You have the right idea. If its a decent attic to get around generally Id get as much up there for main floor drops as possible. Way easier dropping them down than fishing up imo, and you can easily see where the interior walls are from the attic when you pull back insulation. @GrumpAzz is a sparky so I'm sure hes fished a wire or two as well.

If it's an option, I'll (carefully) pull trim and channel behind it to get wires around a room before Ill cut a bunch of holes in drywall. I find it quicker to pull nails and reapply trim, touch up nail holes, than patching drywall/paint/mess etc ymmv.
Fished a wired or two, for sure. You guys are on the right track. Like Beans said, for the first floor, the attic is a pretty easy place to see where your walls are and you'd use less wire if that's where your rack is. That was the only thing that's raised an eyebrow for me. Server rack in the attic? Do attics not get ridiculously hot in your area?

Edit: crap like that is what has me wanting that powerplant job. It's no fun squirming around in an attic.

Grump I think he said from server up to the attic not server up in the attic. I gathered basement server w drops on main and basement levels, all retro. Without being on site it's kind of hard to give much advice but if you get in a jam @tobh I'm all ears.

oh hell nah lol the server rack lives in the utility room, which is in the garage area of the basement.

what i need to run for the basement:

  • one drop for a wireless access point inside the hallway, about 10' from the utility room
  • two drops to my office which is in the NW corner of the house

what i need to run for the main floor:

  • one drop in the entryway of the house for a wireless access point
  • two drops at each corner of the house for PoE cameras
  • two drops in the living room

I would also like to future-proof somehow to make running future drops easier. Really I would like to run multiple lengths of conduit in the walls so that repeating all this mathing won't be required when I inevitably want to run more lines for additional cameras and smart home devices. This first effort is just to get the core system established.

This is the rough dimensions and plan for execution

edit: not to scale at all.

so, aside from cutting holes in walls to see, or trusting a stud finder to tell me there's something behind a wall, are there any devices to figure out where the electrical lines physically run in the walls?

reason I ask is because... well, i'll snag some pics for y'all.

maybe should start a sparky thread for this kinda stuff. up in here hijacking the gaming thread :ROFLMAO:

@Moe.Red or @smoke or other staff -- would y'all mind moving posts #76 through #85 to a new thread for Electrical discussion? Hijacked this thread with marginally relevant content that would better live in a help thread for electrical work (wiring, circuits, etc).

I can start the thread if it'd be helpful but figure y'all might have some fancy way of doing that.

Mods, here's the thread to migrate those posts to please 😁 https://budbuilders.org/threads/⚡electrical-help-thread⚡.506/

Rainbow 6 Siege has been my go to for a few years since I built my pc in 2019. It’s frustrating and addictive. Haven’t played as much in the last little while, but still hop on a couple times a week. Went with AMD for the pc. 3700x, 5700xt reference card. It was fun to piece it all together and build. Kinda wanna do it again soon, but so many other things to spend money on. Like new grow shit lol.

Powers to be are working on it

I'm halfway through my first grow and I'm already looking at other lights. Why? So I can put together another tent, of course.

What are you thinking for your next setup? Same size tent?
Thinking maybe a smaller veg tent to run perpetually. My SE5000 might not fit in a 3x3 so maybe a 4x4. Shoot maybe even a 2x4 and get a cheaper light for veg.

I see you praising your new light and really like the idea of being able to control the spectrum.

I’ve been thinking about a 2x4 as well. I currently only have a 2x2 in the closet and 4x4 in garage which isn’t air conditioned. So trying to make space for a 2x4x5 in the closet to get a little more space to run year round.

Considering this light

Anyone have any input on the new AC Infinity lights? They have a 2x4 option and some other QB and bar style lights out now.

That's got really even coverage, according to their chart.

Yeah that’s what caught my eye. Someone from another weed community turned me on the the brand. The price and even par map seemed like a no brainer. Growing in a smaller space makes good lighting around the edges really important imo.

I just looked up CLW too. Little pricier, but seems like they make a quality product. So many options out there.

And this is why I haven’t built a new PC yet! Or done anything with any other hobbies in a long while Lol!

Great light. Might have to put it on my list when I'm deciding on lighting upgrades. 2 in my 5 x 5 would be ideal.

PC is good kit. Forza 5 4k60fps "extreme" graphics setting on OLED (w my kid learning how to drive w a busted hand lol)

Nice rig @Cool_Beans , can't wait to get one together next year. This low-to-middle grade gaming laptop my wife got me has done its duty getting me through school with room for a little fun on the side. Cared more about ram than anything else so i can get fast compiles when writing software.

