CannaGranny’s Corner a Thread For General BS and Good Will On BudBuilders

Hey, nice bike, I used to ride like the wind, I road thousands of miles on a bike very similar, We road bikes that were 21-22lbs. My best bike was a Nishiki, a 21lb rocket A Chromolly frame 21 speed. I had a few over the years but that one was my baby, cost me a fortune in 73 at about $700 if I remember right. I still have the saddle bags I used while touring. I lived on my bikes, I could ride 100 miles easy 5-6 hrs. My legs were like motors that just ran while I sat on my seat and enjoyed the scenery. Its all in the breathing, get that right while in shape to ride and you can ride for ever.
Nice! I have another 30 mile coming up next month

I'm planning on doing a 220 mile trek next year, two day event, 110 each day. I'm psyched

I rode 1 trip Vancouver to Reading California then hit the desert and took a bus home. Another trip I took the train to San Fransisco and road down #1 to San Louis Obisbo. Another I took my bike to Hawaii in Oct 77 with the idea of riding around Oahu, then off to Maui, never made it I stayed on the beach with a bunch of hippy's till July 78.

The bike was my independence, I could move around Vancouver almost as fast as traffic or faster when it was busy, In the middle of the night I was a ghost, bike just ticking away beneath me almost silent through the night. I loved the fog, a warm Indian sweater good gloves jeans with hiking boots, and a tuque on my head,

Man I love hearing that, poetry brother

Was just reading this manual, it's crazy, they mention how the frame is lighter than two full water bottles. To think the water is almost doubling my curb weight(think wheels and handlebar already) is crazy. I'm in love with this bicycle, I felt the previous owner loved it with a similar passion as you describe your love of riding.

What's the best gear oil to use for those long treks?

Its 710! Stay lifted everyone 😏
Taking some doobs and my dab rig fishing 🎣 😂
Nice, have a good time! I'm jelly, stupid corporate quarterly meeting today with district managers. Fun fun lol
What can I tell them today??

At least company is buying dinner and drinks tonight after work, but I'd much rather be outside today like you!!

Yes, those were the days. My shifters didn't lock into a gears we had to find the gears and center it by ear, I think much better and imho easier to operate. I had a mountain bike that had click in gears but if not adjusted exactly right it would chatter in different gears because it wasn't 100% centered. I hated that because there was no fine tuning for each gear as I rode.

I found some of the worst places to ride were on the flats, the wind always seemed against me and flat land where I was from was cattle country. Cattle country = fly country and there's nothing worse that cruising along with a good breathing cycle going and wham in goes a fkin fly, cough cough gag spit fk.

With that said I liked mountain riding better, sure you work you ass off going up but its all free coming down. That free can be painful too though. I took a spill coming down from Crater lake in Oregon one year, I took a corner going a bit too fast with gravel all over the road, down I went gear and all. Scrapped up but nothing broken, hand, elbow and right night took most of it, bike was fine. I recouped for a couple days in a camp ground down the hill before heading out again.

Continuing on I got to Klamath falls, where after 1/2 night in a closed city park I got 2 days in jail for unlawfully sleeping in the park after hours & assaulting a cop.....NO he fkin kicked me to wake me up, I had a small hunting knife under my sleeping bag and I grabbed it after getting kicked, still in its sheath. He grabbed it out of my hand kicked me again and threw me over, handcuffed me and took me to off to jail.

On a Friday night, Monday morning I saw a judge and they let me go after being charged with Vagrancy and notably dropped the assault charge. Giving me a lecture on what could have happened to me if they wanted to press on the charges. They had stored my bike and stuff and let me out of their cop garage, I bolted as fast as I could for the California border about 20 miles away. MFkers stole my Jean jacket too, only thing missing a nice faded jean jacket I was so proud of back then.

You're not the only one getting old, here I am making an afternoon coffee on the weekend instead of beer!

Oh and here are some cool pics of the Shenandoah valley taken yesterday on my mountain bike journey that almost killed me... Almost ate it a few times, coming very close to flying forward off the bike going downhill too fast on technical terrain.

PXL_20250712_151305453.jpg

This is probably the only flat part of the track, I ended up losing my shirt that was tied on my bike in the downhill and I was not going back to get it soaked in sweat and out of water

Beautiful beautiful Shenandoah.... Shenandoah River going down Shenandoah valley surrounded by the blue ridge mountains, I love Virginia

PXL_20250712_151229290.jpg

Edit: I was googling something on bicycles and stupid Google Put this suggested question in my response, "is 40 too old to mountain bike?"

Wtf Google, I'm not going to quit, i don't care if I am 40+
Going to use that to push me more

Have a good Sunday everyone crushing it!!

Try Freezeland Road sometime on Blue Mountain. A lot of bike enthusiasts ride by my house on their thrill seeking ride down my mountain. Promise not to throw marbles out on the road , lol.

Hey everyone,

I've been very preoccupied lately, I'm still alive, even though I can't sleep rn lol. Did my first 5k last Friday, it was surprisingly fun!

Been on a serious used bicycle hunt for 2 weeks, occupying all of my free time with browsing the internet for the perfect bicycle for my next tour de France, and I found it last night!!

I'm so psyched!! 1993 carbon fiber trek. Fully loaded, top of the line when it came out, original owner, receipt and paperwork.

She's gorgeous and I wanted to share, she's all carbon besides the rims, you can literally lift the bicycle with one finger, it's that light.

@CannaGranny hoping you like this color, manufacturer calls it, Ice Violet. How bad ass is that color name?!

