Kief tumbler

As cold as you can get everything. We use the sunroom in winter.

My tumbler is supposed to do 500 grams at a time. I have always done 300 gms at a time. I add the 8 quarters to the load. Looking now to use solid nylon balls this go. Quarters are hard to find back from the spent material.

300 gms in zip lock frose. Crack open the baggie a bit, crunch by hand to break up nugs and dump in tumbler

Aged flower is what i use. (Last years crop) could age the kif too im thinking. But what Frenchy says above maybe press it and let it age in the brick and consume the plant material???

Different tumble times fo 300 gms sample 40 min tumble return 126 gm etc

I think pressing in my press 80 gms at a time thinner is better and time to cure

I look at a 15 % return is a good number for squishing and hash. Here's 2 tumbles of 300 gms return is 15%. I then do qwiso and am surprised

Here's what mine looks like going into the tumbler

@smoke do you clean the kief at all using static or anything? Or just press what comes out of the tumbler?

A neat method I saw in a video from I think Morocco, was they keep the screened kief really cold, and then in from of a window they slowly pour it out of a bowl onto the floor, the trichomes are heavier and fall straight down while the stems and plant matter blow a foot or so away. Also saw a technique using nitrile gloves that seems fairly simple.

I love watching these videos of hash production from traditional regions, I think this is Afghanistan. Amazing to see the sheer volume of plant material they work with, but also the different steps they take to get the resin clean. The final cleaning step here they use 2 large steel blades swept through the kief repeatedly to collect pure trichomes.

I have seen the glove thing but don't remember the details of which glove is right.
Dust in the wind is a strange but familiar tune. Make sense also.
Man, I have a hard time accepting tossing any of it.
With no game I think it comes down to spin speed and micron. It will be freezing for me where it all happens so bonus.
Like growing and curing [ which I also think merits discussion] I think a slower approach may work better.

I remember seeing that video the first time ~!
Blew my mind.

I know right these guys produce amazing product with no technology! The original concentrate

I don't clean any further, it's all personal or to give away. Im the type that only gets stoned once a day but smoke all day

Un-powdered Nitrile gloves are the ones you'd want for static cleaning.
And yeah I hear you about tossing anything, but you wouldn't really have to waste it, you could iso wash anything left after the static cleaning, along with the plant matter.

Exactly what we have here only I use everclear - I waste nothing

I do believe NS is onto something with the octagon shaped drum but yeah they done went loco on that price!
I'd bet with my 3D printer I could build the parts needed to go octagon.

I'm kinda digging this one if I had to buy again though

Also try using "pollen" instead if kief in google searches and it will yield more results. And in a strange twist, mine was made in Taiwan and outside the box they labeled it seed separator I guess for legal and customs.
But yeah, I'd rather have something come from Taiwan than fucking France. A tumbler made in France would probably surrender way too much in yield
I think a reasonably easy modification to the drum could increase the number of times the material rolls per revolution of the drum.

Install some 3/4" x 2" poplar staves inside the drum, long axis parallel. The staves will act as paddles (think front loading washer), turning the material once per paddle.

Maybe?

I like the way you think~!
Nice first post.
Thanks~! 🍻

I think that if the was more than one paddle the material be falling onto the paddle rather than the screen. Maybe

My drum has 4 tension rods going through it.
IMO they should disrupt a constant roll and create a small bounce?

Press arrived so whenever I get time I am all ready to go.
Got some experimenting to do~!

i was going to say something about this before and your post reminded me, i agree totally on having fins or flippers inside. i wish i would have made longer ones in mine..

i think it's important for the material to be lifted inside the drum and dropped onto the screen versus just rolling around like you say. i also feel it should be an odd number of flippers so the material never falls onto another flipper and always hits bare screen.

when i get the speed just right i can see and hear the material getting dropped and bouncing off the bottom of the drum.

What about placing a mold like this in the heated rosin press?
Pressure and heat....

Played a little this morning.
Practicing with old stuff from last year.

Very easy to gather the dust by simply lifting unit off bottom plate.
Super solid construction. The top that holds the barrel is one-piece solid aluminum.
License plate shows this is not a huge unit.
I like it~!

The old stuff is what I want to use. The flower im wanting to tumble was harvested oct 2022. Waiting on colder weather
While we may get to 50 today and tomorrow it is all downhill after that.
My shop is about 35f since it is closed up 99.9% of the time.
I am going to process all my older bud eventually.
None of it appealed to me from the start. Just being picky and being able to be picky I know I won't smoke it in flower forum.

Weather here suits me just fine. Suppose to be 55 on Tuesday last year the high was 0 and low -17

You guys seem to be doing well. Im definitely not saying my way is best but an industrial Chinese Flour sifter for a bakery is what I have always used.

I buy a block of dry ice for less than $20 and load it in the top chamber then frozen trim in the second fine mesh chamber and shake until the sifter isn’t producing. It probably only takes 60ish % off the trim potentially because of my impatience but then all the trim gets submerged in 99.9% ISO to make tincture for myself and older friends.

Sidasu Automatic Powder Sifter Machine 12 Mesh 80 Mesh Automatic Sieve Shaker Vibrating Machine 110V Stainless Steel Sieve Shaker Machine with 2 Screens, Sieve Shaker Machine for Flour Powders https://a.co/d/2WnvDHR

I will post a video next month after I chop if and trim everything if anyone is interested.

Peace
