Zen’s Winter Run 2025

I use 1tsp/gal, I've been warned about using too much. 1tbs/gal for a flush at the end is supposed to help it burn cleaner and stay lit better. Dirtbag got me onto that.

After I read your post I looked up the ratio I used to use

I used to add one gram per gallon, NOT one tablespoon

I think that's about a teaspoon, like Pipe said

I double checked my notes from Aquaman from an earlier issue. He’s more by grams but 1/2 tsp is better but 1 tsp should be good.

I gave the GM the last of the epsom foliar spray just before lights out. What I put in the top dressing will hopefully kick in by the weekend.

I don’t recall if I’ve used it all the way through to the harvest. Pretty sure Ive always stopped after the first few weeks of flower but would have to check. 🤔

You maybe right, I do start at 1/2 tsp/gal the 1st feed but after that 1tsp/gal....you've got me a bit spooked now , I may just trim that back a bit. I usually feed 6 gal at a time so I use 2 tbs, that should be 1 tsp/gal = 15 ml/gal. I'll drop back to 1.5 tbs/gal and see if there's any changes

By fluke I was chatting with Aqua and asked again.

He prefers to go by weight/grams but 1/2 to 1 tsp is still his advice.

If this was my strain I’d try Steamroller’s 1 tbsp but these are seeds I can’t easily replace. So I’m 🐔💩

All the non-cannabis stuff.

The large Mammoth sunflower head got bent over by the snow so I chopped it. Need it to dry enough I can get the seeds. I was surprised they didn’t turn black but Stonemason says it’s common, he’s even had purple which will stain your fingers.
IMG_7623.jpeg

The small Mammoth seeds were also white and a lot are empty shells. They pop like bubble wrap when squeezed. So I tested four a couple of days ago. I found only one out of four popped and they all had a seed inside.IMG_7641.jpeg

I’m also wondering if it’s the one I cracked open when squeezing to see if it was empty? Maybe I should crack them all next test, just to see if it makes a difference. 🤔IMG_7643.jpeg

The Teddy Bear seeds were two out of four and I kept one. I’ll use it to help with humidity and add some color.IMG_7642.jpeg

Hey, I love your little germinator cups, very cool. I have an issue though. I don't like seeing standing water when I germinate. I squeeze out excess water. I'm not sure what your success rate is with your cups & seeds but I'd try a bit less water for them. If you're just playing with the seeds try it with squeezed out paper towel pads. I have a better crack rate with less water in my paper towels. Not knocking it just trying to help, I get like that, I'm old, giving unwanted advice is kinda my thing...lol

I wish you said so earlier I would have sent you one with the cats. It’s good for up to four different strains. G$ printed one not long ago.

Why? I’ve popped seeds in shot glasses a few times as well.

Ah, you’re thinking it’s like the paper towel trick in a plastic lunch bag.

This is a bit different. I grabbed some pics from the site that sells another version. The pad inside mine are makeup pads she uses to clean her face after work. 🤫

Only the first 24hrs are supposed to be with high water level. After that you dump the water and replace it with much less.

Start water level.
IMG_7650.jpg

After 24hrs water level.
IMG_7649.jpg

I’ve tried starting it both ways and think the first way with the extra water helps but no serious testing was done. But proper heat underneath is essential here after summer. I let mine sit beside the hot water pipe on the gas water tank.IMG_7654.jpg

The one G$ told me about last winter(?) was called Cannakan. They wanted $60CND for it. So I printed my own. 🤣IMG_7653.jpeg

I don’t mind questions or suggestions. Without them I can’t improve.

When Steam suggested 1 tablespoon rather than 1 teaspoon I had to look up my notes and check things with AI. Doing that will make me remember better next time. It also helped you and Beachwalker a bit as we all had to double check. 🤣

At the end of the day we are a community helping each other. Not all answers will be right or work from person to person. But when I hit a wall it’s nice to know you guys will either set me straight or get a laugh out of my attempts. 😝

20251115: GM & GGB#4

Striping seems better. Overwatered yesterday but they seem well enough today. Just leaving them alone.IMG_7675.jpegIMG_7676.jpeg

Grease Monkey is getting big. Need more time before I flip. Let the roots get into the new soil and fill out first.

IMG_7291.jpg
After Bandit posted his find I had a look around. Not as good a deal up here but 10 for $16 delivered wasn’t bad. I went with the 4” as we share the vape and the glass can get warm. The ones you can get from POTV is $16 plus tax and delivery each.IMG_7679.jpegIMG_7680.jpeg

Plants are doing fine. The large GM lost a top when I forgot to squish a stem before bending it. Rather than let it slow things down healing I just cut it off it was a sharp snap that went more than half way through. 🤦

Hey, There is no such thing as over watering in one go. Over watering to me is giving to little too often or to much to often. You could pour 10 gal over them all at once and to me that is not over watering, excessive, silly and will wash away any nutes but not over watering. Giving 1 cup per day or a gallon per day is over watering. As long as there's a dry back period afterwards alls good to go.

