Took me a while too. We bought some as well as starting by seed. Took a month before I got the swing of it.
I did learn a few tricks from you I can use. The Bokashi soil mixed with some compost and manure. Then I mix it half and half with the old soil. Testing it out this year with all the sunflowers. Want to do it with all the vegetable soil next year.

Neat. Do you like the flavor of the Dragon's Tongues??

I went with some old standbys: Burpee's Burpless (least productive but largest variety for me), Straight Eight and Tendergreen. My wife likes the tiny varieties (like3"-4") that are good to snack on skin and all. I need to find a good variety for that, next year. I had hoped the Tendergreen are would fit the bill, but are bigger than I was looking for. Still a good cucumber, though.

I also sampled some sashimi cucumbers grown at the local nursery. Medium to large size, smooth skin and small seed pocket. I liked that one and am considering planting some next year.
