It’s a small container, AI says each bin can hold 300 worms. I say BS. I started with 80, and I know a bunch have died but also lots of eggs.
I try not to over feed or over water. Getting the right moisture level is the hardest in these small bins. Everything but the bedding has moisture in it.
When it’s all good it smells like good earth. Never any poo smell. When it’s too moist it can have more of a compost smell. If it ever smells like wet garbage I think that would be bad and need fixing/cleaning.
My worry is the mites are eating the worms alive. They shouldn’t if all is well unless the worms are dead but I think if the food is low they will go after the worms. I see them on their backs like riders in Dune.
But so far no smells unless the lids off and you’re looking into the bin(s).
Why brave? It’s not like they will escape and hunt me down while I sleep? (That’s what cats do when force fed pills.)
My wife wasn’t happy. She killed the big bin experiment I was planning in 2023/24. But allowed this test with conditions.
I have 1/2-1/3 of a bag left but picked up two more before my store closed. The two times I emptied the bins it was enough to fill one of the big red coffee cans. That was enough to top dress three 3G pots.
We had it too but it never built up, too warm. It felt like flurries but was water where it landed. Supposed to be more of the same for the rest of the week. I’m over it already.
I enjoy that part. It’s only a little messy unless I knock something over. I do it all in the old work room. But it can get tedious adding all the new powders. I might get mixed up on occasion if distracted.
