Grump's Gassy Cream Cake Grow 🌱

yahtzee!!!! at least this way you're giving her a chance!! nice to see just how moist it was too... don't know why it's happening but what you're doing looks to be spot on. the cubes, the water, the temps, all seem right down the middle.
One thing I've realized I missed was some Orca. I used to start them with a splash of Orca and RapidBoost. I added a small dose to the watering tonight.

i don't add anything, i take hot tap water from my faucet and set them on a heat mat. no food, no ph, nuthin!

Yes ma'am
Okay, I assume you planted all five seeds. This is what I see. One went gang busters and did well with no light.
Two of them were planted upside down.
The curly head as you call it, I think it got caught neath the plug and was held in a pretty damp environment. It’s leaves look rotted.
I see one more about to pop its first leaves.
That’s five for five that has germinated.
I would be curious to see your side by side seeds, how are they doing?
I have grown Redbeards seeds for seven years, maybe eight and in that time period have had trouble with one strain that did not germinate. He immediately made that good.
It just seems kind of unfair to dis his passion and make it seem he is some young pollen chunker that does not have a clue. If that were indeed the case I would have never vetted him.
Many on this forum are currently growing his stock with no problems, myself included.
He is very disinterested in having affiliates and I was in talks with him for over five days just to get him to sponsor our monthly photo contest.
I told you right off, that he recommended pre soaking his seeds. You skipped that. I told you to plant sideways if you were not for sure which end was the butt. You skipped that and have two germing upside down.
I’m not dissing you, I’m just laying all the info out.
As someone that is not aware reading your post makes his seeds seem pretty lousy. I just can’t keep my mouth shut when I myself know first hand better than that.
Your medium is completely saturated and should actually be moist. This causes oxygen deprivation and sometimes rot.
I want you to be successful, but at the same time feel I must defend a person that has years in this business and is not here to defend himself.
I’m always open to help you, but I won’t hold back. I think you expect that of me?

I popped these at 10:30 on Monday the 18th. Four different strains of Redbeards. One from B2ACG and two from seed fair. Two on the left are from Seed Fair, as you can see one popped four days behind the other and is smaller. The next four are Redbeards and the last on the right I got from ba2cg IMG_2686.jpeg

Those 2 were from the new batch of 10 that I planted 2 days ago.

That one grew upside down, I believe. When I pulled the plugs to look in on them, day 4 maybe, it was all white and growing upwards and then into the side of the hole. Took another day or 2 to right itself.

I see one more about to pop its first leaves.

I actually planted 9 Gassy Cream Cake. I had a pack and a set of 4 freebies. So as of right now... 3 out of 9 have broke the surface on day 7.

I never called him a pollen chucker or even dissed his craft. I asked about seed maturity and bandit immediately set that straight. I have yet to see a striped seed from RB so that had me curious. I've said nothing about him personally and I've made no statements that weren't strictly objective. Merely stated what I was doing and seeing.

The thing about the plugs is I lose visual on the seed almost immediately. I have no way of knowing whether or not it twists in the tweezers on the way in. Sideways, butt, whatever... it's a shot in the dark for me.

What's important, to me at least, is that I've changed NOTHING from ALL of my previous rounds of seeds. This first batch of his, I took full blame. Salted tap water. That killed pretty much 2 packs. Lemony Shiznits failed and I wanted to assume it was the change in plugs. Stoney confirmed those plugs sucked, so I got the old tried and true for the Gassy Cream Cake. I planted 9 and 5 days later only had one sprout. I'm not complaining about 5 days, but I started a new batch of some of my oldest seeds because I had 10 to throw at it and they only cost 2 bucks apiece. I'm just trying to narrow down where my issues are. If it turns out that all these pop, no problem, then everything points at the RB packs. If that's the case, I can still take full blame for not presoaking.

I know you did not call him that. That was my terminology.
I’m not judging you or dissing you, I was giving you an honest opinion. I’m not looking to lay blame.
Makes sense now why you have been through so many. Also explains why they were upside down. I have used those same plugs but only for cloning.
I asked if you wanted my opinion, and I thank you for taking it so well.

This is why IMO the vertical germinator is the best thing since sliced bread.
The worst I have had was 3 out of 20 not popping and that may have been in soil.
I have on almost every germ in soil had 1 that failed and I could never even find it in the soil to know what happened.
That is not an issue at all with the VG nor is seeds righting themselves or light getting to them.
I am shocked they are not much more known about and capitalized on.

