A Turkey In The Hay 🦃

I never seem to have a real loud overpowering smell, it stays pretty chill until I chop and I quit running filters. I think it has to do with my temp though as I rarely get above 78F. I had it mid 80s a couple times and that is when it would smell for me. Also the time my pole fans accidentally got turned off, I guess heat started to build up a bit to cause the smell. Anytime I've smelled my plants like that when it got too warm in the tent the finished product was always less tasty than on runs it didn't do that. I've heard people say when you smell it, that you are smelling the terps cooking off...I guess that may be true? Also heard that terps are produced constantly by the plant so my thought on that is a mid flower heat spike isn't the end of the world if you can get the temps back in check and they got a while to produce more terpenes since some cooked off?

Sometimes the stuff is so good it doesn't matter...I've also pulled really tasty bud from outdoor that went thru heatwaves....but outside with the sun, and the fact they were growing amazing and weren't deficient everything was probably right for those plants to keep pounding out the terps....that and it cooled the last couple weeks.

This is just my interpretation, curious to hear others... I've only been at the growing since the 2000s
Ya I have noticed that too if the tent gets to hot too late in flower terps sufer in end flower

The light failed again so tomorrow I'm going to hook up my 1000watt ballast & a new 1000watt hps bulb I have in storage, and run it at 600w for the time being

I found a 600watt ballast online for under 50 bucks including shipping so I'm going to order it instead of the one on Amazon at twice the price.

I guess no smell is the wrong way of saying it, it has a smell for sure but mostly comes from handling it or being right up in the general space. I also smoke cigs so I could be smell blind. I do think I know what ya mean though, some of my plants smell as a clone. My stepson says his clothes smell like weed I just try to blame it on the crazy amount my wife smokes so it ain't my fault or the grows fault. I may have some ignorance to the smell idk. Amazon crack head showed up at my door saying damn it smells good in there....right after harvest....I said yea it did but I smoked it...hoping she'd take the bait it was just what I was burning recently 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tried to germ an outdoor plant I grew...was supposed to be purple kush it came from...heavy indica I know that and it smelled all the way out to my mailbox but I just attributed that to being outdoor in the heat...hmmph 🤔

Maybe it's time?

It's salt 30 bros I'm going for a schnozzerdeuschens
I don't worry about smell anyway, I don't have neighbors anymore, I bought the filter because I didn't want to be smelling raw cannabis all day, but like I mentioned there's nothing coming off these plants 🤷🏻 I bring in wildflowers from the hayfield that smell stronger than these plants

So I found the good 100 watt ballast unfortunately I couldn't find a new 1000 watt bulb

I thought I had one but the best I have is a bulb with a year and a half on it 😲

I'm more inclined to use it than to trust the 600W that's in there now because 1) it's not firing, and 2) I don't trust ballasts when they start misbehaving

I found a couple of dead ballasts but there are no use, I don't know why I packed them

On a brighter note I finally found those 6-in Square pots that I've had since my hydro years back in the '80s, I knew I packed them! 🏆

I believe @Pipecarver had issues with his digital ballast and found some resolution.
He was an electrical guy.
Maybe, we'll see.
Yes I ran hps for years and my last issue was from a burned out lamp I though was good and I couldn't get a ballast to fire it up. I was thinking ballast the whole time, replaced parts then put in a new lamp and wtf it was a lamp all along. I've had lamps burn out and they looked burned out. Not that EYE Hort, it still looked good but wouldn't fire up. I had swapped it out with the wrong lamp.

I used 1 mechanical hps 1000w ballast for 10+ year before it needed parts and 5 more years before the core went. So I went with digital, burned out 2 digital in 5 years and went back to a mechanical. Noisy, hot and heavy but they fking last for a long time and up north here I can use the heat 9 months of the year. If it hadn't been for Spiderfarmer giving me led lights I'd most likely still be with HPS

Interesting, I have a new 600w HPS bulb in there now, it did work flawlessly for about a month

It came in a two pack so I'll try the other one tomorrow and see if it could possibly be the bulb that doesn't want to fire up, or maybe I'll put the MH back in for the test, thanks for the input

I didn't swap out the ballast for the thousand watter, too lazy, I figured I'd deal with it until the new ballast came

I thought maybe you were saying that it was some flaw with the bulb that was preventing the ballast from firing it?

Maybe I didn't understand that correctly but I'm going to try a different bulb tomorrow night when it turns on anyway, and see if that might have something to do with it

my new ballast should be here on the 27th so one way or the other we'll get there

Tomorrow's going to be warm with a rain/snow mix, around 40°

I'm getting out there in the garage with an Irish coffee and going to split a shit-ton of wood 🪵🪓

I tell you what, that little hydrolic wood splitter is a lot of fun!

