lmaop the old ladies are gonna think im outa my mind when they see me out there, one of my fave spots to look is a huge retirement community that seconds as a elderly forward operating base! This is neat info! I cant wait to get out and see what i can find. Do you keep anything else you find other then morels?
;roll;smoke
Ya we eat chantrels, puff balls, chicken and hens of the woods, bolelets, oysters .the chantrels are the only ones you realy need to be careful of.they have a poisonous look alike called jack o lantern.they are easy to tell apart though.

thoughts on amanita muscaria?

apparently...they CAN be "safely" consumed, if "prepared" right?

If you dont mind me asking if you sold those locally what would you pull prizes wise?
They got up to 65 a wet pound retail last year.i never find enough to sell. My brother inlaw does.he hunts the little patches in the city and finds so many its crazy..he gets 30 to forty a pound from the stores that sell them for 65. Here is haul he found in a tiny little patch of woods in a housing addition in the city.all under one tree. Screenshot_20260103_101925_Messages.jpg

Never ate them.got a buddy that loves them.i will ask him how he eats them sometime.
apparently thats what is being used extracting for smoke shops choco mushroom bars, i had one before that was actually.....good......think they extracted whatever from amanita, could be wrong or mistaken.

thought that packaged claimed amanita extract, id have to find it.

Ive harvested them for folks whom swear by muscarin
"Ibotenic acid → Muscimol
  • Primary conversion: Ibotenic acid decarboxylates (loses a CO₂ group) when the mushroom is dried or heated.
  • Result: Muscimol, which is the main psychoactive compound producing sedative, dreamlike, and hallucinogenic effects.
  • Significance: This conversion reduces neurotoxicity because ibotenic acid is an excitatory neurotoxin, while muscimol is mainly sedative."

sweeet.

i thought ive seen some of these before in my area.....

I always wonder how many hundred we walk or drive by every year.here is a patch we picked out of an old guy's front yard. We stopped and asked him if we could pick them and he said "ya go ahead i mow them over every year boys"Screenshot_20260104_135613_Cloud.jpg

Here is the Indian pipe, ghost plant,Screenshot_20260104_135930_Cloud.jpg patch we found one year.there were over a hundred of them on on hill side.actuauly a plant not a mushroom.makes a purple alcohol tintiture, supposed to be a pain killer and help induce lucid dreaming.

These are a non-chlorophyl containing plants that are parasitic on certain mushroom species.
I believe the genera that are parasitized are in Russula and Lactarius but that was too many braincells ago to be sure!

wow guys thanks for all the morel hunting tips!!! i've only ever found them by accident one time and didn't really know where to look or how to look really.

i'm going to ask the owner of the apple orchard next to me if he sees any on his property.

i've seen chicken of the woods and hen of the woods near me but never really knew much about wild foraging. decades ago when i first moved here a guy was trespassing and it turns out he was looking for mushrooms, the dude was super cool and spent the rest of his day showing me what to look for and let me tag along.

i've forgotten most of it,, a few years ago i out this app on my phone but have never used it yet...

85 small Grey's this morning. First for the year.still early here. Should be a good year we are flooded out with rain. Just need a little heat . These were all under one tree.dead elm.20260411_150749.jpg

they look delicious man!!!!!

thanks for the reminder.. our weather has been so back and forth. i think we just had out last freeze yesterday morning (according to the weather guessers)

i just sent a couple of your photos to my neighbor to be on the lookout!!! i don't know all the rules of mushies but his property is on a steep grade facing north. he had lots of trails and covers acres everyday exercising his dogs. he said he'll look for sure.. i figured four eyes is better than two!!

They like south slopes early on then the north slope as its gets warmer.we hunt the trees .dead elm and dead aple.live ash , sycamore ,tulip, and black cherry. The ones found under the dead trees will fizzle out as the years pass.the living tree patches come up year after year.they are poisonous unless you cook them. Watch out for.the false ones

They have come earlier than usual the last 3 years here.they usualy follow what the lilac bush blooms are doing. When you start seeing turtles may aples , dandelions, and jack in the pulpits its mushroom time. Also when the toads start singing. The peeper frogs come first then the toads.

very cool advice!! that helps a ton, thanks man!!!!
