Grump's Guzzlers Grow 🌱

Sorry man I’m slow like @smoke these days lol.
No worries. I didn’t give you much time to answer.

I'm in a bit of a hurry to switch to flower in hopes to avoid some potential overcrowding, so they got topped again. I'm sure they'll be fine. Most of my cuts from the other day looked healed over just fine.

Plants look very healthy.
Thanks a lot, big guy. I learned from the best 👌

A bit too fuzzy to say for sure but this sure looks like how beneficial fungi forms
Heck Yeah! I'll try to remember to snap a clear picture of the roots sometime today.

Healthy. Give her the gas. Roots and water are not limiting growth
Will do!

They seem to have recovered well already so, as soon as I get the time, they'll get a res change with transition nutes. I'll probably aim for ~500ppm which is double what they're getting now.

I've been really happy with these plants. Vigorous growth. Healthy color and roots.

Question about my Orca.. I've never dipped anything into the bottle, only pouring from it into a small beaker, and it REAKS. Dead animal smellin' ass REAKS. Is that a bad thing? I've been using it regardless...

No should not smell. These are spores of bacteria, not live bacteria. Spores are not active

1748195312707.png

They start with live / active vegetative cells and stress them to get them to develop the spore coat and put them in hibernation.

Bacterial spores are specialized, highly resistant cells formed by certain bacteria to survive harsh environmental conditions. They are metabolically inactive and can withstand extreme temperatures, radiation, and chemicals, according to Harvard Medical School. When conditions improve, they can germinate back into active, growing bacteria.

metabolically inactive means that they do not produce smells.

That means that something else (anaerobic bacteria) has gotten into the bottle and is using your spores as a smorgasbord. Throw that bottle out with extreme prejudice!

Good news is whatever is attacking your spores has no impact on your roots. Biology is so friggin specialized. Either your plants or rhizosphere can repel the foreign invaders or they simply cannot eat roots. But that bottle is toast fo sho. Friggin waste man. But your colony is already established so adding more from that bottle is like putting on a 3rd or 4th rubber. Only this rubber got used by someone with the clap.

Well shit 🤣 🤣

It's probably about time.. I bought this bottle in September of '23 I see. I won't buy such a big bottle this time.

12 months on the shelf sealed, 6 months once open. That's best you are gonna get from a bottle without sterile lab conditions.

It's always best to maintain the colony from grow to grow rather than start over from the bottle, if you can. You have a healthy grow now, if possible plan on keeping the res alive from harvest to planting and this same colony will grow endlessly like sourdough starter.

Everybody seems to have bounced back just fine. I'll train all the colas outwards as they stretch.

..so I went ahead with the res change. Bloom nutes without the PK booster and a little heavier on the CalMag. I assume the pH will drop a tit as it circulates, but I'll keep an eye on it.
20250525_153951.jpg
I'll slowly transition the light into the flower spectrum while also doing a slow flip to 12-12. I'll cut an hour out of the day until they're on at 4:30am and off at 4:30pm. This time schedule will play well with my work schedule allowing me to see them once a day on dayshifts and twice a day on nights.

Gonna leave the temp where it's at but I dropped the humidity down to 50%.

Moving fast. Everyone got their 4 colas tied down except for the runt. Great color and growth.

Chugging along with the flip. They're getting more red than blue as of today and they'll end up with 15 hours of light. Slow flip still in progress.
20250527_115434.jpg

This round has been an extremely satisfying grow. Super smooth and super fast. Nuggets are on the way.

I was reading up on some of the free stuff Athena sent me. I decided to use their stack product. They say it can be used as a "root drench" in your transition nutes, so I threw it in at about 1.75ml/gal. It's a kelp extract that's expensive as hell but I only used 75ml. $100/liter... doubt that I'll ever be buying this stuff.

