Yeah they look a lot like the ones I started using too, just confetti flavored.
I really lole them for a few reasons... They don't absorb much water so they're easier to clean and reuse. I feel like the roots navigate through them a little quicker. Smaller grain fills in the gaps better, keeping light out of the res. Easier, more uniform fill around my gro-plugs. Esthetically pleasing.
But they get all over the place and will really wreck havoc on my poor electrician knees..

his are way cooler!!!!!
they're heavier than i ever expected. in fact with my six inch netpots they're way too heavy and was worried about the integrity of the lids i have and lifting them up all the time to look at the roots. i went back to my 4" netpots and they're not too heavy for those.. actually that amount is just right. not enough to cause a problem but heavy enough that it provides a better seal and holds the plant stronger. but beware if you're using a big 6" netcup...
oh and they happen to cost like twice as much because they sell them by weight not volume.. haha

oh never never never kneel on one!!!! if i drop one i make sure i pick it up right away!! those other ones just crush when ya step on them.. not these!!!
on the flip side because they are heavier they don't fall out nearly as much. i've only dropped three or four in the actual grow area.. now outside my clumsy ass knocked the entire bowl over and i had to pick up every one of them off the floor!! don't do that either!!! hahaha

chiller has been spot on and keeping the rez perfect. actually it makes the room temp and rh better as it's easier to control without water temp fluctuations.
plants seem to like it!!!!
they've been drinking a lot in the past three days, more than they ever have before, ducky's bill is under the lid already!!! hahaha
and of coarse i can't leave well enough alone and always gotta be fuckin with shit... i put my heater back in to make sure that wasn't my previous problem... i put it in there on friday, it's not plugged in or turned on but just set in place.... but i want to know for sure that i can have it in there before i actually need it and since it took a couple weeks to show problems before i figured no time like present!!!
i also added 25 ml of mr fulvic on friday night. ppms when up 10.. now sitting at 440 right now. ph has been pretty steady, a slight rise, up to 5.87 right now. again, i can't stop messin with stuff!!! hahaha
but no complaints or worries at the moment.. mostly excitement and fun with a little tiny bit of nervous. another 6 to 8 inches and i'll be able to do the squash with the screen!!! (i hope)

I would never attempt something like I'm getting ready to do without one... Here's the best part I have no clue what I'm doing

i kept saying to myself no way it can stay this hot out, its gotta cool down.. it did eventually but my basement is 77 degrees by now. my rez sits right on the floor so thats what my water temp is without anything. so with the freezer packs i would drift from 77 to 72 back and forth everyday.
now it's rocking at 68.9 steady eddie!!!!! the chiller doesn't run much at all, maybe once every half hour or forty minutes and when it runs it only runs for about ten seconds or so and shuts off.
I put an elbow at the end of the output and it makes the water in my rez like a whirlpool and keeps it circulated really good. i'm so glad i went overkill on the size and i think you will too.

we made it three full weeks so far... i think maybe another week or two till flowering if they keep growing this rate.
i'm getting a crash course in raising the food levels.. three times now i've made significant jumps and they just keep eating it up!!
i'm now at 660ppm and just starting week four since the transplant. these two plants were the runts and never made the cut out of the other 16 in soil. i can't imagine how fast a big plant would grow!!!!

i really think they like the stability that the chiller brings. it has been 68.9 and has not moved a single tenth since i turned it on. the chiller itself is set to 71
and even though the buckets are insulated the chiller still helps keep the grow cabinet heat and rh just as steady. i've been keeping it 78 inside
crazy how it all just started clicking... just hoping its not a fluke and i got it all sorted out!!

in a way i'm glad i waited to get one or i would have prolly spent more than twice as much on ebay or amazon.. first time going with the ali express.
i'd like to get another chiller down the road, one would work awesome for a large scale canatrol!!!

right now at this moment if i had to choose just one, i honestly don't know which i would choose. i'm kinda in so deep now i really don't have to choose. my only complaint about the hydro is that i lost my veg cabinet. i guess the flip side of that is i get to build a third one now! haha

end of week four since the transplant... all systems a go and we're ready for blast off!!!!!
still chasing the food intake with these plants.. they're eating more than i ever thought they would and they're thirst for it hasn't let up one bit. been a busy week with increases..
and yet ducky is still floating under the lid everyday!!!
today i got my ebay special ph doser!!!! i still gotta put in the probes and calibrate, i printed a couple brackets to custom it out a little...
with them drinking like sailors i'm adding about 1.5 gallons a day so i decided to put together a simple top off circuit using a usb pump. i printed out a new bracket to hold the float and the dosing tube together..
i want to mount the top off stuff in the corner and put the fil tube in the back where the chiller lines are...

yeah man, they're growing for sure!!!!
i got everything wired and plumbed.. i ended up putting the top off stuff on the left instead.. i already had a hole in the lid from the air line that i never use. i haven't had bubbles in my rez since my whole carbonic acid formation issue so filled the hole with the top off line.
i have the rez at 720 ppm and the top off at 830ppm to slowly increase the solution.. i only have about ten gallons in the top off just to test. but i'm going to have to do something else because this container is not big enough...
so for now my space looks like this....
that black barrel is only about 20 gallons and five gallons shy from my system.. i'd really like to use it but it's not gonna be big enough and i've been warned and i don't wanna have to redo it because i didn't listen!! so i'll probably end up using this white one that i currently use as a mixing barrel and pump the solution into the rez from there. i'll probably end u using the white one for top off and find something else to use as a mixing barrel, or maybe rig it up to use it as both.. idk for now i'll leave it flexible and see what works best as i move forward. ..
but we're all connected and running semiauto right now..