Anyone on here actively playing TOTK?
I see these elaborate videos online of contraptions people build to defeat enemies. Am i the odd one out for not making such things and just going in with a sword and shield in hand and saying 'come at me brah'

I just got the master sword and finishing up side quests before i go to the castle

personal system is back online. specs in the pic 💪View attachment 19297
GPU? just says something generic AMD ATI

cooling? could probably safely overlock a little if not already, if you wanted, that cpu already looks beefy though

i looked into ryzen systems years ago, just never put the money together to finally buy parts and build one after my old system shit out.

man this had to of been like 7 years ago if not longer, when ryzen was just coming out

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT

Edit: the drivers on Debian don't act quite right so a bunch of shit is fucky

I hate installing drivers. Especially HP drivers for their printers.
oh man... don't get me started with HP, or any consumer grade printer anymore really. HP happens to be particularly egregious with their data collection and manipulation of consumers though.

What gets me is I'm STILL gullible enough to believe it'll actually fix the issue! 🙄 😄

there's a joke in programming that aligns with this. a programmer has a problem, so they decide to use regular expressions to solve it. now they have two problems. that's basically what buying HP gear does for the consumer.

I hope HP pays out big on their latest class action lawsuit against them. They are crooks.

They got a suit against them on their all in one printers. If you run out of ink you are locked out from scanning and faxing, total bs. If you run out of yellow ink you can't print straight black documents(text) either.

HP commented that users should buy a scanner if they need to scan... All in ones are around $50 but their cheapest stand alone scanner is over 200. They play the game of getting their money back through over priced ink.... So they lock you out only for financial gain..

Edit- btw it is has been discovered that the average home user only uses 20% of an HP ink cartridge while 80% is lost in maintenance cycles. I'm very partial to believing the maintenance cycle wastes more ink than needed, also for financial gain.

It's a godamn racket
Sorry I hate them....

yeah, i heard about that, and am a victim of that yellow ink bullshit. not to mention, you can't set up their all-in-ones without installing an app on your phone, then connecting the printer to your wifi network where it immediately builds a topology of your network and phones home with that data. you can't direct connect to a computer anymore, either, because they don't put cable ports (ethernet, printer, usb, serial, whathaveyou) on their devices anymore so you basically have no choice BUT to put this spyware piece of shit equipment on your network just to be able to use it.

and it's a damn shame. i used to love HPs offerings -- their laptops were some of the best I've owned and lasted for years. but, like Walmart, Chick-fil-a, and Samsung, I'll never give them another dime. companies like them should be ran out of the free market with zero mercy.

I have a feeling someone in Big Pharma applied their business model to Tech seeing as how effective it was for them. Cure? HA!,,,,,but take this. It'll alleviate some of the pain.....credit or debit?

Who the fuck takes away all physical ports... stupid mofos. same idiots that don't think the owner has the right to work on their own equipment(john d.)

I still keep my old HP laptop around... Just for the firewire port when needed. It came in handy when doing converting some old DV8(i think they are called) tapes for someone, was able to get a direct digital copy of the tape via the camcorder instead of using an analog video capture device. (DV media, this was an actual digital recording via tape media)

yes that old HP laptop is def rugged and still workin whenever i might need it. While this Dell laptop cracked its top shell in the first year, when i opened it with my hand not directly in the middle...

The best laptop I've owned was an IBM Thinkpad. I think I still have it in storage somewhere.

funny you mention that, was just talking to the IT person at work about giving a select few Linux or FreeBSD boxes. Thinkpads are the first laptop that comes to mind when thinking about full hardware support for *nix variants.

That thing was practically bullet proof. When I got mine I also appreciated what I wasn't given. Bloatware. Almost zero add ins other than some useless IBM tool suite and the proverbial McAfee AV crap.

Funny you should mention the 'nix thing. I was recommended that computer by a friend of mine that specializes in all things Linux as far as databases and another IT network specialist friend that was specialized in Cisco Enterprise Networking.

haha i'm pretty sure any Cisco shop used to give out the Thinkpads as a consolation prize when they hired people on :ROFLMAO: those thinkpads were everywhere for years man...

I use to go to a lot of those industry conventions in Vegas like COMDEX in the late 90's - early 2000's and CES currently. DEFCON a couple times. I noticed most of the Tpad owners were on the ground tech guys.

yeah, ibm and then lenovo really made some indestructible pieces of gear. a lot of the hackers i know still use them, too, simply because they tolerate being tossed around in luggage really well and are stupid simple to wipe clean between engagements.