I believe user error gave our guy Grump here a bad first impression of the VG but would love to see him give it another try.
So much of this is solved by it and that live look in on what's happening really taught me a ton, pretty much demystifying germination for me.
I also believe starting seeds in the dark is unwise. You want light pulling them to the top and gravity pulling from the bottom.
Every complete propagation kit on the market like Jumpstart comes with a seed starter light similar to this rig. These have been around since the 90s with next to no changes because the kit works so well and weed just loves it some light even at germination

Oh yeah. My dome has lights and a timer for them with a heatpad underneath. I just had it unplugged when I planted because we had ADT showing up the next day. I wasn't sure if they would need in my basement. They didn't, but I forgot to kick the light back on. I thought I remembered in time but that one sprouted earlier than usual. I rarely see sprouts before 3 days. Little guy probably spent ~8 hours in the dark.

The VG is great, but every time I've used it (twice now) the taproot just runs wild. It took what seemed like forever to get the side shoots coming out of the netpot. Using the plugs has those side shoots happening almost immediately. However, 100% percent germ rate with it.

I'm not opposed to the VG but, up until recently, the plugs just worked better for me and my hydro. Look at Stoney. His plants have taken a long time to get the side shoot business going on. Healthy plants otherwise, but growth really explodes with those extra roots.

I have the VG just sitting there, itching to get in the game, but now I'm on a mission to figure out why my ol' tried and true has been failing. Something's up and I've been hoping to get to the bottom of it.

Happy Thanksgiving folks. I hope everyone enjoys this day with family.

I plant all mine upside down 😂..apart from not being able to see the shoot I’ll lay them on there side.fair dinkum though I’ve planted upside down bout 6-7mm down with the seed on roughly a 60 deg angle and have done so since birth..late 80s..does it work well I wouldn’t b doing it if it didn’t 😁.most times the seeds know which way is down..gravity tells them.sometimes they go stupid or something prevents then from doing so..I don’t even put mine under a light till they come up..just in a nice warm dark space..this is in either in the ground or coco/perlite..

Like this lol.as the shoot goes downward and seed moves towards breaking the surface it helps pull the helmet off but not %100 of the time.old timers taught me this and havnt changed since..does anyone do palm readings .how long do I have 😀A6834D0C-5229-4992-9682-B7CC90726312.jpeg

I thought all of us had the "M" on our hands. Now my family is going to think I'm weird demanding they show me the palm of their hands all day 🤪. Just checked the hippy daughter. She is also double "M"ed. She read what it says at the link Granny shared. She found it really interesting, but did joke that, "It would have saved a lot of typing if they just wrote that you were kissed by a wizard at birth", lol. She ran off to find her palm reading book. I'll report back, if it she finds it. Curious if it says the same thing as the Your Tango write-up.

These were not trusted sources, but when I was in grade school, the 10 year old class mystics said this had something to do with marriage. I can't remember what exactly, tho. They also folded fortune telling devices out of paper. I wish I could go back and see that stuff. I remember they had some little chant they'd recite while they opened and closed these paper divining devices. Whatever it was open too at the end contained a prediction. Probably who-liked-who or something like that.

Actually there are many articles on this subject. It actually started with the Native Americans. All of the medicine men had these marks. I always found it amusing. Some of them even link us genetically. Weird huh? An awful lot of info out there.

That book my daughter brought in was too complex for me. Breaks down individual lines, mounts and a bunch of other stuff. It breaks each of those lines in the "M" individually. Plus, each line has multiple meanings depending on where it starts and stops, how defined it is, if it's broken, etc.

Yea I'd like to have one.

Ez germination, I like to see it.

Not, it getting its tail wrapped around its head for whatever reason.

Otherwise, I soak in water and wait till a tap root is poking out from seed then put In media usually.

And always put the seeds in sideways or the pointy side down.

I wonder what the lines on my palms say about me? 😋

@GrumpAzz
Do you have one of the first VG designs we came up with?
Crossing over was an issue with early models and I've since tweeked the design to have way deeper channels to keep taps in the lane.
Main thing is only two layers of paper on the corrugated part to keep them sitting deep in the channel then 2-4 layers to cover them.
If you like, I can send you and updated version. I think we're on around the 6th generation of the VG always trying to improve it.
This simplified model with deep channels is probably my favorite so far. Works great and eliminates my fumbling issue I was having with the two sided design