Love you guys!!
Watch out on my next bicycle race, I'll be breaking some hearts!
Great score. That looks mint. Can you tell if it saw much use by someone who took excellent care or just stored bought and stored well?

It was used, but kept in immaculate shape by one owner. He babied it, kept all the original everything, original receipt, manual, factory touch up paint, etc etc. Bought it new in 1993 for my a little over 2k

Leaving after the purchase he was heartbroken that the bike was going to see rain on the back of my car for the ride home, it has never been in rain he said.

First ride last week tire blew, need new rubber, coming this week. Is why I took the old mountain bike out over the weekend instead of the new one.

After I waxed it up

Edit, maybe original rubber, or mfg replacement

I don't know anything about bike, but can tell it's a quality score. The condition seems nuts.

Do you really run 130psi in those tires? In my head that makes perfect sense for speed. Makes me wonder about traction and comfort. Is it a harsh ride? Is comfort something you just sacrifice for speed?

Just curious and taking a chance to learn something.

Honestly, I get frustrated with some road bikers around here. We have a lot of twisty roads and you can be driving responsibly and come up on someone riding really quick. Growing up, we'd burn the same roads up on our bikes, but always got off on the shoulder when we heard a car coming (I guess electric vehicles today might be hard to hear). Some bicyclists ride side-by-side and don't move over, at all. I know the laws put responsibility on vehicle operators, but sometimes there's no evidence of interest in self-preservation. It's a wonder there aren't more injuries or fatalities. I think it's harder to get used to here, because it isn't a daily encounter. So, it's not like you're keyed up and anticipating an encounter. More like a random surprise run in.

I always had a spare tube and yolks stashed under my seat.
Zefal on board pumps were the big deal back in the 80s.
Most bike tires do not carry MFG date like car tires.
If they do understanding them can be a challenge as there is no standard.
Nice score ninja.
My nicest ride was a fuji I completely customized. All gears, cables, shifters, crank, pedals and sprockets.
I kept medium tires not as tight as yours as I was rough on riding as a youth. We got out of cars way or got run over~!
My current bike has carbon fiber forks [Iron Horse]. Smoking sure don't help with riding.
It is probably 15-20 years old?

It’s why I ride motorcycles. I wouldn’t make it to the end of the driveway if I had to peddle, lol

Last time I rode my bicycle it reminded me I was not young anymore.
I like to take it on vacation to cruise the coast early. Only I never vacation anymore.
Motorcycle has been idle almost as long as bike. NY has helmet law.
I love my convertibles~! The first day I drove top down I said I could sell my MC without regret.
Different toys when your 60+.

I’ll never give up riding a motorcycle till I can’t physically do it. I ain’t there, yet. But I am well past 60 and at the next decade, lol.

Hey hey!!

The road bicycle thing is 100% new to me from mountain biking. But yes you do feel all the vibrations from the road, having no shocks and high air pressure and all. The tape on the handlebars is meant to help with vibration and grip, also have riding gloves to help. Then a good riding position etc

Tbh the previous owner couldn't do it anymore cause of arthritis pain, no more bike, motorcycle and bicycle he sold.

Yeah the tire pressure is crazy right?? So 120 is Max, but using a calculator I should use 104 Psi based on total curb weight, including me on the bicycle, and road conditions, maybe 6 variables you punch in, some like weight distribution of the bike.
Just changed both tires and tubes last night, tubes dry rotted. I just learned what wire bead tires are for bicycles, boy they were fun getting on lol

It's a little intense, everything must be just right to ride for hours in joy instead of pain. I've looked up that there are several places that to a bicycle fitting for $100 with sensors and equipment to measure pressure points and get a perfect adjustment for comfort to your bike. Going to see if I can figure it out on my own though.

I get mad at other cyclists too, mostly people who use the sidewalk when a bike lane exists and then cross the sidewalk... Makes me mad, DMV says to share the road so I am on the road practicing all the road laws too. Now some roads have a sign "bicycle may use full lane" this means they can ride double on those roads. Just did a bike tour earlier this year and saw why, for safety in packs on big groups in the country side.

I have a road route here I like that has a bicycle lane the whole way

Hope that didn't come off crazy lol

Hope Everyone has a great day!
Here is a great riddle for someone maybe

PXL_20250714_233336231.jpgI'm puzzled, I found this in the box of bicycle stuff, no idea what it is, Google lens can't seem to find out either.
I don't think it's bicycle related but have no idea

Anybody seen this before?

Looks like it comes from a pump or something that either inflates the tire or checks the pressure.

Guessing the black knob is the open/close valve.

I agree, bike was freedom. Fog was cool but even rain was okay unless a downpour.

Even after I bought my dads car I still used the bike for years.

Later I started riding again for exercise, alternative for going to work, and I really liked riding as a kid.

Unfortunately when I got a motorcycle I hung up the bike and didn’t touch it again for a few decades. I tried teaching the kids and riding with them but they really weren’t into it. Daughter stopped after a few years and my son still has no interest in learning.

I’ve given away six bicycles over the last decade. Three to kids just passing by the garage when I’m there. Still have three or four left.

My last bike was a Giant. Custom wheels with stronger spokes. Used it for trails when on vacation and to/from work during the good months. Haven’t touched it in years.

Riding to work downtown I got the broken off metal brush tooth from a street cleaner through my tire twice in three years. I picked up Kevlar tires after that and never had another flat. I’m sure luck was part of it.

I had a seat with a shock in the pipe. Helps a lot. Someone stole mine downtown one day when I forgot to take it with me.
