Ban Hammers

I’ve only ever sexed plants in veg. I was taught it’s no good to force plants to show by inducing flowering. This is bro science but it’s how I was taught. Just like the whole pick the latest showing male is bro science. The only way to tell a good male is to run the offspring. Imo.

I don’t think really care about any of the drama just seems silly to call out a herm when it’s just a early male.

I’ve run a lot of seeds at this point and a bunch of clone only, pretty much anything will herm if you treat it bad especially in the later half of flower. It’s a survival mechanism thats allowed cannabis to survive till now.

Some of the best strains have come from accidental herms

I’ve only seen one plant that had male and female parts in veg.

Sorry to ask, but what is "pollen chucking"?
It basically means you put a male and a female together and let it just happen. You get the seeds and sell them.
Really good breeders will test their seeds before they sell them. Many years ago they would back cross to the parents and the diversity from one seed to another was not like it is today.

I've seen my fair share of weirdy plants come thru the room but I've never seen a male throw balls in veg. That screams Rudy to me and I don't want Rudy in my crops at all. Some like autos and I know there are some good ones out they're but they're not for me.
I have had freebie auto seeds that were actually phototropic but never the other way around. That's some reckless pollen chucking IMO.

Males are more eager to flower than a female. A little trick I use to get them to show is go 30-36 hours dark at flip. Males will show in 3 days or less while ladies still take 10-14 days to show. It gives more than enough time to cull males before the flowers open.

Only males I've ever kept are the fellas that spit trichs on their balls. He's a stud at that point IMO.
And then I don't even keep the whole plant. I select the best flowers from that male, cut them, and put them in a vase just like people do with cut roses. They'll stay alive for up to 2-3 weeks in vase and unload a ton of pollen.
Then I do selective breeding, matching flowers to flowers, or colas to colas so the pollen hitting the lady is from a trichy male cola rather than just some random flower off the male. I basically go with the idea that sexy flowers produce sexy offspring ;)
This is exactly my thoughts on the subject. It is acting like an auto, being sold as a photo.

Perhaps hermi is the wrong term, but the results are the same - crap genetics.

Most of my experience has been through cloning having worked in LGO's but growing from seed, I've never had a plant sex in veg.

I'm no botanist but from the little I do know sexing in veg like that is more than likely releasing the seeds before they've been properly stabilized by the breeder.

Ive only had 1 herm seed until recent, and it was an auto from ilgm, even their shitty shit seemed more stable.
How can you run 8 seeds of a strain, get herms on most and call that tested......
Then fed me the BS line of "cookies and cake strains are just prone to hermies, its all part of the game"

I have only really had 1 plant hermie on me. It was a 2K cut of Ice Cream Cake I got from a friend and it only threw about 15 seeds. I do remember the first time I grew in a green house I got a cut of gelato #33 and I managed to find the balls a day or two before they opened. surprise what does Ice Cream cakes come from Gelato #33

Ive had plenty of plants shoot nanners in late flower thanks to either light leaks, genetics, or stress, but this was my first run in with full on male and female parts. I missed some balls and found them just the other day at like day 40... so far i havent seen any fat puffy calyxs with seeds poking out but if i do, ill just grow them outside.

If you turn on as much light as you can outside of your tents and go inside and close up the tent you can find the light leaks and use some duct tape over the light leaks to seal off the light.

I can’t believe y’all have never seen a plant show sex in veg. Literally every seed I’ve ever grown I have sexed in veg 4-6 weeks every time.

I have 30 seed plants going right now. Sexd them all in veg
I have no real say in this as i just started my first set of regular seeds.
But all my feminized seeds showed sex by the 6th or 7th week of veg.
I havent had any experience with males yet.

Apparently i have an agenda and I got calling me out in the dms. I honestly don’t give a fuck about y’all’s drama I was surprised no one sexes in veg and I was surprised y’all are calling out herm for an early male.

Laugh the fuck out loud. I guess I can’t debate anything here. Give me a fucking break.
The difference is your talking preflowers… and i agree you can sex them in veg by the preflower… i do all the time.

Full blown expression of sex is different. Id hve to go back and look at pics but i think thats where the miscommunication is

Its because of this vent, i dont ever close it because if i do, all i hear is my tent popping and crunching from the suction on my t6 fan, and it sounds like its gonna crush in on itself and i dont like it lol

Edit: Picture helps...

Generally males tend to show before females in my experience. I also tend to see males grow a bit faster / taller.

I do not do a lot of reg seeds but no, I've never seen balls like that very early under Veg lighting.

Yes, I think this is the problem. Sexing a plant early, and that same plant showing full on balls is 2 different things. We seem to be combining them and not on the same page.

Well, GrowHobo has signed off, and I need to leave for a while too.

I really don't know how this got so contentious. Feel free to DM me when you come back, I think we can find middle ground here. I think where things got twisted was the terminology. Hermie - show sex - full on balls - whatever.

And no, I did not edit any comments.

I have a beast exhaust fan too, what I do is force air in as well to keep the thing from caving in.
Got two 4" inline fans to keep up with the 8" exhaust.

OK, I'm going to tie this up in a bow so we can move on.

And here is Nesta's response

You all post so damn fast… just getting caught up. Heres my deal. I never had an issue with Trustfall on the Farm. The opposite quite honestly. I picked up several cuts from him that were bug free and killer. Some still in my garden. This plant threw balls in what I would consider early veg, which is why I figured it was herming on me. I can’t have balls popping so early and unpredictably in my small hobby grow. When I started my thread here, I had a user ask me if any of Trustfalls gear has hermed on me, because they had an issue. I had not. I probably shouldn’t have outted Tenguseeds so fast, but it is was it is. I have no ill will towards Trustfall, I know some of you do. Thats fine. Im 42 years old, have two kids, run a business, and have zero time for forum drama. He put me on blast, and the younger me would have come out firing! No energy for that anymore. I will grow the beans I got from him and give honest reviews.

Time to spark some herb!

So the term Hermie came from Nesta, but it was not a good use of the term. Also read the tone, he is not calling anyone out or any BS. Just stating facts as he sees them.

My feeling is that this got heated because of the source. Still some exposed nerve there for some of us.

I'm asking everyone to not use the word hermie to describe what is happening here. These are not from Fem seeds.

I'm also asking that the source not be a consideration in the discussion. That goes for me too.

We clearly have people with different experiences here, MAx just said he has seen this too. And we have growers that have never seen this, but you would not want to call them inexperienced. You can put that label on me if you want, but clearly Bandit is anything but inexperienced. And he is just one.

So there you have it. Shit happens. Let's move on.

I've read many times plants will show sex in veg when they begin to alternate nodes and people rely on that to sex their plants. I've just never seen it with mine but I wish I did. Certainly woulda made some grow a lot easier and less wasteful upcanning a plant that would later be a male. Most I've ever seen are the two soft thorn like things that come out but never the signature cluster of balls or two pistils. I've always had to flip to see it.

Seeing those balls in veg would set off alarms for me though. Maybe normal for some but would be very abnormal in my experience. And I've been called a lot worse things than inexperienced in my life. 😋

Hermie is another animal. A late single nanner near harvest is no biggie. But equal balls to pistil ratio early is trash. If left to flower out for the seeds to ripen those resulting seeds will be feminized. Good stuff can come from that seed stock. Original Gorilla Glue seeds came from a hermie mother.
I had a Chocolate Thai hermi and her seeds were fem, better than the original, and those fem seeds did not hermie.
