I do that with the plants when smaller, like in the small grow bags. And you’re right the pots suck it back up pretty quick most of the time.Sometimes when my soil dries out I get run off unless I water painfully slow. I just can't go that slow with numbers.
This is when the saucer / tray earns its money to me.
I just make sure I know how much I am watering and if I get run off 9 out 10 times it is absorbed back out of the tray before I am done doing the room. I haven't needed to use a turkey baster to remove too much water in several grows.
I have to have saucers / trays.
I watered them all to two litres yesterday using the wand. I have it on a fine spray so it takes a few minutes. I kept the nozzle against the inside lip of the pot and just did a ring around the edge. I was expecting runoff but didn’t get any.
With only a few plants I can manage this most of the time. I’m curious what the new saturation point is so will try 2.5L next time. It’s only water, maybe a bit of epsom and/or ProCal if needed.

The mammoth sunflower is up and getting new leaves.