The additions to the soil since switching to Gaia has thrown me off. Soil is heavier and moister hangs on longer.

Not a big deal. The leaves only drooped about half a day. I’ll eventually get the rhythm and amounts memorized.

I was just commenting on the over water comment you made. Its a comment I've typed a lot. If I see spot watering in a solo cup or where ever with plants looking rough to start and they go whats up with my plants? I've said to give them a gallon of water in a solo cup or some other foolish amount , then leave the fker alone. rather than 25ml or some other silly number they quote as the amount they gave daily/every 2 days

I know nothing of Gaia nutes but it may have Yucca powder in it that makes your soil hold water longer, you'll get it. I just read about then bought Yucca powder and only add 1/8thtsp/gal soil.I'm hoping in my AP's it helps draw water higher up in my soil.

I've got some excellent coarse perlite that I've forgotten to add three times now 🤣 It's starting to piss me off!!!

Hasn't really been compacted though I've had good roots, the Pro mix is about 15% perlite but it's very fine

I did find by the end of a grow Promix alone was a hard compact mass, specially in the summer in fabric pots. 1st time I added too much perlite like 30% plus in the smaller 1 gallon pot and when I went to transplant to 3 qallon it all fell apart. So I only add 10-15% more in my first mix then another 15%-20% in my last mix when they go into the autopots.

Believe me I want to add it, I really do! 🤷🏻🤦🏻 I've forgotten three times, but they say the fourth time's the charm! 😂🤣😂

Hey I've watched some gardening shows where when they transplant they shake and pull most of the soil off then hose down the roots, trim up any that are too long or ugly then replant in new soil.......Like no. I treat my girls gently I only have a few plants and that seems so dramatic. Those growers have time to lose to shock I suppose but I don't like mine having any shock, even losing the root ball when transplanting and having roots all over the place & not going into my premade hole gives them shock and lose growth for a week. Tough bastards these plants are, they earn the weed nick name.

With clones and seedlings in red cups I flood them and leave them. Seems to work. I have a clear cup inside so I dump the extra but otherwise leave them alone. Works great. Just have to watch it with seedlings.

IDK, between all the powdered items and worm castings to help activate them it’s just got more weight and takes longer to dry out. Not a big deal just a new curve to get used too.

Had to stop using the new watering wand so I could be sure how much I watered using the can. I need to mark the water jug better so I can use the wand but know when to stop. I don’t water to runoff with Gaia.

20251120: GM & GGB#4

New leaves on the GM still seem to be getting striping. All the pots dried out to the point they were drooping at lights on. Sunflower was in bad shape. Gave them all 2 litres each but couldn’t tell if they were saturated or I was getting run off as the soil had shrunk. Water just ran down the sides at first. Added 2ml ProCal to the water this time. The epsom in the soil should be mixed in by now I think. IMG_7719.jpegIMG_7721.jpeg

I might have to add more N. All the plants had the bottom leaves go yellow. It’s been cold over night and at lights out but never lower than 20*c and never longer than 5 hours.

The last two days the temperature at lights on has gotten between 28-30*c with the humidity around 40%. Only happens for a few hours before I can change things but it’s still an issue.

Someone was tired this morning.

Sometimes when my soil dries out I get run off unless I water painfully slow. I just can't go that slow with numbers.
This is when the saucer / tray earns its money to me.
I just make sure I know how much I am watering and if I get run off 9 out 10 times it is absorbed back out of the tray before I am done doing the room. I haven't needed to use a turkey baster to remove too much water in several grows.
I have to have saucers / trays.

I do that with the plants when smaller, like in the small grow bags. And you’re right the pots suck it back up pretty quick most of the time.

I watered them all to two litres yesterday using the wand. I have it on a fine spray so it takes a few minutes. I kept the nozzle against the inside lip of the pot and just did a ring around the edge. I was expecting runoff but didn’t get any.

With only a few plants I can manage this most of the time. I’m curious what the new saturation point is so will try 2.5L next time. It’s only water, maybe a bit of epsom and/or ProCal if needed.

The mammoth sunflower is up and getting new leaves. IMG_7729.jpeg

Hey, I found growing in 3 gal pots I'd use exactly 1 gallon of water per feed/water, in 5 gal pots 1.75 gal that would saturate and give me a small amount to suck up after the pots absorbed what was in the trays they wanted.

