Grump clones the Kitchen Sink

I did another water change and pulled one out of it's slot... no roots just yet. I think today is day 7? I lose track so easily. 7-10 days is what the intranet says so I'm not worried. My inexperienced ass thinks they look great 👍

I didn’t remove any leaves. I tugged on the deadest looking one with tweezers and it didn't pluck right off like I expected it to, so I left 'em all.

I used the Photone app with a paper filter (I assume lighter weight than they suggest) and it read 68 ppfd. Lighter weight would read higher so I'm guessing it's at least 15-20% lower, going off of reviews and Reddit threads. So I bumped up the light a bit til it read 96 ppfd. I'm guessing that puts it somewhere between 75-85. Spectrum is set even reds and blues at 12r:4w:12b.

Tent bounces between 80 and 83 degrees at 76 to 82% humidity. VPD bounces from .65 to .9.

I grabbed the recommended paper for the Photone app and, going off of this, I upped the intensity a bit.

It read 83 so I upped it to 130 with these color ratios...

I actually checked the pH and ppm this time with the water change and gave them some RapidRooter with a little CalMag at 6.2/140.

I also lowered the water level, following @Observer 's observation...

They're looking pretty light, so I'm assuming they've shifted focus to growing roots and we'll see some leave the plug in the next couple days. I suspect lowering the water level will help.

This is the front right. It looks the best so I'll be trying to snap a picture of it daily to more easily watch the progress.

is that just how warm it si in there or are you making it that warm? i might be wrong but i thought cuttings like it more in 72-78 range?

Running a heater...

I thought I read 80-85 somewhere and I stuck with that until OB mentioned VPD. I lowered it a few days ago to bring the VPD around .8.

I've been dropping the humidity every couple days also.

Short answer.. no one told me not to?
I'll drop it and the rH and keep OBs .8 VPD.

What what kind of light is that recommendation for?.... Is that supposed to be just general?
This is for the CLW SolarSystem 1100. It's a beast of a light. A few guys around here use CLW lights because of the ability to choose the ratio of Reds Whites and Blues.

Bandit recommended even Reds and Blues and I found a setting that gave me 130 ppfd.

I know what you're running, I own 2 CLW lights...

I ask because the PPF numbers are quite a bit lower than what I'm running with a white led I believe it is only 33 watt.
just curious

my notes say 75-78°.. but that is from a particular inkbird thermostat that i've always used.

a quick ask to dipshit gemini and it says the same...

My light is as high as I can mount it. 69" above the clones. That might be why I'm getting such low ppfd at those settings.

Nope....

I'm running different lights for my seeds/clones it's a soft white
20250811_151640.jpg i run right down their throat.... My Photone say* almost 500 PPF...
Don't...I was just curious.
In my opinion you're best to stick with what they're telling you as far as CLWs Settings, spectrum... I'm a noob when it comes to LEDs...
I choose to run these cuz I know there not that strong, I like to lighten up....
You keep doing what there advising. Don't let me confuse you I was just curious

All good.

I was running CLWs recommended ratios at 3r:4w:10b until Bandit recommended and even RB ratio with less white.

I got the the ppfd recommendations from Google's lousy AI

I was only giving them 80 or so until I got the right paper to make a diffuser for the Photone app.

Day 11, no roots.

I told my wife... "I know EXACTLY how to get the roots to grow. Give up."

You know how you never find that thing you're looking for until you give up? That kind of thing happens so often if you really pay attention, and not just when you're looking for stuff.

So that's what I did.
I gave up... and planted some seeds.

Clones are gonna take off! You just wait.

20250815_125338.jpg

I planted one HUMONGOUS seed. Easily the biggest seed I've ever seen. Twice the size of any other in the pack. Like damn near pea sized!

Gonna watch that one...

Schrödinger's Roots

i think 2 much moisture and ppfd in this case but idfk

cloning in a cup of perlite has been best for me, alongside RW cubes or just a cup of water my most succesful %
I'd be willing to guess you're right about the moisture. I just cloned the same as I would if I was popping beans. They're a lot less saturated now.

Temps as well. Took a while but Stoney got me to bring it down a bit.

I'll keep trying to use the plugs just for ease of transfer into netcups/hydroton to put in the system.

I'm not gonna say they're done for... still hoping to see roots eventually. Planted those seeds to give the clones something to be jealous of so maybe they get their butts in gear.

Good luck Brother but I gotta ask...do you have any other seeds?
I know those chonker beans you speak of from GPS. Big bulbous things about 3x normal size with no tiger stripes and kinda odd shape more round than oblong?
Like if seeds looked like a person these would look like that deformed monster dude from The Goonies?

If it's those then yep, it would be wise to drop other seeds man. It's just a big bean of disappointment. Some do pop though but with a hi number of mutants and other weirdness.

There were 8 in the pack.

Haha yeah.. looked like a fat tick ready to pop 🤣

Nice to know 👍

These 4 beans are my contingency plan if the clones never root. I'll grow them out in the system for a month or so to take bigger/healthier cuttings. I'll choose the better looking plant and clone it as many times as I can... leave the others in the system for if those clones fail.

Question for you. Since I'll be taking more mature cuttings, should I top these plants or let 'em run? Which is the best route to be able to get the highest number of clones with the shortest time in Veg. I assume topping them will slow them down a bit, but I've never NOT topped, so I don't know which way to go if the plan is to farm the whole plant out for clones...