Super clean job with the training. Looks like art ;leyes

I tied the runt down. Great looking plant if it wasn't following in the her sisters' footsteps.
20250529_120604.jpg

Still great color and growth on everyone. These Guzzlers beans love the Athena cocktail they've been forced fed with the power of RDWC.
20250529_120831.jpg
20250529_120619.jpg

This is likely the last time they'll get tied down. I'll let them spread a little, but the rest of the growth will be focused vertically.

Roots are still beautiful. Really packing on the upper side sprouts. That Stack might've stained 'em a bit but they're looking healthy and great, otherwise.
20250529_120721.jpg

This is the last day before the flip is official. Spectrum has reached CLW's recommended preflower ratios and will stay here until I see some white hairs. Then just a slight reduction in blue to the flower spectrum. I'll take that extra hour out of the schedule tonight.
20250529_121108.jpg

Once again.. Athena's holding a ROCK SOLID res. I hate that I got these nutes for free because I'm sold on the res balancing. At least I don't need to replace every bottle...

Plants are growing well with the ppm they're getting so I won't change the res until stretch is over with. Then I'll hit 'em with 6-700. For now, this is what they get.
20250529_121208.jpg

Thanks for stopping in. Next update will be after a little bit of stretch. Won't be doing any training aside from maybe sliding the stringers out a bit. Won't trim till stretch is over either, so the next week or so won't have any news. Til then ✌️ & 💚

Can’t be certain without a microscope but that color looks perfect to me with a happy colony growing on them.

Natural color of bacillus

They become purple under gram staining. Those are the typical photos you see but they don’t look like that in the wild.

So my rotten Orca still seems to be working? 🤣

I use these...
...by inoculating them with some RO/Orca for a week or so while my seedlings sprout.

To keep my colonies alive, do I just pull these stones after harvest and leave them in some res water? How long can they stay like that? Should you bubble it?

What we can say is plants are healthy. Not sure what inoculated your res but it seems to be happy about it. Carry on.

I used the same stones. They work great. A little hot melt glue and you can build structures if you want. I flow across these in the res then take the whole structure to a new grow. Instant colony day 1.

To keep the colony alive you need a source of sugar. In the res your plants are it. If you remove the plants for any lengthy time you will need to feed it. Not a lot for sure. Colony collapse happens when you overfeed. The doubling time on these is so fast as long as they have excess food they will reproduce. Once the colony gets too big they will eat all the sugar fast. Then when it’s gone they starve. All at once. No bueno.

Naturevibe Botanicals Dextrose,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DG3XHMC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Dextrose works good easy to mix and add small amounts.

If you want to target feed bacillus this is what I use

IMG_5323.png

Smells a bit like wort if you ever brewed beer.

There are others like nitrobacter that are part of the nitrogen cycle. A dab of ammonia or a rotting food source will keep the whole chain of helpers alive.

If you want to go to this level lmk and I’ll walk you thru it.

that stuff popped up on my radar a couple months ago and i forgot it till now. its made by the same company as orca and great white. been meaning to ask if anybody here had used it..

i'm kinda surprised more places aren't selling a product aimed at this, it seems like it would be good to use.

Bacteria are specialized. They evolved to take advantage of certain environments and food sources. If they all lived in and ate the same stuff we would just have one massive colony world wide. Whatever could compete the best.

The bottle you mentioned has the stuff needed to attract compost kinda bacteria. They take organics and break them down. Sometimes doing that results in nutrients available for plants to take up in the right ionic form.

In hydro running ionic salts like gh there is no need for those bacteria. Keep them in the organic soil grows. Breakdown of organic material only hurts us in hydro. Ph swings for example.

There is nothing wrong with the product it is just being misused if running chelated salt nutes in hydro.

why do that food all come in separate bottles? it's not the bacteria right? like we have to establish the correct bacteria and then use the agar to feed it?, am i understanding that correct?

seems pricy but if done properly you would never have to buy a bennie ever again... kinda like having a good sourdough starter for bread.

