Jeff I hear you. When I was 15 I worked for Midget and Sprint Car Chassis building shop. There were guys back then running Midgets out of their garage and they were competitive. That was about 41 years ago. I was watching a documentary on the Chili Bowl and they mentioned the cost of a Toyota for the midgets today are 60k just for the motor. Part of what is crazy to me is most of these national racing associates (Nascar, NHRA, USAC) are trying to put rules in place to limit the cost of stuff but it seems to not really do anything.
I thought the sprints and midgets had to run Pinto blocks?

They work great. They make it feel a bit more responsive and it turns in a lot quicker, which makes it a little squirrely at first but now that im used to it i find it a lot more sporty. Probably how someone who races would set it up honestly.

awesome, i'm glad they're working out for you. the tire profiling can be a game changer for any bike. you just happen to have picked a first bike with an insanely limited selection of rubber, so you get what you get haha

That's what I get for buying a 36 year old obsolete bike with obsolete parts for a bike. Love the damn thing though. Im doing the skills test this Thursday to get most restrictions taken off my license.

I worked at a chassis shop in like 1981 or so and at that time you could run many different configurations. The chassis was very ahead of its time as it used coil over shocks. Back then everything was torsion bar. The coil over was a large weight savings.
Back to the engines, back then VW's ruled the midget class. Auto Craft was the main supplier. They later came out with their own block. Another engine used back then was called a chevy 2. They would literally half of a V8 off. Today I believe everything is Toyota or Honda.

Bought a 1964 vw station wagon from neighbor for $60 , was 6 volt. Blew that one up and replaced motors 4 times. Newer pancake motors from 64 up were 12 volts. Starter had different size shaft so they would give my wife a push at snells grocery to get it going

I am very familiar with VW's. I was a class record holder back in the day. We had parts that we had to order months in advance to get them. Last motor I built was TI Rods and TI Valves, had like 16 to 1 compression and made 250HP on the dino. I prototyped a tranny that is still used today. It got kind of boring at the end. We ran MSD crank Fired ignitions and ran soft touch rev limited. You would drag the car into the lights with a line lock and push the throttle to the floor. The soft touch would bring the engine up to the desired RPM and if it went over the rev limiter would not fire a cylinder. It sounds like the thing is throwing a rod or something but it was just the rev limiter.

The first drag motor I had used porsche rod bearings. That was a huge mistake, great for the crank manufacturer because the crank was strong as hell. Bad for the engine builder because it ate rod bearings. I would change rod bearings sometimes on Saturday night if I running the car on Sunday. I think I could pull the engine, change the bearings and have it back in the car in like 3 hours.

Many of my friends are still associated with VW's.
 
2 stroke smoke ! Lol back in the day they made a 465 cc 2 stroke talk about death trap - only thing worse is I once owned a Suzuki water buffalo

I remember my brother took a ride on his buddies new 500 yamaha street bike and he almost killed himself on the thing. Man the look on his face when he came back home from almost running into a house, but hit a plant and saved his life.
 
I know 😅 I have an 85 Toyota pickup I'm restoring and want to put a Weber on it but I'm not trying to spend $500+ on a carburetor.
You might want to do some looking around. Back in the 1990's we used Weber 48 IDA and we bored them out to 51MM. Anyways there are US small manufacturers making basically 58 IDA's. Thinking there might be some alternatives.

One of my HS buddies had a Type 3/Squareback. Don't remember the year but I do remember he had a hell of a time keeping the Bosch FI running.

I had a notchback for a second until someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse at one of the old Bug-Ins.

I'd love to take on a lowlight Ghia project if I ever finish my Nova project. Maybe stick a Subi Boxer or 914 motor in it.

I might have you covered. I just ran into some old timer that has a shit ton of dub parts in his Quonset hut. Lemme see if he has any carbs laying around. He had 2 Bugs, one with an 1835cc motor running on a single carb and an old double cab Transporter. If I'm not mistaken, the carb was a Weber carb. If it is do you have the manifold for it?

He wants to get rid of all his VW parts as he's moving down to the coast to be closer to his grandkids.

i'll have to confirm. right now the 22r has whatever came stock. to be honest the main reason i want to switch to a weber is the sound weber's make. i'm a sucker for intake sounds :ROFLMAO:

funny you say that... my plan for the pickup is to swap in a Beams 3S-GE running ITBs with a six speed behind it.

I owned an 82 datsun 280zx with the L28E in it for about six years, and wanted to do the same thing with it (ITBs, not swap to a four banger). Furthest I got was putting a hot air intake on it, but that lit up the passion for that sound... now with a turbo car, hearing that turbine wind up tickles me like a kid in a candy shop at damn near 40 years old lol but we're speaking NA here, forced induction is a whole other monster (and there's nothing that beats the whine of a twin-screw supercharger).

You know exactly what I'm talking about haha. I'm leaning red top as I can get one out of Seattle with the trans + ecu for about $3k. will be awesome to cruise up there in the truck, drop its new heart in the bed, drive home, and can probably get the swap done in a weekend.

first things first, i gotta get the truck to stop again haha master cylinder lost its rear main seal, so have a new one that needs bench bled and installed. once she can stop, i can throw the battery back in her and she'll do the things vehicles are supposed to.

Did they use 3S-GE's here in the US? I know they used them in Japan on the Celicas and MR2's. Not sure if they smogged them for the US market.

Think it was a 71 or 72 750 triple 2 stroke ! Scary quick only made em like 2 years

Not a car or a bike, but im gonna share it anyways.
This is back when i was working at Camp Pinnacle in Voorheesville NY. My oldest son and i were out grooming snowmobile trails. It was an absolute blast!
