Hey Im new and have a question about salt buildup in promix looking for some advice. I just flipped to flower after a 4 week veg. If it looks like my plants are a bit on the lighter side of green doesnt that mean that there isnt a risk of buildup so far? After reading post after post on other sites i dont know what to think. Some say water/feed to runoff… some say not to water/feed to runoff as it washes the buffer out of the medium, some say feed/feed/water will help the plants use up unused nutes in the medium that causes buildup is sufficient. Some say theres no need to flush or water through unless they have been over fed. Im thinking if they look slightly underfed there shouldn’t be any need for runoff. Any input would be appreciated on how people here make salt based nutes work in promix Thanks

I’m not in promix, I’m in my own soil mix. I allow a ten percent run off. Two reasons, one I don’t want to flush the microbes out of my medium, and two it’s the way I assure myself that the bag is throughly watered.
I can also tell you that for the past couple of years I have had many cultivars that had decidedly different shades of green through simply genetics.
Pics speak a thousand words, got any?
BTW, welcome @Speedypete !

+1 on runoff, dry pockets are bad.

I'm not in Pro-Mix so you may want to wait for those that use it like @GoodShit97

I agree with @CannaGranny. As far as watering, I think it depends on the type of fertilizer you're giving it. If you're giving them salt ferts then you want to water with 20% runoff to prevent salt buildup in the soil. If you're running dry amendments then you probably want to water to very little runoff for the reasons CG illustrated prior.

You mention your fear of salt buildup in your media. What fertilizers are you using?

Healthy looking plants. I grow in promix i feed every watering but only a quarter of recommended dosage and yes a little run off.
thats about what Im giving them, 1.3 ml/lt last feed and calmag They recommend 4ml/lt

Talk about brain fart. It's in the title.....

I've run their line many times. Now that you've flipped them what are you giving them? What recipe?
I took advice from a member on here and last two feeds were 2 and 2.25ml/lt botanicare calmag as they were deficient from the start then 1.0ml/lt rhino skin 0.5ml/lt b-52 and then base nutes up to target ppm….sensi grow 2 part So 1.4ml/lt put me at 740-770 ppm in 0ppm ro water ph6.1-6.2

As was also suggested i want to try grow nutes to second week then 50/50 grow /bloom to week 6 them bloom to end

Being such a low npk id feed every watering till slight runoff and call it good. I don't think a build up would be and issue. I havent seen one yet in promix.
@Pipecarver is in promix as well and he feeds every watering too.
Thank you everyone for responding. I want to try to continue to feed lite.I hope in time i can develop an ear to understand what they are telling me. Thank you pipecarver for sharing your experience. Also thanks to sshz for helping me out with calmag issue! Its great to have a place to turn for advice from been there done that people. I am thoroughly enjoying having found this board for that! ☮️

Hey Yes I was feeding every water but that was in Auto pots with a reservoir. In promix / perlite 50/50 mix pots.

It showed me how much they can take without cooking them but that's a bit different than straight Promix with a water feed water cycle. I'll do back to back feeds in soil if I see I need it but I wouldn't do 3 feeds in a row, I'd still throw water only in there. I should also never need 3 feeds in a row, if a second feed didn't help there's another issue going on.

Ok so you were running it like i do.
Every 3rd watering was plain tap water.

Only if I see a need or if I miss a feed and water instead I'll do back to back feeds to catch up and I'm thinking now with my auto pot experience I could double up and water back to back in flower without fear of locking them up.
Yeah i kinda just send it lol.
I run plain water whenever, but i try to shoot for every 3rd or 4th watering but sometimes its like 6 feeds then a plain watering lol.
Promix seems like a pretty forgiving media.

That's why I encourage new growers to use it rather than Coco. I see a lot of noobs having issues in Coco. I think coco is great when you know how to grow but when your just learning Promix is almost idiot proof and I'm a living example of that.

100% man. My grows sucked until i made the switch to promix. I was fighting with precharged soils thinking it was gonna be easier but starting at zero is wayyy easier

Not quite idiot proof lol I found a way to fuck it up. Pretty sure i have one plant infected with root rot. New growth hasnt looked right last couple days, wilty twisted. Yesterday i thought i could smell something. This morning I definitely can. From what i read i should yank it outta there and cull it. I was overwatering little plant in big pot and learned from it now. No sence trying trying to fight pythium is there?

Lights on i just took some pics. Wife says its smells like “dirt” Maybe its not what i thought and being paranoid I dunno See how new growth on front left is curled and distorted It was way worse last night after i watered it. I also see distorted new growth on center back row. Anyone have any thoughts on what may be happening here?

Many choices for this.
Wind burn
Low temps
Lack of a nutrient
Too much nutrient
Light burn
Too dry
Too wet
With your watering process, are you just watering the root zone or are you saturating the entire pot?
This one seems to be upfront, is it getting a strong blow from your fans?

Hey The last was with runoff the two prior waterings were just before runoff. She is upfront and the fan is not directly on them but giving them gentle constant movement The front left and right get separate waterings from the rest as thier usage is more. They both got exactly the same yet they differ in appearance

Are you doing a watering in the root zone, or the entire pot?

She did the same thing with last watering but recovered within a day although the new growth hasnt looked right for awhile

Okay I gotta run, take Hubby to the Dr. I’m thinking the watering process may be some of your problems. I’ll hit ya up when I get home and try to help you with that.
