Greetings Fellow Bud Builders!

Considering something I swore off in the past and decided to let the BB community make this decision, might be fun.

So the question is- to Auto or not?
In the past I have said I would never run an auto strain, mainly because I need high THC levels and did not want to mess with the Ruderallis genes at all and I've also read where they can be super finicky. However, a mistake in my boss Toad's latest seed order has prompted me to reconsider this stance I have taken on autos. We're getting ready to run a bunch of strains from Anesia, Toad made his order, 4 different strains, and made a mistake on one and accidentally got the auto version of the Blackberry Moonrocks. I have those seeds in my possession and thinking of trying one out.

Pro and cons? The pros on this is that the flowers are finished in 70 days from germination! That's a huge difference from what I have been growing and If I could get a quick harvest, it would come in handy fosure. Anesia says the strain is capable of 25% THC, if I could hit that I would be pretty happy, 25% is a lot of THC. Also, less maintenance and training from what I have read. Don't want to mess with em too much topping and what not. That's good for me right now, the less work the better right now. The other pro I see is that Anesia has a great reputation for excellent breeding. If this were not Anesia here we're talking about, I would not be considering this.

I know the cons of autos are lower THC and a finicky plant but Anesia claims to have nailed the thc problem. I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who have ran autos in hydro? Wondering if that is or can be an issue? Any other cons from those who have experience with autos?

I will be watching this thread and invite folks to comment and then to vote their preference using the UP and DOWN arrows for any comments that members might offer up. Give it some time and then this thread decides whether I run these autos or not!

Fun Fun 🎉

Ahh man, that's a tough one for sure. In my experience with autos it's about 14 weeks seed to harvest +/- a week or so.
Imo autos are cool for places that have short seasons outside or don't have a long enough dark/light period.
On the other hand I've seen youtube videos of some beastly looking autos in a hydro set up so maybe that's something to consider as well.

I know I won't intentionally grow any autos inside ever again lol.
The ones I won from b2 are going outside this summer lol.

All the things people say about not topping autos and blah blah I find to be BS. I've topped, supercropped, and LSTd autos and as long as they're healthy they usually don't skip a beat.

Well I just grew two autos. “Deep Jealousy” from El Lopez. The first one was done in less then three months. It was strong herb. This second plant I just chopped yesterday. It took six months!!! That phenotype is no better than a photo of you have to wait that long for completion. That being said I’m running six wedding cake autos from Greenpoint seeds that are going into flower after one month. Here is a pic of the six month Deep Jealousy:

All i grow are autos and from my own experience seed to harvest about 14 weeks im using promix. Hydro maybe a different story. Could not be any easier seed into final pot water and feed when needed i just let them go no net and i get good yields.thumbnail_IMG_0696.jpg

With advancements in lighting and the ability to grow phototropic without vegging, going seed to weed in 65-80 days and doing it all on a 12/12 light cycle without rudy messing up the weed, IDK man.
IMO, autoflower breeder days are numbered the more this catches on😎

Autos serve a purpose, and are here to stay,

Pros. Run outside in climates where photos have a hard time finishing.
Indoors where light pollution can herm photos.
More compact plants where height is a concern, or discretion is required outdoors.
No concerns with timers or power outages.

Cons.
Less yield
Less potency
Mess these plants up in the early stages of growth and less chance of a turnaround.
Nutrient requirements are 50-80% of photos. (Not a con I guess)
Grower is not in control of size and desired yield as much
They have a place and have given me some great smoke, but 100days is typical despite what breeders say.

I don't know man, from what I've seen good growers can get a lot out of auto's. If they can keep giving 18hrs of light and they still flower, that's a lot of energy going to buds that 12 hrs doesn't give them. I'm not a fan of them because most I've grown flowering on 12/12 were feeble little things but look at @OLDCRO 's stuff . He can grow them

Quality of light matters more than anything, especially in regards to on time when growing weed.

Bottom line is all lights are not created equal and some can grow much better pot and do it faster with less on time than other lights.

If a breeder is recommending 20/4 I'd ask 20/4 of what? CFL? Because 20/4 under my lights would beat a plant into submission with light stress

The breeder recommends 20/4 light schedule from seed for whatever that is worth.
20...even better.....( edit: okay i read below...longer hrs bad, shorter hrs good....forget my previous statement..) woulda sucked on my old 1000w hps....shit who am i kidding I have 900w led in my 5x5 but there goes the electric bill...

Thanks for everyone who chimed in on this. I've decided NOT to run the autos, at least at this time. The only reason I was even considering is because of the breeder and their great reputation. Going to run a CBG dominant strain instead called White CBG Seedless and said to be among the best CBG strains in the world capable of 18% of this anti cancer cannabinoid, a heavy yielder too.

I might be able to talk @MrsSweetLeaf into putting one of these Blackberry Moonrocks Auto's in her greenhouse this summer ;) She has gotten pretty good at hydro, that's a fact Jack.

When I started growing it was DWC with autos, It seems in my experience autos will veg longer in soilless medium. I’ve ran 7 different breeders for autos and I still seem to manage a 40-45 days before flowering The soonest I’ve pulled an auto in DWC was 98 days and as long as 120. This was just my experience.

That sounds lucky to me, I've had auto's flip in 3 - 4 weeks, 5 at the latest and they are just not big enough for me to take a chance on any longer...I tend to veg 7-8 weeks with photo's although in my autopots 6 weeks might work better. I never got enough mass off auto's to make it work for me.

See my grow journal, I grow auto's, depends on the breeder in my experience. Rick Mosca and Daz, both colab with darkhorse genetics, and others earlier to develop the auto type lines. Just see my thread, I can grow em into the lights, harvest is 4 oz. to 8 oz. max. Come on Max.

I was done with autos for a while and then changed up this season. For the most part, the auto's will never replace reg weed with me. But! I think I found one sweet spot for them. That spot is a late May to June start for me. They will grow in a pot on the deck at that time. Of course some grow better than others..........I grew Orangedelic, Afghan, Hubbabubbsmelloscope out side this year and the first two were quite runty but Hubba was different...........Good size and the smoke was not bad to be honest. I think that time frame could be a sweetspot. Now I just need to find the right one to grow in that time frame. I recently traded for a few packs on overgrow and next year I will try it again.
Also, in light of the 6 mature 6 immature plant req. in NY. These auto's are like a free throw coming in just before your larger plants flower.
Just gotta find a really good one. Next season, I have Double Grapes, Hubbabubba, Zamaldica, and a bruce banner cross to check out.

My first auto's in 2019 were from Fastbuds........man, wish I could have that $$ back...they were absolute crapola for germination.

I wouldn't ever grow auto's inside but I'd sell them if i sold seeds, its not up to vendors to choose seeds for anyone and if you don't supply them someone else will, you don't need to like them but why not give the market what it wants...it clearly wants auto!!

I wish there wasn't such a thing and 100% of breeding efforts went to photoperiod but that's another story...Good luck!!
