probably use a prepress instead of bags just in order to fully load it each run and a prepress does work great. Clamp it down in a vise worked best for me when I was using mine. The more it was like a solid brick the better the extraction.
2 bags at one time could also work on a rectangular plate.

I've done both but prefer flower for the full body flavor and yields.
I have both a dry sift tumbler and trays and it takes a lot of kief to load a bag. The return is not that great and TBH, I really don't see much difference between a 20 micron kief run vs a 90 micron flower run in regards to potency but the flower run will have more flavor and more of an entourage effect with the terps still being in there.
The flower will have more wax though making it messier to work with.

It is amazing how we can bend and break steel squishing flowers :ROFLMAO:

Its a numbers thing for me and personal preference (brick hash)
Avg pressing flwr approx 15%
Avg pressing kif approx 70% maybe

When i tumble flowers to collect kif. A 10 min tumble of a 300 gm sample will yield on on avg 15%

15 min tumble on the left, 40 min on right

Great info bandit. Thank you!

another plus for not using a bag, it's much easier to use the chips for edibles. when using the bags it's impossible to get all of it separated.

Does the OG have a pressure gauge?