Before I signed up here I kinda knew my water packaging days were done or going to be done soon as with my current situation as you know..
Okay I knew I was going to have to graduate to some kind of water program..... your system or systems like yours have too many moving parts for me.
I wanted to do and still do want to build some kind of Live bed indoors but the other building i have for that is far down the road. I'd like corporate some of my native soils, but that's still a idea.
Alright man... oh yeah I almost forgot, I was going to drop my crab pots the other day and check the regulations and it's closed for my area, but I can go out in the ocean and drop them if I do that again, I plan on fishing one or two more days around here town home situation just to run out my bait...
Then I may break it my smoke Pole can't you be that year...

thats my humidifier, i'm not using it right now. it's a winter needed item. heater and humidifiers for the winter and chillers and dehuey's for summer...
oh i for sure dove down the rabbit hole far... i fuckin reached china!!! hahaha when i very first started this whole hydro adventure i asked all kinds of questions.. but i had no idea i was gonna go automated like this. i remember learning that on top of base nutes i had to buy cal/mag too.. i was kinda bummed bout it like man now i gotta buy this too... HA! if only i knew then!!!! here i am a year later and i'm still buying shit!! i mean i still buy stuff for soil too so it's all gravy!!!
how many miles from shore is that regulation? i assume your boat had no issues with that 33 mile drive?

That calmag deal is funny.... Being automated is fine, but that has changed I guess a little bit
With the way I have the plants are set up right now I'm going to have to hand water a couple via the self watering bases
And I'm ok with that, but cannot pack that amount anymore and enjoy the work.
So what do I do.... well now I need to pack a hole bunch of water... hahaha
Yeah I'm kinda bummed out on this one, I live on the strait of Juan De Fuca (inside) about a 20-minute drive to the boat launch.
The ocean (outside) is a hour and a half drive to the boat launch it's still open outside, I could drop crab pots anywhere I wanted there it's year around out there. HOWEVER...
YEP, I was going to hunt in November.The wife's knee replacement is supposed to be around that same time.
So now I suggested that I go in October...... With the muzzleloader. Didn't really want to do that this year. I wanted to do the lazy manhunt with the rifle the driving around and looking around and now I actually have to get out of work for it... dammit...

We're about even on height, but the doc weighed me in at 218 this morning. Trending down, but still slow. I'm not looking for a fight. but have a plan for defense. If I get jumped by a rogue water man, I'll try to weather a few blows until I can get in close enough to grab him by the gills.

my dad loved muzzleloaders... it was always his favorite season. he didn't really get into them until i was in my teens. i remember one year i heard him shoot way out back on the other side of the mountain and i rode my four wheeler out to see and he was shaking his head with it down.. i pulled up and the deer were still standing there.. he said fuck i missed!!! the he got all anxious because they didn't run away so he went to load another round and forgot to pour the powder in before he packed another ball in!! hahahahaha he says to me quick go home and get my 06.. i did, they were till standing there.. got the kill in muzzle loader season with the rifle.. yea i'm son of an outlaw!!!!! haha
oh.. okay... so you have your RO on a float going into your top off and just leave it turned off while your nutes are in there? i think i can make something like that work..

so i went to check on my plants tonight and there was nothing for me to do... i was like shit i guess i'll go find something else to do!!! top off must have worked because the rez was at the correct level and i also gained 10ppm.. i think this method of making the uppers hotter than the lowers is something a much more established grower would do... i think this could be dangerous for me if i'm not careful. i could quickly overdue it.. but in this case right now i know for fact my uppers are not too hot even straight up so adding it in shouldn't be a problem.

Now that I'm thinking about it I'm going to need something for water changes anyways.....so.. probably have to pick up one of those RV water hoses I suppose I don't want to run it to a regular garden hose tastes like rubber I don't want contaminants at all from a garden hose.
Well I think I'm out of place where I can start thinking about installing that system ... well see.....

i can make this happen pretty easy.. i've been collecting a few parts for it for a while. valves, elbows, float, tubing.. i think i got it all
but this makes more sense to me now, when you were recently saying how you just add water sometimes when you're in a jam with time and didn't really mix nutes... so were you just turning on your RO to add to you top off and that just waters it down a little?
i'm right there with ya man.. all my hoses are drinking safe!! only one vinyl hose and thats for pumping spilled water out of the basement which i hope i never need to do again but it's happened twice so far... even my car wash hoses are drinking lines, rain collectors all have em, my hydro stuff.. all drinking safe!!
i just ran my plumbing to the hydro a few weeks ago so i get it, i waited till it was a total pain in the ass and i was sick of it too.

Yeah in a pinch.
This was when I used Lotus nutes. They were much more of a pain to mix. I haven't had to with Athena's. Now it only takes maybe 10 or 20 minutes to mix a batch after it's filled. So really, if I have the time to top it up, I probably have the time to mix a batch.
My work schedule isn't nearly as chaotic as it was last summer, also. So maybe it had nothing to do with the Nutes.