You only need to or should feed the colony if you are trying to keep the colony with no plants.

It is not common practice to do it this way. You want the plants to grow the right size colony and maintain it. That’s where the symbiosis comes from.

Hopefully I’m making sense

The runt is no longer the runt. It's stretching like a muhfucker.
20250604_072225.jpg
This is the 6th day after the slow flip, 10 since the transition began. Everything's shaping up nicely. They're each drinking a half gallon per day and have sucked 15 gallons from the top-off since the resevoir change on the 25th. 580 up top and 460 below so I assume they're eating as well. Rock solid 6.3 ph.

In the next couple days, when the the top-off is nearly empty, I'll be doing another res change with the same transition mix, minus the STACK. That stuff left a helluva film on everything. I'll mix 40-50 gallons up top and just leave the bottom as is. They seem to be happy with it so I'm just gonna give 'em what they like until I see some cotton. That's when I'll throw in the extra dose of PK.

Well I fucked up a batch of nutes by using Grow instead of Bloom. I'm gonna blame my work schedule and not the 2 doobs I burned beforehand. I'll fix it when I get off work tomorrow morning..

Anyway..

Everyone's looking great. The runt is outpacing the others by a few inches now. She's really decided to stretch. Other 3 are short and thick.

Roots have exploded as well. Nothing to complain about there... 1st is the front left (the runt) and second is the front right.

20250607_082020.jpg

AND WE HAVE PISTILS!!
The runt was the first of the bunch to spit hairs. First appeared 2 or 3 days ago.
20250607_082045.jpg

That's it for tonight... or this morning for you daywalkers. I'm off to bed while I pout about my res change mishap. I'll have a new batch of RO tomorrow and I'll get it straightened out.

Next update will likely be DD (defol day) in a week or so. Til then.. ✌️& 💚

They got a res change this morning.. fugged up again. Minor mishap. I forgot to release my float valve so, by the time I woke up, the plant-sites dropped an inch or more. Not terribly detrimental, but a whoops either way. Stay sharp out there folks.

460/6.3 at the plant-sites and 800/6.3 in the top-off. I'll let them get topped off with that until I feel like the stretch is over with. Another week maybe. This should slowly raise the plant-site ppm. Then a full on bloom mix and a HEAVY defoliation. Aside from being topped, they haven't had a bit of defolling done to 'em.

I have some very confused plants...
20250609_072548.jpg20250609_073901.jpg

There's decent flower development but I've got 2 serious hermies and another that spit out a few ballsacks and bananas... so I went ahead and got a little scissor happy.

Before

After

I stripped the shit out of the hermies. Front two and the back right all had balls which has me leaning towards a light leak... i'm going to bed though.

This plant... I wish they all grew like this. It laid flat very nicely and is the only clean one of the bunch so far.

Looks like everyone is doing fine after yesterday's massacre. Stem rubs have a gassy dank nose. Roots are impressive.
20250610_080150.jpg20250610_080224.jpg

Leaves are flat and taking in the full on flower spectrum.
20250610_080535.jpg

I've got the light sitting 38" above the shorter ones. The "runt" is about 8-10" taller. Fingers crossed we don't have another freak that never stops stretching, that way I can finally take all 4 plants to harvest...

-------

So my chickens have gone blind... but I fixed it.

Their poofy head feathers grew over their eyes which made it basically impossible for them to see anything but their feet... I have a little daughter so I have a surplus of little rubberband hair ties. Hardest part was catching the flighty timid fuckers.

Anyway... here's one that wasn't losing it's freakin' mind. She got a pink one.

We're a little over 2 weeks of 12/12. Still stretching but it's slowed some. I'll take a few leaves here and there in the next day or two to open it up the bushy ones a bit.