So this is going to sound weird but this is actually not the first time I've seen this

When my 250/400/600 watt timer kicks on at 9:00 p.m. & a little red light on the timer lights, the ballast will not kick the light on

two nights in a row at 9:45 I've noticed it dark in the tent

So I unplug the light from the timer, plug it back into it and the bulb lights

No idea why this happens (or how it can even happen🤯) but I have an old ballast that does exactly the same thing out in storage

I have a 400/600/1000 watt ballast that I can use temporarily but I don't like using underrated bulbs in thousand watt units

So I guess I'll just try to stay awake after dinner to make sure the light comes on at 9:00 p.m. 🤷🏻 while I wait a week for the new ballast to come

Always something, but you already know that...

I had this when I used segment timers, some timers are not up to the shock of starting a ballast, I moved over to heavy duty timers and I've been fine since, I think they just ware out with the start up shock.

I'm using the same one that I used from the last grow room but I do have a few other heavy duty timers around, I'll swap it out and give it a try, thanks

So three plants are perfect now!

The little mutant is still showing some leaf twist, it's got those weird little three-fingered leaves that cross over each other, runoff was 6.5 pH @997ppm, a little high for such a small plant but it's been corrected

The two I flushed just now were 650ppm at 6.5 and 350ppm at 6.6

The remaining one doesn't need watering at this point

I found a TIMER that I can swap out tonight for a test, but I have another old school bulletproof one out there still packed somewhere, when I'm out splitting wood I'll poke around see if I can't find it, that one I know works I've had that freaking thing since the '80s, back when they actually manufactured quality products

I'm bad at throwing stuff out and I must of had 10 - old 1000w lamps & I must of mixed up new with old and ran it like it was a new lamp, While I was in flower the ballast got hot hot and then wouldn't fire up the lamp at all. Nothing, So I swapped out parts in my ballast and still nothing. I was sure it was a fairly new lamp...wrong. I didn't think lamps but soon as I swapped it out for another used lamp it worked fine

Gonna try timer tonight, bulb tomorrow if it still won't fire, after that I'll just wait for the new ballast to come

Yup, from Boston, in Maine now

I've got one with your name on it if you want it. No strings attached, everything will be free.

These LED equate performance of around a 500 watt HPS or Metal Halide. Footprint for bloom is around 3.5x3.5 and much greater for veg, around 5x5.
They use a controller for dimming and spectrum but also work fine without it by raising or lowering for intensity. Power draw is 400watts.

Stoney has dibs on one and I was planning on selling the other two on Ebay but we're family here and I'd rather see it go to you than try to make anything off it let alone let ebay and USPS get in on the deal.
Plus the 3rd light and the controller I have will be listed. I'm sure that will be stressful enough and ebay will still get their blood.
If you want it, pm me your addy and I'll try to get it shipped by late next week.

Thank you very much for the kind offer, but I'm going to pass

I appreciate your offer & didn't mean to sound short, I haven't been feeling well recently, I'm feeling better-ish now

I use HIDs 9 or 10 months out of the year due to the cold here, in the summer I'm going try spider farmer

The reason being is when I left the Cannabis boards 4 years ago @Pipecarver , a grower that I've known for quite a few years was still growing with HIDs and was just starting to use spider farm leds

When I returned I saw that he's made a complete switch-over to leds and he's very happy with them

so this spring I'm going to ask him for a recommendation for a spider farmer for my 4x4' tent, but thank you again

Hey, ya I'm sick too, feeling like shit, gooey sore eyes, bad cough, aches, no appetite or energy with more snot than I can ever remember, I'm non stop plugged and that make sleep impossible, headache. 3rd day of no smoking...so irritable goes with it. Wife has gone deaf lately with this bug and that makes communicating difficult.

I think the SE7000 or the G8600 fit the 4x4's. I have 2-SE3000 & 1- G3000 in a 5x5. growth wise they both perform about the same but the G puts out a lot more heat

Wow sounds like you got a nasty flu, you guys take care of yourselves and get better, it's just going to take time

I take big doses of vitamin C and D during flu season and I don't know how you feel about ivermectin, but last time I had the flu back in 2021 it knocked the fever out in <36 hours.

I got something else going on now, I don't know if you've heard about the unusual fog that's been all around, it happened here on the 23rd of last month and I've had upper respiratory issues since a few days afterwards, still do.

Thanks for the lighting recommendation, I'll look both of them up and probably will have some questions for you going forward, it's not something I'll be buying till around May anyway

I don't plan on using leds for more than a couple months, like July and August, but anything that will keep the heat down is a big plus, particularly because I hate air conditioning I almost never use it