Sunflowers indoors?? lol

I found out two things with my 3G soft pots. Wider ones hold water longer than tall ones. And fill them higher than normal as they tend to stretch out and the soil sinks and compresses a fair bit.

I usually only get to use 1.5L before runoff. 2L was a guaranteed runoff. But this new mix is holding 2L without runoff so far. Going by your results I probably can get up to 3L as I don’t add as much stuff to the soil as you do, yet.

Sunflowers indoors?? lol
I’m testing seeds I harvested this fall. Rather than toss the seedlings once popped I figured I’d toss them in the tent. Adds humidity. I’ve used lettuce plants in the past to bump humidity so why not sunflowers?

I use old soil on them and my old Fox Farm nutes. They like 10:5:5 and I have 6:4:4 which is close enough. Lol

I’m drying the last set of mammoth seeds now before testing. They are big but all white and chubby.

I keep getting seedlings growing in my worm bin. Cucumbers and cantaloupe seem to naturally love the castings as-is. I’d plant them if it was spring but I don’t have room to grow that stuff indoors. But I was tempted.

I would have sent you some garden seeds but you don’t seems to grow anything other than cannabis.

20251123: GM & GGB#4

Found out ProCal is NOT the same as Cal-Mag. 🤦

Ended up getting AN Sensi Cal Mag Xtra 4:0:0 as that’s all they had left. Shops moving and today was the last day. I hear you need to use it sparingly, half dose minimum to start.

So maybe this is the root of my striping and yellowing the last while?

IMG_7770.jpegIMG_7771.jpeg

I was planning to flip next weekend as the one GM is at 6w and the GGB#4 is at 4w already. One GGB#4 is a little smaller but the other has caught up to the GM. But I want to fix the stripes first. No point flipping with a deficiency.

I set up the dawn to dusk on the ACI 69 Pro. 45 minutes from 0-6 power and reversed at lights out. Really happy to use these features even at 10% increments!

Nice, that’s where I’m at now. I need to find my smaller saucers so I can check the runoff now.

The GM leaves look better this morning. Stripes are gone but the blade edges are still lighter in colour. Lights out in a few hours so we’ll see tonight.IMG_7777.jpegIMG_7776.jpeg

I used to store all of my water in 1 gal jugs, I'd feed each 3 gal pot 1 jug. I'd mix each jug separately and it was a pain in the ass > did it to warm my water before feeding. 1 jug 1 plant, when I went to 5 gal pots I'd mix 2 gal for each pot then pour what I had left into a water jug, maybe for the next plant but my feed was all fked up, some plants didn't dry as fast yet still needed feed or water but they all got mixed up over a grow. I'd give it all to them. That's also why I'm adamant about how much it takes in 3 gal pots...10 ish years of holding my water in 1 gal pots.the Autopots.

Why 1 gal and not hold a bunch in one tank you ask....lol.......Did that and killed a bunch of plants. My water was unfiltered and left a ...slime???on the inside of the 20g opaque tank.I'd used t for years. One day I flipped it over to get water from the bottom the light was shinning just right, and I saw this???? something. I stuck a cloth on a stick and out came this smelly blackish shit....WTF...no longer did I hold water in large tanks....and I got a filter on my water system.
So I recycled clear 1gal water jugs.

My plants perked up100% so did my germination rate

I hate when they're all on individual watering schedules

Right now I have two watered together and the others watered 12 hours later, but eventually they'll all be on their own schedule 🤦🏻

Sucks that I know how to pick them up to feel their weight 🤣

Yep. Still do it. Two 2G and one 5G jugs. I only mix the 2G as needed. I’ve been using rain water up to now. Hauling it from the rain barrel when needed in the 5G. So far they are doing okay on the same diet. Give it take an epsom foliar.IMG_7803.jpeg
Then it goes to either a 2L or 1L watering can.

Lately I’ve been using the wand as it a lot neater, slower but neater. Need to mark the jug levels better as I just toss in the filter and go.

Using tap water is fine but 150’ish ppm. Rain barrel is 25-28ppm.

If I leave the 5G outside full for vegetables it can get a brown thin slime. Indoors it’s been good. I try to shake and rinse it out between refills. The 2G just get the same each use as they get nutrients added.

Once the rain barrel is empty I’m back to tap water. I empty and close it over the winter so it doesn’t split.

So I recycled clear 1gal water jugs. My plants perked up100% so did my germination rate
Think my 2L were old kitty litter containers. The lids aren’t water tight when shaken.

I’ve never had a problem with our tap water. Using the rain barrel for the Autos and some of the soil mix was a test for this run. So far so good.