Looking great 👍

The runt really took off with the flip. As long as it stops stretching, she'll pack nicely with nuggets.
Same nose on all the stem rubs. Gassy funk.
20250614_063548.jpg

Getting some cotton tops. The shorter plants have some super tight spacing so I'm expecting some serious buds. Time will tell.
20250614_063559.jpg

Roots are doing their thang. Looking kinda funky but it's the heavy red spectrum.
20250614_063643.jpg

They've drank 15 gallons since the last res change on the 7th or 8th. That's a little over a half gallon per plant every day. The 800ppm top-off has raised the ppm of the lower sites from 480-540. I'll change the res again in a week or so, going a little lighter on the CaMg and a little heavier on the PK.

I'm contemplating dumping a few gallons from the plant-sites to up the ppm a little bit. Give 'em a 5-10 gallon dose from above. They're doing great though, so I've been able to talk myself out if it. Less work this way. If I've learned anything from @steamroller, it's that slackers can still grow great weed.

I need to dive in there and do another check for hermies.

I don't know where we're at with flower. I rarely even know what day of the week it is anymore.

It's becoming clear that I haven't the slightest clue when it comes to training these beasts. It was getting really congested in there with some leaves creating condensation between them, so I gave them one more hack. Cleared out some overgrowth to make room and clipped a bunch of fans that were blocking out the light.

I can't handle the inconsistencies anymore. All 4 of these plants seem to be on a different time frame. Got the leggy fucker up front starting buds. Back right has a little more development. Front right is the furthest along with the fattest buds so far...

Then there's the back left. It's barely started growing pistils... it was shaping up to be the best plant in the tent, but it must not have been mature when I flipped or something. It's not trimmed yet in that video above, i now realize.

I'm working on a little project that's gonna get me some clones going for the next round. Keep your eyes peeled for that thread.

I'll be mixing a new batch of top-off nutes tonight. They've really started to suck it in. Leaves have great color. Only issues I saw during the hack-fest looked like high humidity to me. Bushy in there.

Ywah these are a Humboldt Seed Company strain, but it's been every grow of multiple plants for me so far. Testers and not. These are supposed to be BX2 S2 and they're all over the place. Same nose on all of 'em though.

I've been wanting to make the jump to clones eventually, anyway. I'm not gonna phenohunt, just pop a bean and clone it 4 times and go.

I think everyone is finally done stretching. I waited too long to move up the light and burned the tallest a little bit, but otherwise looking really good. Looks like I'll get a decent harvest once these fatten up.
20250627_111637.jpg

Front left. It's a lanky one, but it's FULL of budsites. It's probably the plant that will dictate the harvest window.

The three all have the same nose and it's beautiful. It's giving me some Island Sweet Skunk, which is crazy because I just started looking for some ISS beans.

It's a citrusy pineappley gassy smell and I'm diggin' it. Can't wait to see these things fatten up get frosty.

I put in an order for some more Athena nutes. I was hesitant because they're pretty pricey, but I can't get over the rock solid resevoirs. Super easy to mix and it just stays where you want it. That's a big plus for me with my busy schedule. I haven't adjusted the pH of this grow YET, only fine tuning with each res change. It levels out in a day and stays put.

I grabbed a bottle of FADE also. It's not something that was sent in the sample pack so I don't know whether or not it's necessary, but it claims to give a boost to your terps. I'll gladly give that a whirl.

I made it through 2+ grows with the gallon bottles they sent. I still have enough Grow A and B to do another run, so 3+ grows for that stuff. Lowering my ppms this round will also help conserve the Bloom nutes, maybe getting 3 grows out of it as well.

They're BALANCE silica product works also. I know it's costly, but it's so much simpler than premixing the Agsil like I was before, plus it keeps a more stable res from my experience.

All that to say... Next round has been re-upped and I'm ready to grow some Kitchen Sink.

Everyone's experience is different, but if it's within your budget, I strongly recommend Athena's Blended line of nutes for anyone doing hydro. Simple resevoirs make for a simple grow. Keep it simple, stupid.