What I'm seeing from the big seeds in green foil packs I've passed on has been terrible really. No other way to put it. So when I ask about other seeds I was really asking about other seeds from another breeder. I just can't express how much of a waste of time those green foil packs and bulbous seeds are.
Don't mean to be all doom and gloom about them and wish I had something good to write but I don't. I think the last drop had over 40 of those seeds and only like 3 plants that were normal came up and those three had yields that were less than 1/4 other strains in the grow.

I plan on running my Vietnamese cut in clones. Right now I have 6 seeds started of regular stock. Past has shown a reliable 50/50 male/female ratio along with good stability so I expect at least 2 females, likely same pheno but could have some slight variation.

If I get those two or more females they will become mothers. More moms the better has always been my motto.
I'll start training and sculpting very early. It will go way beyond topping and into bonsai management.
Bonsai'ing will give me some age to the mother as I keep cutting her back. Her stalks will fatten and they'll load up on natural rooting hormones. The more I put into this stage the more and better clones I'll get later.
When I'm ready to take my clones I expect my mothers will be at least 2 months old but probably closer to 3.
The clones will come off lower branching shoots and should be loaded and ready to root naturally on their own. Sticking them in a glass of water would probably get them to root but I'm gonna go aero and use microbials to speed it all up and get an insane root ball growing to start.
A well trained and healthy bonsai mother can produce anywhere from 5 to 30+ clones every two weeks depending on size from micro mom to a decent sized gal with a 2'x2' topiary canopy.

After rooting they go straight to bloom. I don't veg clones at all since they grow so fast during preflower. It's not uncommon for a hybrid clone to start out at 6" and finish at 5' tall and wide. If they're indicas, maybe a little veg growth to get them some size but sativas and hybrids can go from cloner to bloom and it's actually ideal to do so.

Anyways, going back to topping etc.
So say you have a youngish plant and have topped her. The new shoots grow out and has forced side branching.
Those new shoots growing out will make shitty clones if you took them asap. Yes they can root but it will be slow and wonky, on the brink of death, and maybe with a little luck, some root in 2-3 weeks.
If you cut those new shoots back again, topping what's been topped, it forces more branching from the remaining nodes and builds up rooting hormones inside the mother. More branching means more clones. Older branching means more reliable and faster clones.
So you can see where this is headed to create your own success...more branching on older growth will produce more and reliable clones in a speedy, healthy manor.
The more you can dedicate to that, the better the cloning operation and results on the back end giving you clones running out of the cloner and into bloom instead of limping out and needing some veg time to recover.

Awesome.. thanks Bandit.
Lot's to digest there.

So this is likely what I have going on right now with the Kitchen Sink clones. I topped that plant once and then took every branch as a clone.

-------

What I'm gathering, as far as getting the best bang for my buck without keeping mothers, is that i should top these plants at around the 5th or 6th node and then top those tops again. Take the lower branches that have been around a bit longer as my clones. Roughly 1-2 month seed-to-clones process?

I get what you're saying about GPS.. unfortunately i don't have any of his beans that aren't in a green foil pack. Some are a bit more shiny...

I do have plenty of other seeds. 3 strains from B2 (not positive on the breeders), several strains from Redbeard, these Kitchen Sink from Cannarado and some regulars from DFG.

I used the GPS beans because they're the cheapest I have and part of me still expects these clones to root...

I can't wait to watch your bonsai/mothering process. I'm just not to mothers yet but I still wanna run clones. Maybe I'll just order some....

Who is a reliable shipper of clones? Got anyone in particular that you'd recommend?

Hang in there. I’ve had crappy looking lowers a few times. It’s all about the tops and patience. Just hang in there to day 21. 🤞

Ya, you don’t want them too wet. They need to seek the water after the initial watering. Water just in the channels below the puck tray. Looking forwards to when they take off. 👊

I haven't ever bought clones thru the mail Buddy. Been tempted a few times but balked over price and timing of availability. I understand most use something similar to a clone shipper container and speedy shipping so that's what I'd look for.

My very last pack of GPS was Joker Juice or something like that either in the name or the cross. It too had those fatty weirdo seeds.
That was the pack that went beyond hermie and gave me males and hermies but no females. Weird shit and I gave up after that. Did a shits and giggle drop of like 5 packs of different stuff, some with and without those chonker seeds and they were infested with mutants right off. Switched genetics and all that drama cleared up.

Damn.. my Dip-N-Stix was fire bud that I plan to try again sometime since i've gotten a tad better each round.

I have like 30+ packs from GPS.... boo

Hey!

We got a root on day 14!!

LET'S GOOOO
This is what I consider normal for me. With clones I’m probably more of a slacker than Steam. Maximum effort! Lol

If you don’t see roots by day 21 then somethings wrong imo.

Glad it’s working out. When things click from the start you’ll get the 7 day roots but for my environment it’s rare.

Great job bud. 👊

No new roots throughout the day, but this guy put in quite a bit of work.

I wasn’t going to say anything as we all have slightly different methods that work for us but that peat plug looks damper than I’d like. It might be why your roots are a little slow in showing. They aren’t having to go far to find it. 🤷‍♂️

Yessir. @Observer noted that a week ago or so. I've lowered the water level in the tray to where it doesn’t seem like there's any contact with the plugs, but they haven't really dried out. I wasn't gonna squeeze 'em...