I watered just rain water tonight. 2L each, no runoff. Hoping I judged the new weight right.

Rearranged things tonight.

I get lucky some grows but it’s not often they stay the same all the way through. (I’m sure they aren’t exactly the same but close enough they don’t wilt.)

Sucks that I know how to pick them up to feel their weight 🤣
I had just gotten used to my old soil and then I switch from liquid fertilizer to Gaia and KNF. Now they feel like they aren’t quite ready for watering when dry compared to the old soil.

I’ll water to runoff before the next top dressing and see what a good soaking is, use that as a guide.

Flip Flip Flip, Wow nice looking girls, You won't have enough tent to flower them if you don't flip soon. I learned a lot last grow on the size of plant needed to fill a tent. Flipping mine accidentally at 25 days was an eye opener for me. 25 days maybe a bit young but 30 should be good. I'm past that now and they're ready to flip soon as I get them transplanted, I've had some issues preventing me from getting that work done...laziness has a lot to do with that issue.

I bought a set of Ion beam side lights from ac infinity that helped harden and thicken my lowers. Last run was my first run and I'm hooked. I really like what they did. They would really help big plants mid way up their stalks. If you have a few bucks ( maybe Black Friday sales) I think they worked well, I tossed the controller, I couldn't figure out when I needed less than 100% power, they are only like 45w so not a big addon to electrical costs.1764079314691.png

My rocky start with only two Grease Monkeys popping and one being a runt really slowed me down. Then I popped two GGB#4 to make up for the clones that didn’t arrive.

So now they are all old enough t flip with the GM being about two weeks older. Trying to manage the different soil requirements is a bit tricky as well. But I’m working on it.

Flipping mine accidentally at 25 days was an eye opener for me. 25 days maybe a bit young but 30 should be good. I'm past that now and they're ready to flip soon as I get them transplanted, I've had some issues preventing me from getting that work done...laziness has a lot to do with that issue.
I’ve always flipped later than most. I just can’t seem to get things where I want them in 30 days so I go a little longer. No point flipping a sickly plant right?

Other than the striping it think I’m good to go this weekend. Give them there next top dressing.

Your plants always look good. Even with seeds they are bulky and frosty.

I can get lazy with them but that’s usually cleanup, filling the jugs, vacuuming the grow room. More often it’s just other things that are more important get in the way.

One of my big problems is patience and over correcting. Getting better with it but still hard to wait and watch before acting. One of the reasons I don’t mind peoples replies or opinions. I miss things and others might hit on something I’m not aware of. Even checking peoples suggestions help me learn. The epsom discussion on amounts to use as an example. From less than a gram to TBSP are all values that people use. Now I have to learn what works for me. At least I identified the right deficiency and what I needed to fix it.

The hard part is matching the right answer for me. As an example Aqua uses epsom and Cal-Mag opposite how you use it. He switches at flower from one to the other like you do but the opposite. Yet it works fine for the both of you. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for the feedback. Nice to know someone is watching and has thoughts on how I can improve things. 👊

I bought a set of Ion beam side lights from ac infinity that helped harden and thicken my lowers. Last run was my first run and I'm hooked. I really like what they did. They would really help big plants mid way up their stalks. If you have a few bucks ( maybe Black Friday sales) I think they worked well, I tossed the controller, I couldn't figure out when I needed less than 100% power, they are only like 45w so not a big addon to electrical costs.View attachment 119083
I’m out of power outlets. I’m already a little worried about my collection of power bars and extension cords.

OLDCRO’s controller has helped in a few ways. Saved me a mechanical timer, let’s me control the light from the phone, let’s me dim or brighten at 10% increments rather than 25%, and now I’ve added the dawn to dusk feature. Lights on takes 45 minutes to go from 0-7 power and 45 minutes 7-0 at lights out. AI says it will help in a few ways and improve harvest. So the controller and the new soil/nutrients are my big advancements this go round. Any extra plug in devices will have to wait.

Now if only they had a humidifier/dehumidifier in the same device. 🤔

If Aqua is in Coco that may explain the different Mag requirements that I have...but...my graph shows clearly the need for Calcium starts week 3 of flower at bud building time so I don't know how or why he'd switch up...I'm not saying hes wrong but his water and mine are obviously different

I grow large bushes and trees. Small is so much harder. 🤣
I like the big trees! I've grown a few big ones, my Romberry's used to get pretty big! I was going to let these White rhinos grow a little more but Pipe suggested I flip them soon, and I'm glad I did cuz with five in there it's already going to be a "challenge" 👈🏻🤣

Ya, not saying either is right just trying to match a solution to my problems. Rarely is there just one solution to a problem.
