I removed one of the leaves and stem to take closer look couldnt pinch it off had to use pruner the outside of stem has no give hard like a rock. Maybe thats why stems are splitting no give in them.
 
I’d just take those petioles off so they don’t attract unwanted insects.never seen that before..this plant is soo full of surprises.
 
fuck... there's a disease that causes this. i can't recall what it is off hand. iirc it's part of the pythium family. that stem splitting the way it did is signature. lemme try some google fu and i'll get back if i find anything.

there was an entire section in the overgrow bible about this particular thing.
