i was obsessed with MC Escher as a teenager. he was one of the most innovative surrealist artists next to Salvador Dali. That orb self portrait is definitely one of his most iconic pieces aside from the impossible shape staircase

...it's an iron oxide compound, formed by soil microbes who were "breathing" iron instead of oxygen. The stuff is emitted by the soil. When it hits the surface of the water, it oxidizes and forms a brittle film.
